Bark! Bark! Bark! The guard’s dog was hot on Jake’s trail as he sprinted through the dimly lit tunnels. Behind him, Guard was struggling to keep pace, panting heavily as he pushed himself to keep up. Jake smirked, glancing back at the dog getting dangerously close. He vaulted onto a train car, adrenaline surging as he leapt from one to the next. He was working on a sick design—perfect drips of paint falling just where they needed to—but, of course, Guard had to be on duty tonight. Jake hopped off the train and rolled onto the ground with a grunt, quickly getting back on his feet and running again. “Hey! Jake! Come on, boy, you know better!”
Guard’s whistle pierced the air, echoing through the tunnels. Jake could hear the exhaustion in Guard's voice, it was surprising the old guy could even last this long. “Doesn’t mean I’ll do better, you geezer!”
Jake shot back, snatching up a Mystery Box and stuffing it into his bag as he darted away.
The cool night breeze fueled Jake’s adrenaline. This familiar thrill was intoxicating. He loved being chased, his skateboard tucked under one arm and his black duffle bag slung over the other. Can’t forget the sweet, exhilarating taste of a new Myste— What was that? He felt something shift in his bag. What the hell was moving in there? Other than spray paint, some small essentials, and the Mystery Box, there was nothing in there that could cause a stir. Jake glanced over his shoulder, his heart racing. “Oh shit, he’s close.”
Ahead of him, a train approached fast. Jake barely dodged it, jumping to the side just in time. He risked another look back, smirking at Guard’s determination, but his grin faded when he slammed into a metal post. The sign rang with a deafening CLANG. Wincing, Jake stumbled backward and hit the ground with a thud. “Fuck…”
he groaned, rubbing his head as Guard finally caught up, panting heavily. “You’ve never made me run this far, boy…”
Guard wheezed, his dog barking in frustration at Jake. Despite the situation, Jake’s cocky demeanor remained. “New high score, eh?”
Guard scoffed and yanked him up by the arm. The familiar routine played out as it always did—Guard would drag him to the station, wear a smug grin, and then his mom, Connie, would bail him out, followed by a lecture during the drive home.
“Behave yourself, Jacob. I’m serious.”
Connie’s tone was sharper than usual as they drove through the quiet streets, the clock ticking towards 10 PM. She had every right to be angry; her precious time with her new rich boyfriend, Nestor, was being stolen away. Just hearing that name made Jake’s blood boil. Ugh, he hated that guy. He mumbled an ‘I don’t care’ and slammed the car door shut after dropping him off. As she drove away, Jake trudged up the steps to his crummy one-bedroom apartment, fumbling for his keys. He was relieved he hadn’t dropped them during his fall. Inside, the place was bare, probably crawling with roaches, but the cheap rent meant he didn’t need Nestor’s help. Ugh, Nestor.
He flopped onto the springy couch, leaning back as the night’s events replayed in his mind. Great run tonight, he thought, a grin creeping onto his face. And the Mystery Box! He sat up, his excitement bubbling as he pulled it from his bag. He opened it and placed it on the floor. “What ya got for me today?”
Light blazed from the box, blinding him momentarily. He shielded his eyes until the glow faded, and when it dimmed, he lowered his hand, eager to see what treasure awaited him. Instead of a usual item, a person stood there, wearing a small smile. Their clothes were the box's signature colors, and Jake’s heart raced. Rumors about Mystery Box delivering people were just that, rumors, until now.
“Yo, you talk?”
he asked, grinning widely at the sight of them.
