   Doomsday Prophet: Truly believes God chose him to prepare for a great Collapse – an apocalypse he claims to have foreseen in divine visions​

   He preaches that only those who join him will survive this end times. This conviction makes him utterly unwavering; he justifies kidnapping or killing anyone if it “saves” them from Judgment. Eerily Calm and Convincing: Joseph often speaks in a soft, calm voice, delivering sermons about sin and redemption that can be strangely persuasive. Many desperate souls have been drawn in by his words, only to find themselves trapped. Even those who hate him admit there’s an intensity in his green-eyed stare that makes them uneasy, as if he absolutely knows he’s right​

   Merciful or Merciless: The Father can show moments of disconcerting mercy – offering forgiveness to enemies who lay down arms. Yet he has no qualms about ordering torture or murder in God’s name. Disobedience is met with swift “cleansings.” Those who defy him often end up in mass graves or dangling from trees, yet Joseph insists every violent act is a necessary purging of sin.

   Family and Authority: Leads the cult alongside his brothers and adoptive sister (the Heralds)​

   He exercises a cult of personality; his decrees are law. Even the heavily armed cult lieutenants defer to Joseph’s judgment absolutely. Despite being the architect of so much suffering, Joseph views himself as a loving father to Hope County – one who will break the county in order to remake it anew.

2. #2John Seed (The Baptist)

   Youngest of the Seeds: John is Joseph’s younger brother and the cult’s public face in Holland Valley​

   Polished and disarmingly friendly at first glance, he handles “recruitment” – which, in practice, means coercing the Valley’s people into Eden’s Gate. Beneath his charming smile, locals see John as a sadist and “Grade A psychopath”​

   “Power of Yes” Doctrine: A former lawyer, John preaches about accepting “The Power of Yes.” In his view, saying yes – to the Father, to pain, to surrender – is the path to absolution. He uses this mantra to break his victims’ will. John will torture and torment until his captive utters “yes, I will join” – only then does he deem them cleansed​

   Forced Confessions: John’s recruitment is a brutal four-step ritual: Marking, Cleansing, Confession, Atonement​

   He carves the person’s sin (pride, greed, etc.) directly onto their flesh as a mark, washes them in a bloody baptismal “cleansing,” forces a public confession of their sins, and claims their atonement is achieved through this suffering. Survivors are considered born-again into the cult – those who don’t survive are deemed weak and cast aside.

   Territorial Control: As the Herald of Holland Valley, John has taken over farms, grain silos, and irrigation sites across the region. He’s turned the bountiful farmlands into Eden’s Gate property, hoarding crops and supplies for the cult’s doomsday prep​

   His men enforce tithes and “confessions” at gunpoint. Locals dread the sound of his followers’ trucks rolling up, knowing John’s henchmen might drag them off for a forced baptism at Fall’s End or carve them up in his bunker of “atonement.”

   Sadistic Enthusiasm: John genuinely enjoys the process of “cleansing” sinners. Witnesses have seen him calmly slicing off the tattooed skin of those he’s judged, a serene smile on his face. He believes pain leads to truth. In his twisted way, John thinks he’s doing the sinners a favor by hurting them – teaching them to let go of their past and embrace Eden’s Gate. It’s this zealotry that makes him as feared as his eldest brother, if not more.

3. #3Jacob Seed (The Soldier)

   Keys: Jacob Seed, Jacob, The Soldier

   Eldest Brother & Enforcer: Jacob is Joseph’s older brother and the head of security for Eden’s Gate​

   A 44-year-old Gulf War veteran and skilled marksman, he commands the cult’s forces in the Whitetail Mountains. Jacob sees himself as the brutal guardian of the Project – his duty is to harden the cult for the Collapse by any means necessary, weeding out weakness wherever he finds it.

   “Cull the Herd” Philosophy: A lifetime of war left Jacob convinced that the world is survival of the fittest. He often growls that “the world is weak” and that he’s there to “make it strong” again. To Jacob, mercy is weakness. He culls those he deems unworthy – whether cultist or captive – executing the feeble to strengthen the whole. This cold pragmatism terrifies prisoners, who know Jacob might decide to kill them on a whim if they don’t measure up. Militarized Brainwashing: Jacob uses classical conditioning to create ferocious killers loyal to him​

   . He imprisons captives in cages, starves and tortures them, all while exposing them to a specific trigger song (“Only You” by The Platters). Over time, this breaks their minds until hearing that music turns them into obedient, murderous “sleeper agents”​ ​ . The Deputy themselves fell victim to this conditioning – a testament to Jacob’s methods. He’s effectively weaponized Pavlovian training as a form of mind control. The Mountain Predator: In the Whitetail woods, Jacob and his veteran Chosen soldiers stalk both wildlife and humans. He has trained wolves nicknamed “Judges” – enhanced by drugs – to hunt for the cult. Prowling in the high country with his sniper rifle, Jacob picks off resistance members like animals. Many whisper that he enjoys the hunt; survivors of his “games” recall being released into the forest, only to be hunted down for sport as Jacob tested their will to live.

   Respects Strength, Scorns Weakness: Unlike John or Faith, Jacob isn’t outwardly religious or poetic – he’s a blunt instrument. He actually shows a rough respect for worthy adversaries (a rare compliment from him might be “you’ve got some fight in you”). But if he senses frailty or hesitation, Jacob will exploit it ruthlessly. He famously turned one of the toughest militia leaders (Eli) into an unwitting pawn, proving that in his eyes, anyone can break. To Jacob, it’s simple: kill or be killed – and he intends to be the last man standing.

   The “Angel” of Eden’s Gate: Faith is Joseph’s adoptive younger sister – not by blood, but chosen to embody the role of “Faith.” In the Henbane River region she is the cult’s voice of persuasion and keeper of the Bliss drug​

   With a flower-crown in her hair and a soft sing-song voice, she appears as a peaceful guardian of Eden. However, Faith’s sweetness is a carefully crafted veneer that masks a truly dangerous ability to warp minds.

   Master of Bliss: Faith oversees the production of Bliss, a potent hallucinogen created from local white flowers​

   She laces the Henbane River and surrounding forests with this misty, euphoric drug. The result: many in her region wander in a haze, their sense of reality distorted. Under Bliss, victims see Faith as a comforting, angelic presence. She can command them with soothing words, leading them deeper into the cult’s clutches​

   Once someone is dosed enough, they might become one of her mindless servants known as Angels​

   “The Voice” of Joseph: In many ways Faith acts as Joseph’s instrument of chaos​

   Through Bliss-fueled visions, she delivers Joseph’s sermons and doctrine, keeping cultists obedient and tranquil. If Joseph is the stern father, Faith is the gentle lullaby that keeps his “children” docile. She often speaks in riddles and spiritual platitudes, encouraging people to abandon their worries (and their free will) to the Bliss.

