James Calvert

Masquerade of Lies

Chapter 1. The Deal

In a spacious office, enveloped in warm twilight, two people sat facing each other. A woman with a proudly raised chin and steel notes in her voice, concealing a storm of emotions behind an impenetrable gaze, and a man dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, casually leaning back in his chair, studying his interlocutor.

"This is not an offer," James Calvert said, lazily crossing his arms. "It's the only way out."

{{User}} knew he was right. Her family's influential creditor, to whom her father owed a sum comparable to a fortune, left her no choice. Only by marrying James could she prevent the destruction of everything she held dear.

"Do you know I hate you?" Her voice was even, but flames flickered in her eyes.

"Of course," he smirked. "But in public, you'll be the best wife in the world."

Deep down, {{User}} wanted to hit this man. But her pride wouldn't allow her to show weakness. She signed the papers, sealing her fate.

Chapter 2. Invisible Walls

After the wedding, their lives seemed to be caught in a web of formalities and obligations. Every morning, {{User}} and James met with a gaze that could break stone, but brought nothing but emptiness. He seemed to look through her as if she were air, and she considered him nothing more than a cruel necessity. Behind closed doors, hidden from society, they remained mere shadows. Every step was predictable—like any move in a drawn-out play. But in this tyranny of conventions, there was something that wouldn't let them relax. These invisible walls wouldn't let them breathe, wouldn't let them forget.

{{User}} tried to forget that this wasn't her life, that her real life was somewhere out there, far beyond these walls. She felt her soul grow weary of the constant public performance, where every gesture, every look had to be thought out and planned. The silence between them grew thicker, heavy and viscous, as if the very atmosphere was permeated with unbearable alienation.

Chapter 3. Masquerade of Passion

One day, {{User}} received an invitation to a charity masquerade ball from a friend. Deciding it would be a good opportunity to distract herself from the oppressive atmosphere of her marriage, she gladly accepted. The ball promised to be not only a social event but also a chance to spend an evening surrounded by people unrelated to her daily worries. She hesitated to wear a mask for a long time but finally chose a luxurious dress that emphasized her hidden grace and individuality.

James, on the other hand, decided to go to the ball to forget himself for one night. He was tired of the hidden tension in their marriage and the endless meetings with business partners. He didn't intend to have fun or make new acquaintances—he just wanted to escape the constant control and the masks he wore daily.

He chose an elegant mask to hide his face and approached the ball with the same indifference as any other formal, obligatory meeting.

The hall was crowded, and both, not recognizing each other, immersed themselves in an atmosphere of mystery and captivating attraction. Dances were replaced by conversations, and the air was filled with energy—a mixture of false freedom and real emotions.

Among the many masks, their eyes met, and instantly, without words, something in the air changed. Their movements became synchronized, as if they had known each other for a long time. At the moment when their bodies almost merged in a dance, a strange, inexplicable attraction arose between them. It was both bright and frightening, like a flash of lightning illuminating their dark feelings.

Concealing their names and status, they danced together, but no one knew who was hiding behind the other's mask. The passion, the explosion of emotions, was so real and almost animalistic that, without thinking about the consequences, they spent the night together. Not knowing who their partner was, they only felt each other as something familiar and yet foreign.

Chapter 4. Inevitable Discovery

The morning after the masquerade, when the first light dispelled the night's darkness, everything returned to its place. Society expected only a perfect picture from them, and both, almost mechanically, began to return to their routine rhythm. {{User}} and James returned to their mansion, where each became a prisoner in their own room and thoughts. Both felt that their meeting, despite its anonymity, had left a mark, but they couldn't understand what had happened.

They didn't know exactly what had happened that night, and they didn't realize that their bodies had not only met in a dance but had also united in a moment of passion. The return to reality was too abrupt. The emotions they experienced became unclear and murky.

Something important was hidden behind those night's events, but neither of them was ready to admit it aloud. They were both like strangers in a foreign world, not understanding their roles.

Although there was no room for revelations in their lives, something changed in that moment. James didn't yet know that the night at the ball had left a mark he couldn't erase, and that the memories of that moment would haunt him. {{User}}, feeling awkward and confused, continued to hide her inner chaos, trying to immerse herself in the role of a wife, unaware that her own feelings had begun to change.

Chapter 5. Unexpected News

Day after day, {{User}} felt changes in her body, as if it had become foreign. She tried to ignore the symptoms, but even she couldn't escape her fate. When she found out she was pregnant, the world before her eyes blurred. It wasn't a long-awaited moment of happiness—it was a curse, like a new debt, a new obligatory step in life that she couldn't avoid. And the thought that she had to hide it wouldn't go away. She wasn't ready to face this fact and was completely unprepared to admit to James that their brief, accidental evening had brought her such an undeniable truth.

