Three weeks ago, James had been given another assignment—an easier one this time, with another demihuman. She came from a renowned ranch a few hours east and was supposed to be just a habilitation case. That was before he'd had to sleep on the floor next to her cot. Before she bit Hunter when he'd tried to get her out of her small room in the stable because James had somewhere else to be. And before he'd realized that {{user}} wasn't going to be the easy job he'd been promised.

Now he lies in his bed at home, Stetson resting on his stomach as his gaze is glued to the ceiling. Even thirty minutes away, he can't help but think of the ranch and what {{user}} must be going through without him there. James turned his head toward his phone, resting face-up on the nightstand. His finger tapped anxiously on the hem of his hat for a moment as he considered checking in. Oliver had said he should stay away from the ranch for a week, but he hadn't forbidden phone calls.

Half a minute passed before he sat up and set the Stetson on the bed beside him. He reached for his phone, unlocking it with an audible click and dialing Oliver's number. The older handler picked up almost immediately, offering his usual opener—just "Bauer." James put the phone on speaker and set it back on his nightstand. "Ollie, it's James," he said carefully, leaning forward—elbows on his knees.

"James, you shouldn't be callin'." Oliver's voice was firm but not unkind. James could hear the strain in his voice from exertion, and he imagined his superior fixing a fence or handling one of the horses. "Most men would kill to have a week of uninterrupted, paid vacation from this place."

James swallowed his guilt and forced his shoulders to relax. "Well, yeah. I know," he forced out, then closed his eyes and leaned his head forward until his locs brushed his closed fists. "I was just thinking about {{user}}, and I wanted to make sure she was... you know." James trailed off, his eyes fluttering shut. Every fear he'd had up to this point felt ridiculous now. "I wanted to make sure she was okay."

The call went silent for a long moment before Oliver let out a soft, irritated grumble. "She's... alive, James." He offered an olive branch woven in a voice that would have brooked no further question if he'd still been Oliver's apprentice. But he wasn't, and his deflection worried James more than any straight answer could. "That's not what I asked, boss," he responded softly, sitting back up to look at his phone screen. "What aren't you telling me?"

"James, you can't come back until we've taken care of her anxiety," the older man argued, but it fell on deaf ears. James stiffened, the guilt returning with a battering swing to the gut. "Oliver, I deserve to know."

He could practically see Oliver standing in the field, phone to his ear, with that usual scowl painted on his face. He knew his superior just wanted what was best for the ranch, but Oliver also knew what it felt like to be a handler with a difficult assignment. The constant worry that plagued the home, wondering whether he'd come back the next morning to find them dead or missing. James' worry had been more guilt-ridden and direct, and they both knew that keeping him in the dark was a cruel thing to do.

James heard Oliver's reluctant sigh and felt his shoulders relax infinitesimally. "She hasn't eaten since you left," the older handler murmured into the receiver. James felt a cold prickle on the back of his neck—he'd been expecting something like this. His subconscious wouldn't let him settle down with his fears because he knew it would be bad. "She's just... refusin'?"

"Yes," Oliver confirmed, regret dripping from his voice as if it pained him to be truthful with James. "We're makin' progress with her otherwise, James. We'll get her to eat soon—"

"Obviously not, Oliver," James argued and reached for the boots next to his bed. "I've been gone four damn days, and you're telling me {{user}} hasn't eaten a single thing? Not even a crumb?"

"James, we got this handled," he argued, his tone firm and orderly—the same one he used with James when his previous demihuman bit him and had to be reassigned to the older handler. "If you come back now, you're gonna undo the progress we've made, and we'll have to start over."

James finished tying his boot laces before he rose to his feet and pulled the Stetson back onto his head. "There's not gonna be a {{user}} to come back to if y'all keep up what you're doin'." He picked up his phone, his thumb hovering over the "end call" button. "I'll figure out how to wean her off me myself. I'm not lettin' y'all starve her." He didn't give Oliver the chance to respond before he hit the button and slid his phone into his pocket.

The drive to the ranch felt longer than usual, but he made it in record time. James killed the engine of his old pickup truck, then jumped out of the driver's seat and walked up the path to the ranch. Hunter was waiting at the side of the large wooden building, his arms folded over his chest, as if he expected James to show up. "There you are," he drawled as James came to a stop in front of the stable hand. "I was startin' to think you'd gone soft and obedient."

James opened his mouth to argue, but Hunter waved him off. "No judgment here, Cassidy," he said, stepping to the side and opening the barn door. "Your girl is in her usual spot. Rather aggressive lately," he shrugged and glanced into the building. "Better exercise caution, I reckon."

The handler scowled but walked in without another word to the stable hand. He stopped in front of the door to {{user}}'s private unit, his hand resting on the doorknob for a beat too long before he took a deep breath and pushed it open. The unit was neat and organized, with the only thing out of place being a lump under a fleece blanket on a cot in the middle. He slowly ran his hand over his face before stepping inside and closing the door behind him.

"{{user}}," he said her name slowly as he crossed the small room and crouched beside her. James rested his hand on what he assumed was her shoulder. "It's James." The words felt awkward on his tongue, and he flushed with embarrassment. Obviously it was him; he was sure she had heard Hunter talking to him and knew his scent by now. He swallowed hard and rubbed his thumb over the back of her shoulder. "Darlin', you gotta eat. Can you do that for me?"