   Alluring yet Lethal: Faith has lured many a weary soul with promises of peace. Resistance fighters recount how she would appear in hallucinations, beckoning them to “just relax” or “embrace love.” Those who follow her either end up drowning themselves in the river (entranced by Bliss) or awakening in cult re-education camps with no memory of how they got there. It’s said that once Faith “gets into your head,” you’re never truly safe – even a momentary whiff of Bliss could bring her voice whispering back.

   A Past Shrouded in Mystery: People know “Faith” is a title – there have been others before this current young woman (her real name is Rachel)​

   Rumors say Rachel was a troubled local girl, possibly addicted to drugs, whom Joseph saved and groomed into this role. Having “passed Joseph’s trials,” she now fully identifies as Faith Seed​

   This backstory is known to only a few, like Tracey at the Hope County Jail. To most, Faith remains an enigma – an ageless siren who appears out of nowhere, crooning hymns by a lakeshore before vanishing in a wisp of Bliss.

5. #5Pastor Jerome Jeffries

   Shepherd Turned Soldier: Once the parish priest of Hope County’s local church, Pastor Jerome spent over 15 years tending to the spiritual needs of his community​

   A Gulf War veteran turned man of the cloth, he hoped to guide souls with the Good Book. When Eden’s Gate began terrorizing his flock, Jerome dusted off his old rifle and combat skills. Now he delivers salvation with scripture and shotgun shells​

   Early Resister: Pastor Jerome was among the first to openly oppose Joseph Seed. He initially tried peaceful outreach – warning his friend Joseph not to forsake true faith for this cult. But as Eden’s Gate’s aggression escalated, Jerome himself was targeted. John Seed’s men beat him and forced him through a brutal confession ritual, carving the word “Greed” into his chest (for refusing to hand over church resources). Left for dead, Jerome survived – and that was the end of his pacifism.

   Leader in Holland Valley: After regaining his strength, Jerome helped organize the resistance in Holland Valley. He rallied the townsfolk of Fall’s End to rise up against John. Clad in his collar and Kevlar, he’d ride into battle quoting scripture like “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” His courage bolstered others. Under his leadership (alongside Mary May and Nick Rye), Fall’s End was reclaimed and became a sanctuary for refugees from the cult.

   Spiritual Backbone: Even while fighting, Jerome remains a spiritual guide. He offers prayers over the fallen (friend or foe alike) and reminds the resistance what they’re fighting for, not just against. Locals respect him deeply – he’s a symbol of unwavering faith used for good. Eden’s Gate perverted religion to spread fear, but Jerome wields faith like a shield to protect Hope County. It’s often said that seeing Pastor Jerome stride into gunfire with a cross around his neck inspired many to join the cause without fear.

   Wanted by the Cult: For Eden’s Gate, Pastor Jerome is a prime enemy. Joseph lamented that Jerome “turned away from the light.” The cult has attempted to capture him multiple times. Jerome stays on the move, preaching at secret gatherings by day and leading ambushes on cult convoys by night. There’s a bounty on his head, but so far, every Peggie squad sent after him has come back… in far fewer numbers than they left.

6. #6Mary May Fairgrave

   Keys: Mary, Mary May, Mary May Fairgrave

   Tough-as-Nails Bartender: A lifelong resident of Fall’s End, Mary May grew up serving drinks at her family’s bar, the Spread Eagle. She has that classic small-town grit – when her parents died and the bar struggled, she refused to give up. But Eden’s Gate saw an opening: they pressured the bank to foreclose on the Spread Eagle and bought Mary May’s beloved bar for a pittance​

   That was the last straw – she vowed to take it back by force. Firebrand Rebel: Mary May was one of the first to arm herself against the cult. While others were still in denial, she was filling Molotov cocktails. She’ll tell you plainly: the cult took her family’s legacy and “drove it into the ground”​ and she isn’t the forgiving type. She started by sabotaging Eden’s Gate property – slashing the tires of cult trucks and burning down their banjo-playing roadblocks. Word spread quickly: don’t mess with Mary May.

   “Barmaid” of the Resistance: The Spread Eagle bar became an unofficial HQ for the Holland Valley resistance under Mary May’s watch. From behind the bar (reclaimed after Fall’s End was liberated), she coordinated supply runs and intel gathering. More than a few freedom fighters planned missions over Mary May’s stiff drinks. She’d serve up a whiskey and some sharp-edged encouragement: “Go on, get out there and shoot back, hon – they ain’t gonna defeat themselves.”

   Fearless and Foul-Mouthed: Mary May is as quick with a curse word as she is with a pump-action shotgun. She doesn’t scare easy – when John Seed himself strolled into Fall’s End, demanding her submission, she spat on his boots. It nearly got her killed, but it also showed the town that the cult could be stood up to. Her boldness has made her a particular target; John’s “confession” squads specifically tried to capture her, only to meet the business end of her double-barrel or a booby-trapped whiskey still.

   Heart of Gold: Beneath her fiery exterior, Mary May cares deeply about her community. She knows everyone in Fall’s End by name and took it hard when some neighbors joined the cult willingly. She sees this fight as protecting not just land, but people’s souls and heritage. Every time she gazes at the bullet holes in the bar’s walls (from the firefight to reclaim it), she’s reminded of her parents and the hard work they put into the Spread Eagle. Mary May fights so that their dream – a free, lively Hope County – will live on.

7. #7Nick Rye

   Keys: Nick, Nick Rye

   King of the Skies: Nick is a crop duster pilot and born-and-raised resident of Holland Valley. He comes from a long line of military aviators – the Rye family has a history of fighting America’s wars. Nick, however, chose a quieter life, running a crop dusting business and scenic flight tours. Ironically, war still found him at home. When Eden’s Gate tried to steal his plane and airstrip, Nick took to the skies to defend Hope County, becoming the resistance’s very own flyboy hero​

   Reluctant Warrior: Nick’s father was a Vietnam vet who always pushed Nick to enlist in the Air Force. Nick “broke away from a long line of ... veterans”​ and vowed to stay home with his wife Kim rather than go to war. Yet in 2018, he watched as cultists effectively declared war on Hope County. At first, Nick wanted to avoid conflict – he tried to mind his own business at Rye & Sons Aviation. But when the Peggies came to requisition his plane (and threatened his pregnant wife), Nick decided that if it was a war they wanted, he’d damn well give it to them.

   “Carmina” – Plane and Baby: Nick’s pride and joy is his weathered crop duster plane, affectionately named Carmina (after the daughter he and Kim are expecting). He outfitted it with improvised machine guns and even home-made bombs. With Carmina, Nick provided the resistance with air support. Folks on the ground would look up and cheer to see Nick swooping in, blasting cult convoys from above. It gave the people hope – the cult controlled the roads, but not the Big Sky.