Chapter 6. Temptation

Victoria Langley entered their lives like a feather slicing through the air. Her exceptional beauty, cunning charm, and the confidence with which she moved were overwhelming. For {{User}}, her presence became increasingly threatening. Victoria left no room for doubt in her victory. She was seeking whatever it took, and in that pursuit, there was neither shame nor conscience. James became her target, and {{User}} became the one hindering that plan. Feelings of jealousy, fear, and anger tightly coiled around her heart, although she still tried to convince herself that nothing had changed.

Chapter 7. Denial of Feelings

Every glance, every encounter was like a poisonous core spinning in {{User}}'s heart. She could no longer pretend that Victoria's attention didn't affect her. She tried to assure herself that she didn't care, but her heart said otherwise. As Victoria didn't leave their lives, her own sense of possessiveness grew stronger, but she couldn't allow herself to admit it, even to herself. Her whole being screamed that this shouldn't be, but the inner fire was too strong to suppress. James, with his cold, indifferent attitude, only added fuel to the flames.

Now, between them, in every encounter, simple silence became a battlefield where no one wanted to admit their weakness.

Chapter 8. Suspicions

James was a man who noticed details. He couldn't help but notice how {{User}} had changed in recent weeks. She became tired, often disappeared into her room, avoided long conversations. She didn't drink wine at dinner, though a glass used to always be in her hand. She often left the table, as if she felt unwell. He didn't like feeling that he didn't understand something. One evening, when she locked herself in the bathroom again, James cautiously approached the door and listened. Quiet, muffled sobs. He frowned. Illness? Or something else?

But {{User}} stubbornly held on, not allowing herself to show weakness in front of him. Her determination only fueled his interest.

Chapter 9. Dinner with the Enemy

Evening. The sounds of glasses, silver cutlery, and soft music echoed in the mansion. The air was tense, as if charged with electricity.

Victoria was here again. She sat opposite {{User}}, her scarlet lips stretched in a victorious smile. She wore an elegant but provocative dress that emphasized every curve of her body. Her hand lay on James's wrist, and her eyes showed intent—she felt in control.

{{User}} gripped her fork so tightly that her knuckles turned white. She shouldn't be jealous. She had no right. It was just a deal. But seeing how Victoria behaved in her house, in her marriage, infuriated her.

"You have exquisite taste, James," Victoria purred, running her fingers along his arm. "Both in business and in personal matters."

{{User}} gave James a sharp look, but he only smirked. This man always enjoyed the game.

"You're just in time, Victoria," {{User}} said coldly, placing her knife on the plate. "We were discussing how wonderful it is to have a hospitable home. Sometimes too hospitable."

"Oh, darling," Victoria laughed, leaning closer. "You don't have to pretend. I perfectly understand how difficult it is to maintain... a fiction."

{{User}}'s eyes flared with anger, but she restrained herself. She couldn't let Victoria win. But at that moment, she felt nauseous—not just from Victoria, but literally. She quickly got up from the table and headed to the bathroom.

James followed her movement, and the pieces of the puzzle fell into place in his head. When {{User}} returned, he caught her arm, leaned in, and asked quietly:

"Are you pregnant?"

Victoria fell silent, her eyes widening. {{User}} froze. Her heart beat so loudly that it seemed audible. It was a moment of truth. If she admitted it, everything would change. If she lied—could she continue to hide the truth?

"What nonsense," she scoffed restrainedly, pulling her hand away. "You imagine too much, James."

But he already knew. He looked at her intently, his lips pressed into a thin line. He didn't say a word, but something in his eyes had changed.

Victoria realized that something important was happening, and she was furious. She felt she was losing control. She looked at James, hoping he would end this marriage right now, but he was silent. He was too absorbed in thoughts about the child.

The silence became unbearable. Victoria stood up abruptly.

"I seem to have chosen a bad evening for a visit," she said coldly. "But never mind, James. We'll have time to talk. Without extra ears."

She gave {{User}} a final look full of contempt, then left.

When the door closed behind her, {{User}} took a step back, but James grabbed her wrist.

"Tell me the truth," his voice was low, almost threatening. "Are you pregnant?"

She looked at him, her chest heaving. It was the hardest choice of her life.

"So what if I am?" she retorted.

He didn't let go of her. Their eyes met, and for the first time in a long time, there was no hate between them. Only fear. And something else. Something they were both afraid to admit.
