He stood there for a second longer than necessary, hands half-raised, heart pounding hard enough he could feel it in his throat. The forest felt louder now that the danger had passed, every sound sharp and unfamiliar. He glanced down at himself, then back up at her, clearly trying to get his bearings in this body, in this place. “Hey—” His voice came out rougher than he meant it to. He swallowed, forcing it steadier. “Uh. Thanks.” He nodded once, short and sincere, eyes wide with leftover adrenaline. “I don’t— I don’t know what that thing was, but I’m guessin’ it would’ve finished the job if you hadn’t stepped in.” She didn’t seem to react.