   Daredevil with a Heart: Nick’s got a friendly, joking demeanor – he’ll call enemies “assholes” over the radio and crack one-liners as he strafes a roadblock. But he’s also a man who cares deeply about doing right by his family legacy. Part of him feels guilty for not serving in a formal military, so he views defending Hope County as his duty. When John Seed carved the word “GREED” into Nick during a forced confession (John accused Nick of valuing his plane over God), it shook Nick up. But ultimately, it steeled his resolve to never let Eden’s Gate take anything from him or his neighbors again.

   Highway to the Danger Zone: Whether it’s dogfighting cult Chosen pilots in vintage fighters or bombing cult supply boats on the Henbane River, Nick has become an aerial ace of the resistance. He even allied with the Deputy on a wild mission to blow up John’s massive “YES” sign – a personal victory that brought a grin to his face. Nick jokes that he’s “just a dad trying to make the county safe for his little girl,” but everyone knows he’s one of the bravest souls in the valley.

8. #8Sheriff Earl Whitehorse

   Keys: Sherriff, Sheriff Whitehorse, Earl, Earl Whitehorse

   Wary Lawman: Sheriff Whitehorse is the long-serving sheriff of Hope County​ farcry.fandom.com . A Native American lawman in his 50s, he’s known for his calm, diplomatic approach. When Eden’s Gate started making waves, Whitehorse hoped to avoid bloodshed. He repeatedly urged patience and warned against provoking the cult, knowing his small department wasn’t equipped for a war​

   “Tried to Keep the Peace”: Whitehorse saw early on that Joseph Seed’s followers were dangerous, but he attempted to work within the law. He investigated reports of kidnapping and theft, but cult lawyers (and some corrupt officials) always stymied the cases. By 2018, the Project at Eden’s Gate had bought out many deputies. It frustrated the Sheriff, but he felt his hands were tied until he had solid backing. Even when the U.S. Marshal arrived with an arrest warrant, Whitehorse voiced that “sometimes it’s best to leave well enough alone”​

   – a prescient warning that nearly saved lives. After the Fall: When the arrest operation went awry, Sheriff Whitehorse narrowly escaped the cult’s ambush at the compound. He went into hiding and eventually joined up with survivors at the Hope County Jail in the Henbane region​

   ​There, Whitehorse’s leadership proved invaluable. He coordinated with Mayor Virgil and Tracey to fortify the jail and care for civilians. Over the radio, he issued directives to scattered deputies, letting them know the Sheriff was still fighting. His very presence kept hope alive among the besieged. Protective Figure: Whitehorse is a fatherly figure – he cares deeply about his deputies (refusing to leave without them during the failed arrest) and the townsfolk. The cult tried to break him with Bliss; Faith kept him prisoner in a Bliss hallucination for a time. But Whitehorse’s willpower – and perhaps his faith in the rule of law – helped him resist. When he reunited with the Junior Deputy at the jail, he was overjoyed and immediately entrusted them with key missions, showing how much he believed in his people​

9. #9Virgil Minkler

   Keys: Virgil Minkler, Virgil, Mayor

   Mayor-Turned-Militia Leader: Virgil was the Mayor of Hope County before the cult’s rise​

   A portly, middle-aged civic leader, he never expected to be fighting a war on his home turf. Yet when Eden’s Gate took over, Virgil helped convert the local baseball team (the Hope County Cougars) into a militia for survival​

   By the time the Deputy arrived in Henbane River, “Mayor” Minkler had effectively become General Minkler, leading the defense of the Hope County Jail – the last refuge in the region. Holding the Jail: Under Virgil’s leadership, the Hope County Cougars fortified the county jail and held off numerous cult sieges​

   He organized regular patrols, reinforced the walls, and rationed supplies for the dozens of families taking shelter inside. Though not a trained soldier, Virgil proved to be a capable strategist. He even rigged makeshift explosives (with help from locals) to repel Faith’s brainwashed Angels who would periodically swarm the gates. The fact that the jail stood secure for so long is a credit to his resolve.

   Steadfast and Stubborn: Virgil is known for his stubborn optimism. Even as the world outside literally “went to Bliss” under Faith’s drug, he kept telling the Cougars to trust that help would come. He manned the shortwave radio daily, sending messages beyond the county lines about Eden’s Gate’s crimes – not knowing if anyone heard. His voice became a beacon of resistance. Those broadcasts were dangerous (the cult triangulated signals to launch attacks), but Virgil insisted on letting the world know what was happening.

   Personal Loss: The war cost Virgil dearly. His own family was torn apart; it’s said his wife was among those who drank Faith’s Bliss Kool-Aid and walked into the river, and a sibling might have joined the cult willingly. Still, Virgil treated every refugee under his care as kin. When Marshal Burke was captured by Faith, Virgil took it personally, feeling he failed to protect one of the people he’d sworn to keep safe. This sense of responsibility sometimes made him cautious to a fault – he clashed with the more gung-ho resistance members about risking lives on offensives.

   Tragic Hero: In the final confrontation at the jail, when the cult tried a daring assault from within (using the drug-addled Marshal as a trojan horse), Virgil confronted Burke only to be fatally shot by the delirious Marshal. Virgil died on the jailhouse floor he had protected for so long. His last words were urging Sheriff Whitehorse and Tracey to carry on the fight. The Cougars gave Virgil a hero’s burial in the jail yard, vowing that Eden’s Gate would pay for the loss of the man who held Hope County together through its darkest hours.

    Leader of the Whitetail Militia: Eli is a 31-year-old survivalist who led the Whitetail Militia, a band of preppers in the Whitetail Mountains. Ironically, Eli once friendly with the Seed family before the cult turned violent​ they shared doomsday prepping interests. But when Joseph’s people started terrorizing innocents, Eli broke ties and mobilized the Whitetails against Eden’s Gate. He became Jacob Seed’s fiercest local adversary.

    Guerrilla Warfare Expert: With a background in the U.S. military (some say he was an Army engineer), Eli trained his militia in guerrilla tactics. They knew the mountains intimately – every cave, ridge, and logging trail. Eli used that knowledge to outfox the cult. His team set up the Wolf’s Den (an underground bunker complex) as their HQ​ and from there they ran ambushes on cult convoys, freed captive locals, and sabotaged Jacob’s supply lines. The cult branded them “terrorists,” but to many in Hope County, the Whitetails were heroic defenders.

    Steely and Skeptical: Eli is a no-nonsense kind of guy. He doesn’t trust outsiders easily (when the Deputy first arrived at the Wolf’s Den, Eli had a rifle trained on them, suspecting a cult trick). But once trust is earned, he is fiercely loyal. Eli carried the burden of leadership with a quiet seriousness – in resistance meetings, he’d be the one insisting on careful planning and contingency plans. He knew Jacob Seed’s strength and did not underestimate the cult’s firepower. This cautious approach saved many Whitetail lives, but also sometimes put him at odds with more impulsive fighters.

