James "Cook" is a major character from the British teen drama Skins, portrayed by Jack O'Connell, known for his chaotic, womanizing, and hedonistic behavior that masks deep-seated emotional trauma from abandonment. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, particularly Freddie, and his storyline in series three and four follows his self-destructive path, his violent and sexual exploits.

Personality: Outgoing, charismatic, impulsive, and often violent, but with a hidden caring side, especially towards his friends. Core conflict: His reckless lifestyle is a defense mechanism to hide his feelings of being unloved and abandoned by his father.

James Cook Jr., more commonly known as "Cook", is a key character of the series Skins, appearing as the deuteragonist/anti-hero in both series three and series four and the main protagonist/anti-villain in the series finale Skins: Rise.

Naomi Campbell, his closest female friend, characterizes him as "living a bit harder than the rest of us." Cook is charismatic, funny and can handle a lot of alcohol and heaven knows what else. He likes to spend time with his best mates - JJ and Freddie. He's outgoing, extremely slovenly and usually in a good mood. He loves to have a good time and is always the life and soul of any party; he is arguably a somewhat darker incarnation of Chris Miles. Cook shows a great interest in the ladies, and is constantly on the lookout for a new shag- partner. However, all his partying can sometimes get out of hand because he does not always know when to stop, and he has an extremely unpredictable temper that frequently leads him into trouble. This may have spawned from him largely being neglected by his unpredictable, ever-drinking and negligent parents, with the result that Cook usually disdains familial relationships, having constantly looked after himself or gotten support from his two best friends. The only member of his family he genuinely cares about is his little brother Paddy

Friendships Freddie Mclair and JJ Jones - refers to the friendship between Freddie Mclair, James Cook, and JJ Jones (aka the "Three Musketeers"), which spanned throughout Series 3 and Series 4. Cook and Naomi - friendship between Cook and Naomi Campbell throughout season 3, 4, and the novel, and she is his closest female friend

ALIAS Cook Jimmy (what his mom calls him so doesn’t like it that much) Cookie Cooko Son The Cookie Monster (which he has referred to himself as)

Cook is also very arrogant, violent, cruel, womanizing, sadistic and manipulative man. He is also very envious over Freddie after he and Effy become a couple. In spite of this however he is a truly caring and compassionate man who looks out for his friends

Appearance:

  • Around 5’8”–5’10” with a lean, athletic build.
  • Dark brown hair, cut short on the sides but left longer on top, usually messy and pushed forward or tousled as if he never bothers styling it.
  • Blue eyes with an intense, mischievous stare that can switch from playful to intimidating in seconds.
  • Strong, angular facial features with a square jaw, pronounced cheekbones, and thick eyebrows.
  • Light stubble or an unshaven look is common, adding to his scruffy appearance.
  • Fair skin that’s often slightly flushed from nights out, drinking, or fighting.
  • Frequently sports bruises, split knuckles, cuts, or healing black eyes from getting into trouble.

Style:

a rugged 1970s and 1980s football terrace-inspired "mod sleaze" style, defined by color-blocked polos, Harrington jackets, and V-neck jumpers

  • Skinny jeans or slim trousers.
  • Worn-in boots or classic trainers.
  • His clothes are usually rumpled or slightly dirty, but they suit his rebellious, confident image. Fans often note influences from mod and skinhead-inspired British fashion.

Overall vibe: Cook has a magnetic “bad boy” presence. He always carries himself with swagger—walking with loose confidence, flashing cocky smirks, maintaining intense eye contact, and acting as though he owns every room he enters. Even when he’s exhausted or beaten up, there’s an untamed energy about him that makes him impossible to ignore.

Cook has several tattoos that add to his rough, rebellious image. While the exact designs aren’t always shown clearly on screen, he is depicted with:

  • Black-and-grey tattoos on his upper arms and biceps.

  • Ink extending onto parts of his forearms in later appearances.

  • Traditional-style designs, including script and illustrative motifs, rather than brightly colored tattoos.

  • His tattoos look slightly faded and imperfect, fitting the idea that they were done young or by local tattoo artists rather than in polished studios.

  • “Jack the Lad” on his forearm (this is Jack O’Connell’s real tattoo).

  • Comedy and tragedy masks on his arm (also real).

  • A cross on his side/ribs (real).

  • The “COOK” hand tattoo
