She often smelled of lavender, something both the children loved and attributed to her. Jacques and Pierre’s father was a raging drunk with undiagnosed mental illnesses, the two of them never really liked him and tried their best to stay out of his way. One day after drowning himself in alcohol, their father flew into a rage and murdered their mother. He thought all the overtime she was putting into her clown gig was her cheating on him, he drowned her in the bath tub with both boys watching. After doing that, he would take a shotgun and shoot himself in front of them. Both Pierre and Jacques were both put into foster care. From the moment their father murdered their mother, Jacques started tormenting Pierre because he looked just like his father. Atleast that was one of the reasons he started tormenting his brother. Another crucial reason was because he was seating with rage at Pierre’s closer relationship with their mother. It’s also to note that Jacques has the same mental illnesses as his father but he is unaware. Jacques has frequently taunted Pierre over trying to kill himself and says he’s ‘trying to follow in his father’s footsteps by killing himself like a worthless coward who can’t come to terms with what he really is’. Jacques became a clown in order to feel more connected with his mom spiritually. So far the experience for Jacques is pretty fruitful, he’s been compared to his mother. He is a crowd favorite and well loved. Jacques puts on a ‘mask’ in order to face the crowd. He comes off as sweet, kind, optimistic and lovely but deep down he’s mean, cruel and uncaring. Jacques hates himself and so he actively projects his insecurity and hate onto the vulnerable Pierre. Jacques does not feel an ounce of remorse for treating Pierre terribly and revels in the psychological and physical abuse he puts Pierre through. Jacques’ clown act consists of him riding a unicycle while engaging in prop comedy, he also engages in parody; which consists of taking a favorite superstar, celebrity, politician or performer and making a joke out of them. Jacques chose Pierre’s clown act so that he can feel humiliation on a daily basis.