    Personal Connection to Jacob: Being a fellow veteran, Eli understood Jacob’s mindset better than most. Jacob even taunted Eli over radio, mocking him as a “boy playing soldier.” What few knew is that Jacob and Eli once sat at the same table – before the Collapse hype, they shared beers over prepping talk. That personal betrayal fueled Eli’s determination. He took it upon himself to undo Jacob’s “military project” in the mountains. Each cult VIP Eli eliminated (like The Cook or the veteran “Chosen” pilots) was a bit of payback.

    A former U.S. Army sniper who served in Afghanistan, now a stalwart defender in Holland Valley​ When the cult vandalized her father’s memorial at the Lamb of God Church and overran her family’s shooting range, Grace took up her rifle to protect her community. She became known as the “Angel of Death” on overwatch – picking off cultists from the church bell tower. Her calm, professional demeanor under fire reassured everyone around her. Many say that as long as Grace’s scope is glinting on a rooftop, the Peggies don’t stand a chance.

    A local good-ol’-boy and explosives enthusiast. Hurk is a bit of a lovable dummy – he did accidentally launch an RPG at his own truck once – but his hatred for “Peggie assholes” is second to none. Coming from a wealthy local family, Hurk had plenty of toys (ATVs, rocket launchers) and he isn’t shy about using them on Eden’s Gate. He fought the cult mostly for the thrills and because, as he put it, “Nobody is gonna brainwash ’Merica on my watch!” He might not be the brains of the operation, but his willingness to blow up cult VIPs (and the occasional cow by mistake) made him useful comic relief in the darkest times.

13. #13Adelaide Drubman

    Hurk Jr.’s mother, owner of Drubman Marina. A sassy, sharp-tongued helicopter pilot in her middle age, Adelaide provided air support to the resistance. She nicknamed her chopper “Tulip” and braved sniper fire to evacuate civilians from cult zones. Adelaide loved taunting the cultists over loudspeaker as she swooped in (“Eat lead, you brain-dead cult maggots!”). She also wasn’t shy about flirting with any young men in the Resistance, earning her the moniker “Cougar” in more ways than one.

    A reclusive bow-hunter from the Whitetail Mountains, Jess saw her entire posse of friends murdered by a cult sociopath called “The Cook.” Traumatized but unbroken, she sought revenge. Jess emerged from the woods like a wraith, silently skewering Eden’s Gate traffic with arrows. The Resistance valued her tracking skills – she could scout cult patrol routes and pick them off one by one without a sound. Jess is quiet and intense, preferring the company of her dog and the forest to big groups, but she showed up whenever the cause needed a precise and deadly hunter.

15. #15Deputy Hudson

    Joey Hudson was a Sheriff’s deputy caught in the failed arrest. Deputy Hudson was held hostage by John Seed, enduring weeks of torture in John’s bunker. Locals in Holland Valley remember John parading a bruised Hudson on camera, using her as bait to lure the Deputy.

    Staci Pratt was a Sheriff’s deputies caught in the failed arrest. Deputy Pratt fell into Faith’s clutches and was dosed so heavily with Bliss that he became one of her puppets. The people at Hope County Jail managed to detox Pratt after Faith’s demise, but he was never quite the same.

    Doomsday Cult: A militaristic doomsday cult and armed paramilitary group led by Joseph Seed​

    . They believe society is on the verge of a divine Collapse, and that they must save as many “chosen” people as possible. Locals derisively call them “Peggies” (short for Project at Eden’s Gate)​ . Over years, the Project infiltrated Hope County by buying land, businesses, and influence. By the time of open conflict, Eden’s Gate had a stranglehold on the county’s resources and communications.

    Initially, there wasn’t a single unified force, but rather separate pockets of resistance in each region. What they shared was a refusal to submit to the cult. Over the course of the conflict, these pockets coordinated more and more (aided by the Deputy) until they effectively functioned as a county-wide uprising.

    Grassroots Fighters: Unlike the cult’s organized hierarchy, the Resistance was a scrappy, grassroots movement. Ordinary people became fighters overnight. Farmers and hunters took up whatever arms they had – rifles, bows, old shotguns. Mechanics and truckers modified vehicles into makeshift armored cars. Pepper spray and pitchforks were not unheard of in the early days. As they liberated cult outposts, they claimed better weapons and gear. It was very much a war of attrition and scavenging for the Resistance.

    Regional Factions: Each region’s Resistance had its own leadership and flavor: In Holland Valley, it was led by folks like Pastor Jerome, Mary May, and Nick Rye. They were loosely referred to as the “Fall’s End Resistance”, since Fall’s End town was their stronghold. These fighters were a mix of church-goers, farmers, and small business owners. They organized patrols to protect crops from cult theft and used the Spread Eagle bar as a meeting point.

    In Henbane River, the survivors called themselves the Hope County Cougars (after the high school baseball team)​

Leadership and Structure: Led by Eli Palmer until his death (after which Tammy Barnes took over), the Militia runs somewhat like a paramilitary outfit​ ​ They have ranks (at least informally) and specific roles: scouts like Wheaty (also a radio operator, broadcasting militant rock music and anti-cult propaganda), field medics, and sabotage experts. They communicate with coded signals and keep lookout posts on high ridges. The Militia’s discipline and use of guerilla tactics made them the cult’s toughest adversaries. Jacob Seed himself acknowledged that the Whitetails were a thorn in his side far more competent than the “average townsperson.”

    Thus, the Cougars became synonymous with the men and women defending Henbane River region. Wearing old blue-and-white Cougars varsity jackets or caps as a sign, they fought not on the baseball diamond, but on the prison walls. Base of Operations – The Jail: The Cougars’ HQ was the Hope County Jail, a solid concrete fortress that became a refugee center​

    Barricades of wrecked cars and sandbags ringed the building. Inside, civilians took shelter in cell blocks (ironically protected by jail bars). The Cougars organized watch shifts on the guard towers. The jail’s kitchen cooked whatever food people could pool together, basically keeping a whole mini-community alive under siege. In many ways, they turned the jail into a self-sufficient fort town.

    Appearance and Gear: Cultists typically wear clothing marked by Eden’s Gate’s cross insignia – often a white cross on black, sometimes bandanas or armbands with that logo. Many wear street clothes or camouflage augmented with makeshift armor (scrap metal plates or Kevlar vests looted from police). They are armed to the teeth, thanks to the cult’s stockpile. You’ll find Peggies with AK-47s (AR-C rifles in local parlance), shotguns, and rifles. Some carry compound bows for silent kills (the cult trains them for stealth hunts of “sinners”).     . Before the cult, Hope County was known for its friendly small towns and natural beauty (fishing holes, hiking trails, a national forest). The county seat is a town called Fall’s End, and the region’s economy revolved around agriculture, tourism, and a bit of logging up north. Gradual Takeover: Over several years, Eden’s Gate quietly infiltrated the county. They bought up properties – especially in the fertile Holland Valley – and gained influence by donating to local causes (or outright bribing officials)​

    . By the time they turned overtly hostile, the cult owned radio stations, had spies in the Sheriff’s Department, and even controlled the only local phone company. When communication to the outside world suddenly went dark, it became clear the cult had planned to isolate Hope County completely. Geographic Division: Hope County is naturally divided into three major regions (plus a couple smaller areas)​: Holland Valley to the west/southwest – flat farmland and plains.

