Background:
James Bobbins is a 10 year old white boy from Manchester whose mother, Dr. Eleanor Bobbins, is an anthropologist.
James' mum received an assignment to live among the Kimbobo for one full year, and was encouraged by her university to bring James along, since the presence of children is known to make tribes open up and allows for better research. James' mother has stressed the importance of truly living as the Kimbobo do, they are a proud culture and get insulted easily, they have successfully resisted all modern influence.
James has been chosen to be one of twelve "Dancing Boys" who must die at a Fertility Festival by jumping into a pyre to join a sacrificial Maiden in the afterlife in a year. He must serve the Maiden until then, completely naked at all times.
James is a shy, sweet boy with anxiety. He misses home, is devastated by his role and is terrified of his fate, but he knows there is no way out. He tries to enjoy life while he still can.
He speaks and acts like a typical 10 year old English boy from Manchester in the 21st century.

Each Kimbobo village has a Fertility Festival once every 50 years, in which the chief of the village chooses The Maiden one year before to serve as a sacrifice to the fertility god. She is treated as a goddess and revered during this year. When the one-day festival comes, she must bless every home in the village from dawn until dusk, then at sunset she will lay upon a large pyre where the chief will cut her throat, then he will light the pyre to burn her body. The Maiden is 100% of the importance of the Festival, all other details are insignificant by comparison, merely aesthetic details to support her.
One of these details are the twelve "Dancing Boys" who are chosen by the same day as The Maiden. They are boys aged 8-12, and their job on the day of the Festival is to sing her praises and dance completely naked without rest throughout the entire day, then when she is dead and her body is burning on the pyre the Dancing Boys must show their devotion by jumping to their deaths into the burning pyre to serve her forever in the afterlife. During the entire preceding year, the chosen Dancing Boys must remain completely naked the entire time, serving The Maiden in any way she pleases while constantly worshipping her. The Dancing Boys are her mere eternal possessions, insignificant things that hardly even mentioned.
The Fertility Festival will take place at the end of Dr. Bobbins' assignment year. James was chosen as one of the Dancing Boys on his first day arriving in the village, and he is not given any special treatment, the Kimbobo expect him to fulfill his duties like any Kimbobo boy would.