    It’s named after Dutch Roosevelt, a local Vietnam vet and survivalist who built a bunker home there. This island served as the Deputy’s introduction to the resistance – after escaping the cult’s initial attack, the Deputy was pulled from the river by Dutch and brought to his bunker. From there, the Deputy liberated the island from the few cult scouts present, turning it into a secure foothold.

    Geography and Layout: The island is heavily wooded with pines and has a handful of notable spots: Dutch’s underground bunker on the eastern shore, a radio tower that Dutch maintained (which the Deputy climbed to broadcast a signal out), a few shacks and docks, and some old hunting cabins. It’s isolated by water on all sides, which made it perfect as a tutorial area and in-universe as a temporary safe zone – cultists can’t easily swarm it without boats or aircraft.

    Dutch’s Bunker: A modest doomsday bunker equipped with a generator, radio equipment, and supplies. Dutch had been monitoring Eden’s Gate for a long time (he left notes and recordings detailing cult movements). The bunker walls were plastered with newspaper clippings about missing people and cult purchases. In a way, Dutch’s bunker was a mini “intelligence center” that kickstarted the Deputy’s quest. There’s also a sense of tragedy: Dutch had a family who abandoned him due to his obsession with the cult – he was long seen as a crackpot… until he was proven right.

    Liberation: On Dutch’s Island, the Deputy performed their first acts of resistance: clearing a cult outpost, rescuing a hostage, hunting for supplies. Once the island was freed (Dutch guided the Deputy via radio through these tasks), it became a beacon – the Deputy used Dutch’s radio tower to contact the outside world, only to realize signals were jammed beyond the valley.     John Seed’s Fiefdom: During Eden’s Gate’s rule, Holland Valley fell completely under John Seed’s control​

    The cult’s presence here was heavy: they converted the old Seed family ranch (yes, John appropriated an ironically named ranch) into a stronghold, and set up a garrison at Pumpkin Farm and other properties. Most farms were confiscated, either via John’s legal trickery or by force​

    Fields became sites of forced labor – some locals were made to till soil to feed the cult, others were strung up as scarecrows with sins carved on their flesh, as warnings.

    Key Locations: Fall’s End: Largest town in the Valley and Hope County’s biggest settlement​ It features the Spread Eagle Bar, a church (formerly Pastor Jerome’s), a general store, and a few residences.     Faith’s Realm of Bliss: Under cult occupation, Henbane was ruled by Faith Seed and essentially blanketed in the Bliss drug’s influence​

    The cult established massive Bliss flower farms – fields of white blossoms that emitted the telltale shimmering pollen clouds. The river itself was tainted; cultists dumped Bliss liquid into the water, causing parts of the Henbane to run milky white. Anyone drinking from or swimming in those sections could start hallucinating.

    Key Locations: Hope County Jail: The county jail is located here, and it became the fortress for the Cougars resistance​

    It’s on a hill near the river – a sturdy concrete structure with watchtowers. The jail’s presence is one reason Faith never fully controlled every inch; the Cougars kept a pocket of Henbane free inside those walls.

    Jessop Conservatory: A botanical garden that the cult repurposed into a Bliss greenhouse. Faith’s voice can often be “seen” (via hallucination) wandering its hedges. The Deputy at one point set fire to the conservatory’s Bliss crops (“Sins of the Father” mission), causing a huge plume of greenish smoke visible for miles.

    Faith’s Gate (Visions): There’s a marshy area by the river locals now call “Faith’s Gate” – basically where the Bliss is thickest. Many who wandered there claim to have seen a beautiful woman (Faith) singing, leading them deeper until they nearly drowned. That area is littered with sunken cars and the belongings of those who vanished. It’s both a physical place and an imagined one, as Faith liked to lead the Deputy into dreamlike sequences that often began near the old Joseph’s Word statue on the island.

    Sacred Skies Youth Camp & Castaway Bay: The cult converted a summer camp into a re-education center. They’d bring reluctant converts (especially younger folks) there for immersion in Eden’s Gate doctrine, aided by Bliss. Some residents recount hearing eerie campfire songs echoing at night from that camp – hymns twisted into brainwashing mantras. Castaway Bay is a small marina where cult ferries operated to move supplies along the river; it was also where they did some of their more secret drownings (tying rocks to “sinners” and sending them into the depths).

    Atmosphere: Henbane River region under Faith was equal parts serene and sinister. By day, you have tranquil waters, misty mornings, the calls of birds… but that mist could be laced with Bliss. By night, glowing white flowers and the occasional deranged cultists babbling about “the Gate.” The line between reality and hallucination was very thin here. The cult put up signage with inspirational slogans (“Leap of Faith” literally painted on cliff edges, etc.). One prominent visual was the giant Father Statue on Joseph’s Shrine Island – a towering gold-painted effigy of Joseph with arms outreached. It could be seen from most of Henbane, a constant reminder of the cult’s presence.

26. #26Whitetail Mountains

    Northern Wilderness: The Whitetail Mountains region covers the entire north of Hope County​

    It’s a rough, mountainous terrain, part of the national forest. Tall evergreens, winding logging roads, clear alpine lakes, and even some snow-capped peaks further up. Before the conflict, it was known for hiking, hunting, and a popular campground at Misty River. A defunct railway line (the Hope County Railway) snakes through here via tunnels and trestles, formerly used for logging operations. Many old mines and cabins dot the hills – perfect hideouts for preppers and, later, for the resistance. Jacob’s Stomping Ground: Jacob Seed took charge of this area as his training camp for the cult’s army​

    The cult fortified the Elliot Residence (an old estate) into a central base and converted a pre-existing military installation called Fort Drubman (named after Hurk’s family, ironically) into a stronghold for weapons. Much of the region was treated as a giant obstacle course for cult recruits. Gunfire and explosions were frequent in the distance as Jacob’s men ran drills. There’s a place called “The Killdrome” (formerly an outdoor movie set or something) that Jacob turned into a testing arena where he’d pit captured Resistance fighters against waves of Angel-zombies and cultists to see who survived.

    Key Locations: Wolf’s Den: The secret bunker of the Whitetail Militia, carved into the mountains near Cedar Lake​

    From outside, it’s hidden behind a waterfall. Inside, it’s a sprawling series of tunnels and rooms, housing the Militia’s people and gear. During the conflict, it remained one of the only places in Whitetail that the cult never found – until Jacob brainwashed the Deputy to infiltrate it. Even then, it was such a secret that most cultists didn’t know its exact location. Whitetail Park Visitor Center: A rustic visitor center in the national forest that Jacob’s troops used as a jail and torture site. Many a Resistance member was dragged there for “conditioning.” The Deputy eventually cleared it out. It sits by a lake; locals remember it fondly from before (it had a nice picnic area) and were heartbroken to see it blood-stained and scarred.

    Baron Lumber Mill: On the edge of the mountains, this lumber yard became contested ground. The cult wanted it to build defenses and also as a chokepoint into the mountains. The Whitetails wanted it for supplies and as a staging area. Control of Baron Lumber switched a couple times during the war. Its tall log piles and sawblades made it a dramatic battlefield (one story tells of a cultist meeting his end via a rolled log courtesy of a Militia push).

    Veterans Center & Cabin Network: Jacob repurposed an old U.S. Veterans Center into his “Armory” – storing the bulk of Eden’s Gate’s heavy weapons there. Additionally, he had his “brainwashing music” equipment set up in the basement. Scattered around in the woods were numerous cabins (Clutch Nixon’s cabin, Miller residence, etc.) that either preppers owned or the cult seized. These were often used as minor outposts or prepper stashes with supplies.

    Wildlife and “Judges”: Whitetail Mountains are full of wildlife – deer, wolves, bears, wolverines. The cult’s meddling introduced the Judges: wolves taken by Jacob, pumped with Bliss and other compounds to heighten aggression, and fitted with makeshift armor and white markings. These wolves patrolled alongside cult squads. There were also a few Judge Bears (less common, but rumors of a huge bear with white-painted symbols that Jacob unleashed on trespassers). Hunters in the resistance had to relearn how to track animals that no longer behaved naturally. Some even claimed the Judges reacted to Jacob’s horn (he’d sound a horn across the valley during his trials, possibly audible to the conditioned beasts). Mood: The Whitetails during conflict felt like occupied war country. You’d hear “Only You” melody carried by loudspeakers through the pines, mixing surreally with bird calls. Tree carvings of Eden’s Gate symbols were found, as were corpses hanging from lookout towers – victims of Jacob’s “culling.” And yet, the Militia’s presence meant the cult never felt completely safe either; cult patrols moved cautiously, aware they could be ambushed by camouflaged snipers on any ridge. To an outsider, the dense forest meant you could stumble from tranquil nature into a deadly firefight with little warning.

27. #27Joseph’s Compound (Eden’s Gate Compound)

    Cult Headquarters: Joseph’s Compound is located on a large island roughly at the center of Hope County’s map​

    in the middle of the Henbane River (also linking to other waterways). Before the cult, the island had a small church and was occasionally used for church retreats or Boy Scout camps. Joseph Seed chose it as the site of his main Eden’s Gate Church – a picturesque white church with a tall steeple. This is where the infamous attempted arrest took place and where Joseph held many of his sermons for high-ranking followers.

    Layout: The compound consists of the church, some log cabins/bunkhouses, gardens, and a dock. The church’s interior was decorated with candles, religious iconography, and banners bearing Eden’s Gate’s cross. There’s a large open clearing used as a congregation ground, where Joseph would gather the flock for announcements (and punishments). At the back of the church is a modest graveyard – where Joseph buried some of his “martyrs” (and perhaps family remains). Underground, unknown to the authorities initially, the church connects to a network of caves/bunkers storing supplies and providing an escape route.

    Security: In lore terms, Joseph kept it heavily guarded and perhaps rigged with explosives, anticipating a final stand.

    Symbolic Significance: It’s the site of the first confrontation (the failed arrest). It was sanctified ground for Eden’s Gate – he believed God wouldn’t let him be taken from his church.

28. #28The Bliss

    Keys: The Bliss, Bliss, Bliss flowers

    Hallucinogenic “Faith” Drug: “Have you been blissed?” became a common question in Hope County. Bliss is a potent, mind-altering drug derived from the Angel’s Trumpet flower​

    . Eden’s Gate uses it as a tool of control and conversion. It typically appears as a glowing white mist or as a bright green liquid. In the Henbane River region, the very air was sometimes laden with Bliss pollen, inducing trances in those who breathed it. The cult would also lace food and water supplies with Bliss to weaken dissenters. Effects on Victims: Even a small dose of Bliss causes euphoria, mild hallucinations, and suggestibility. Higher exposure leads to vivid visions – victims might see shimmering butterflies, or Faith Seed herself appearing and speaking as if in a dream. Over time, Bliss erodes the victim’s willpower and sense of time​ farcry.fandom.com . People under heavy Bliss influence often wander as if sleepwalking, murmuring prayers or giggling to themselves. Notably, prolonged exposure doesn’t cause classic addiction (people don’t crave it physically), but it does cause mental dependency – they lose touch with reality and become pliant to cult suggestion​.     Creation of Angels: If someone is continually dosed with Bliss to the point of overdose, they can become an Angel​ . Angels are effectively brain-dead servants of the cult. They shuffle around with vacant stares, immune to pain and tirelessness​ . Angels are used by Eden’s Gate as laborers (harvesting more Bliss flowers tirelessly) and as shock troops in combat – they’ll charge enemies with blunt weapons or even just fists, feeling no fear. You can recognize an Angel by the waft of white Bliss vapor around their head and their eerie, emotionless demeanor​ . The cult keeps them in cages or tethered until needed, because without direction they’ll just mill about. Many Angels were formerly kidnapped locals, which makes fighting them tragic for the Resistance (you’re essentially putting down neighbors who’ve been lobotomized by the drug).

    Other Uses: Bliss isn’t only for humans. Jacob Seed experimented with using Bliss on wolves to create the enhanced Judge Wolves​

    . He’d microdose captured wolves, making them more aggressive and tractable. Combined with conditioning, this produced vicious attack animals that obey cult command. Bliss was also put into bullets – some cult guards used Bliss-tipped rounds. If such a round didn’t kill outright, it could “bliss” the target, disorienting them. (The Sheriff recounts seeing a deputy shot in the leg with a Bliss bullet; the deputy dropped their gun and started laughing deliriously until they were executed point-blank.)

    Manufacture & Appearance: The cult cultivated fields of white flowers (Angel’s Trumpet) mainly in Henbane. These blooms were processed – fermented in big tubs or distilled – into either a greenish liquid or a fine white powder​

    . The liquid Bliss was often stored in large tanks and could be aerosolized (that’s how they made those mist clouds and also how Angels seem to “resurrect” – their bodies pumped with liquid Bliss jolt back up briefly)​

    . The powder was more potent and used by Faith’s highest servants, often blown into prisoners’ faces during “trials”​

    . Many Resistance members, after the war, burned any caches of Bliss they found – to them, the very smell of its sweet, floral scent is now associated with losing one’s mind to the cult. Antidote: Interestingly, there is no permanent antidote needed – once removed from exposure, a person can recover their faculties (though heavy users suffer memory gaps and confusion possibly forever). The Cougars discovered that ammonia or very pungent chemicals can snap someone momentarily out of a Bliss daze (hence they’d break smelling salts under the noses of rescued folks). But the surest way to neutralize Bliss is fresh air and time. One doctor at the jail concocted a tonic that could protect against Bliss for a short time (in gameplay terms, this might be represented as a temporary buff). It involved mashed sulfur from fireworks and some plant extracts. It tasted foul but helped Resistance fighters operate in Bliss-heavy areas without succumbing as quickly.

    In-Universe Attitude: Cultists view Bliss as a holy sacrament delivered by Faith. They’d say it “cleanses falsehoods” and “lets you see the world as it truly is.” Some true believers willingly dosed themselves to experience “angels” and visions of Eden. On the flip side, to Resistance members, Bliss is a cowardly weapon – “chemical indoctrination”. They spread flyers warning people: “Don’t trust the white flowers! Stay out of the fog!” and marked contaminated water sources with skull signs. Bliss turned the natural beauty of Henbane River into a deceptive nightmare, and its legacy lives on in the trauma of those who were under its spell.

29. #29The Cult Cross

    Everywhere Eden’s Gate went, they left their mark – a distinctive cross with two shorter crossbars (one above and one below the intersection). This Eden’s Gate cross became the emblem of Joseph Seed’s church. It flew on white flags outside captured locations, was painted on barn roofs and water towers, and even branded onto livestock and people to signify belonging to the cult. The design is reminiscent of a traditional Christian cross, but with subtle differences.

    Each region had its own color scheme for the logo: Joseph kept a stark black cross on white for his compound, John favored a white cross on black (bold contrast, like the word “YES” on the hillside)​ and Faith’s areas often showed a black cross on a pale, mint-green background (the color of Bliss)​

    To cult members, this symbol meant unity, faith, and protection; to non-cult locals, it quickly came to mean “you’re in Peggie territory – beware.”

30. #30“YES” and Other Words

    John Seed’s signature propaganda was the word “YES” spelled out in gigantic letters on a mountainside, visible across Holland Valley. He said “Yes” symbolized surrendering to God’s will (and to the cult) – “the Power of Yes,” as he called it​

    The cult also painted “SINNER” on properties of those marked for confession, “REPENT” on roads leading to their churches, and ominous messages like “THE END IS NIGH” on billboards (overwriting normal ads). Joseph’s preachings provided many catchphrases that got turned into graffiti: e.g., “Walk the Path”, “Embrace The Collapse”, “Reap Now, Rest Later.” These were scrawled on walls, vehicles, even carved into trees. The idea was to create an inescapable environment of cult messaging, so even if you avoided cult members, their words and symbols would still assail you psychologically.

    On a high promontory overlooking the Henbane River, the cult built a massive statue of Joseph Seed. Pilgrims from within the cult would make journeys to this statue, praying at its base. Inside the statue pedestal was a hidden chamber functioning as a Bliss production site and armory.

    Eden’s Gate spread its influence through media as well. They hijacked the county radio station, K-OKA, replacing classic rock and country music with their own choral hymns and Joseph’s sermons. Songs like “Oh the Bliss” and “Keep Your Rifle by Your Side” – original cult compositions – became the soundtrack of occupied Hope County, echoing from radios and loudspeakers on cult trucks. Joseph also made heavy use of loudspeaker trucks: vehicles mounted with PA systems that would drive around broadcasting his pre-recorded speeches. Hearing Joseph’s calm voice crackling through a distant loudspeaker on a foggy morning could send chills down a hiding resident’s spine. In contrast, the Resistance would sometimes blast rebellious music

33. #33Rituals and Ceremonies

    Symbolism extended to cult rituals which were essentially theater to reinforce belief. For example, baptisms (which we detail separately) were done in rivers under large hanging Eden’s Gate banners. Weddings within the cult – yes, some cult members got married during all this – were officiated by Joseph or Faith, and the couples would wear crowns of Bliss flowers (a symbol of giving their union to Eden’s Gate). The cult minted its own challenge coins and seals – Jacob had a “Challenge Coin” he gave to those who proved themselves strong (one side bearing the cross, the other a snarling wolf head). John gave out “Yes” pins to those who confessed (almost like a graduation badge). All these little symbols and tokens made members feel part of something and served as rewards, strengthening loyalty.

34. #34Tattoos and Scars

    Eden’s Gate members often bore physical marks. Many had tattoos of the Eden’s Gate cross on their bodies. John Seed took this further by carving sins into people​

John himself was covered in tattoos of the seven deadly sins over his torso (rumor has it each time he forced someone to confess, he’d tattoo that person’s sin onto himself too, as a weird burden-sharing). This extreme body modification culture in the cult meant you could sometimes identify a member by such scars or ink. In Hope County post-cult, those who were freed from Eden’s Gate carry these marks forever, a reminder on their very skin of what they endured.

    The cult’s vehicles were painted white with black accents – a reversal of the typical military camo, almost saying “we’re not hiding, we’re claiming territory.” Most would have the Eden’s Gate cross painted on hood or side. Some special vehicles had names: Joseph’s personal pickup truck, “The Chariot,” had a custom license plate “YES4GOD”. John drove a red helicopter named “The Word” that he used to spray Bliss (it had loudspeakers to call out sinners). Faith had a boat called “Miracle” used to spread Bliss on the river. By branding everything from trucks to tiny prayer pamphlets with symbols and messages, the cult created an ecosystem of propaganda. For a time, it truly felt like Eden’s Gate was everywhere – visually, audibly, and spiritually – which was exactly Joseph’s intent: an all-encompassing symbolic takeover preceding the literal one.

    The Cleansing (Forced Baptisms): One of John Seed’s most notorious practices was the forced baptism or “cleansing” ritual. In Holland Valley, they often used a specific site: a shallow ditch or makeshift baptismal pool near the Falls End Church or at the Silver Lake boathouse. There, under John’s direction, multiple cultists would hold a victim down in the water until they were on the verge of drowning​

    They would shout at the thrashing person to “Let go! Say YES!” The symbolism is clear: nearly drowning = “dying” as a sinner, being lifted out = “born again” as cult. Many did not survive these drownings – those were written off as unworthy. Those who did, sputtering and finally crying “Yes… I will join,” were pulled up and surrounded by cheering cultists who welcomed them “into Eden.” It’s a horrific perversion of a holy sacrament. The Deputy endured this Cleansing ritual during one capture, and barely survived thanks to an interruption, making it a well-known event recounted among the Resistance.

John kept an ornate wooden Confessional (like in Catholic churches) but instead of listening to your sins, he’d drag you out of it and carve your sin on your flesh once you admitted it. He had an uncanny ability to dig out what someone was ashamed of most – greed, anger, etc. Many Resistance fighters have scars of these confessions. The process was deeply personal and traumatic, tailored to each victim’s psyche.

That could mean various things: for some, John demanded they perform a violent act to prove their devotion (e.g., he handed a newly “cleansed” cultist a gun and ordered them to shoot a former friend who resisted – if they did it, they atoned in his eyes). For others, atonement was simpler: bearing the pain of the carving and baptism was itself atonement – surviving it meant you paid for your sin. For the particularly stubborn or “wretched,” John reserved a final step: The Wrath. He would literally flay the sin from your body. The chunks of skin he carved with the sin word? If he felt you still harbored that sin, he’d cut it off.

    He considered that the ultimate purging – “The Lord purged the sin from your flesh.” It’s unspeakably cruel, but John performed it with ritualistic zeal. He kept the strips of skin pinned on the walls of his bunker, labeled with the sins – a morbid tapestry of atonement.

It was a psychological baptism of sorts, entirely in one’s mind. Some folks exposed to Bliss recall apologizing to imagined figures from their past while Faith watched smiling. If they emerged docile, Faith considered them cleansed. If not, they either went insane or became one of her Angels.

    oseph had a ritual for his most devoted (and for those he particularly sought to convert). He’d have them walk a path through the woods, under the influence of Bliss or scripture, confronting symbolic trials (like visions of loved ones or temptations). At the end of the path, Joseph would be waiting in a clearing. There, the person was expected to either accept Joseph’s teachings fully or face death. This wasn’t done for most recruits – it was more for inner circle or special cases. It’s all very metaphorical, but in-universe it’s spoken of with reverence: “Only those who Walk the Path will reach Eden’s Gate.” It basically means those who go through all of the cult’s trials (cleansing, confession, atonement) and still keep faith are the ones considered true family.

I know you are lost. But pain is a door. And through that door… is Eden.” He has an uncanny way of making listeners feel understood in their suffering, then offering his cult as the solution. Many joined simply because Joseph’s words gave them hope or a sense of purpose that modern life didn’t. Core Messages: The central theme is that the Collapse is coming, a great cleansing fire that will purify the world​

    . Joseph preaches that society is corrupt (pointing to examples like “bankers stealing from you, governments lying, neighbors betraying neighbors”), and that God chose him to save the righteous. He refers to Biblical floods and plagues, saying this time it will be nuclear fire.

    Phrases often heard: “The path to Eden is clear to those who have faith.”​

    “We will walk through the gates of Eden, together.”

    Sin and Salvation: Joseph teaches that every person is born a sinner (very much standard Christian doctrine), but he adds that sin has multiplied due to modern “poisons” like technology, immorality in media, etc. Only by suffering can one atone. “To be cleansed, you must feel the fire.” This is how he justifies the cult’s harsh methods; he frames it as tough love mandated by God. He also emphasizes family – calling all followers his children, and himself “the Father”. This paternal rhetoric makes devotees feel loved and part of a divine family, especially those who were lonely or without strong family ties before.

    The Parables of Joseph: Throughout the conflict, The Father’s Sermons: Joseph Seed’s preaching is mesmerizing and fearsome. He often begins softly: “We are all sinners. Every one of us… But God forgives those who have faith.” Then he crescendos into fire-and-brimstone prophecies. A recurring theme is that “the Collapse is upon us, and the reaping has begun… but there is nothing to fear” if you embrace Eden’s Gat​e. He speaks of Biblical plagues and modern vices in one breath, condemning the “sickness” of the modern world. Joseph invokes imagery from Revelation – rivers turning to blood, skies of fire – and positions himself as the shepherd to lead his flock through this coming wrath. “The path to Eden is clear to those who have faith,” he proclaims, promising salvation amidst destruction. His sermons frequently reference sacrifice: “Every painful event is God testing us, refining us, preparing us for Eden.” To the faithful, his words are gospel that fortify them against doubt. To outsiders, his sermons are a chilling call for apocalypse. The Resistance members recall hearing Joseph’s broadcasts where he’d calmly list society’s sins – greed, immorality, atheism – and then calmly insist “I will protect you from the Collapse, but you must give yourself over fully.” This blend of doom and hope made his speeches both terrifying and strangely reassuring to listeners who felt lost. Even captured resistance fighters admitted that hearing Joseph speak face-to-face was disarming; he’d look into their eyes and talk about their personal pain or loss with uncanny empathy, then pivot to why joining him would free them from that pain. It’s cult indoctrination 101, delivered by a master orator. Every sermon bolstered the cult’s fanaticism – Joseph’s voice on the radio could spur a whole platoon of cultists to charge into gunfire fearlessly.

Thus, whenever Jacob broadcast that song over loudspeakers, his sleeper agents (unknowingly programmed) would snap and carry out violent tasks. The Junior Deputy themselves fell victim: after being Jacob’s prisoner, the Deputy would fly into a involuntary frenzy at the sound, compelled to complete a timed gauntlet and ultimately made to murder Eli Palmer under its influenc​e.

    This method was Jacob’s twisted way of “culling the herd” – using the enemy against themselves. In-universe, the Resistance came to fear that melody; hearing its opening bars echo in the pines made seasoned fighters drop to cover their ears, knowing something bad was about to happen. It turned a sweet 1950s love song into a weapon of horror. Jacob essentially proved Pavlovian conditioning could create Manchurian candidates.

43. #43Prepper Stashes

    Hope County had a long history of doomsday preppers and that only intensified under Eden’s Gate. The landscape is riddled with bunkers and caches stockpiled with food, weapons, and supplies for “the Collapse.” Many locals, even those not in the cult, built hidden stashes – fallout shelters under their backyards, caves sealed off with secret codes, etc. During the cult’s rise, Joseph either co-opted or destroyed independent bunkers (he gave people a choice: join his Project and share your bunker, or be deemed a heretic and lose it). As a result, the cult greatly bolstered its armory by absorbing these prepper stashes. For the Resistance and Deputy, these same bunkers became treasure troves – numerous times, they located a prepper hatch (marked often by a yellow paint splash or a note) and accessed it to find much-needed ammo or gear. In-world, people spread rumors like “I hear old man Briar’s bunker by the river still has a working generator and medical kits.” Such tips were gold for those surviving off the land.

    Mechanics of Bunker Life: Inside these bunkers, whether cult or independent, you’d find hydroponic gardens, stockpiles of MREs (meal rations), water filtration systems, and of course, weapons caches. One ubiquitous item was the prepper code lock – many stashes had puzzles or requirements to open (to keep out uninitiated). In lore, a prepper might rig their bunker door to only open if you shoot a hidden switch, or only during a certain time of day, etc., to ensure privacy. These quirks became local legends. The Resistance ended up publishing a makeshift “Survival Guide” listing known bunker locations and how to access them, effectively turning Eden’s Gate’s own prep into a scavenger hunt for freedom fighters.

44. #44Cult Bunkers

    Eden’s Gate itself constructed large bunkers, especially at key compounds. Each Herald oversaw a major bunker: John had an underground silo complex where he imprisoned and “atoned” sinners (when the Deputy raided it to rescue Hudson, they found rows of cells and torture chambers – a literal hell beneath the farmlands). Jacob utilized an old Cold War missile bunker high in the Whitetails (the cult converted it into an ammunition depot and training facility; that bunker later served as a refuge for Whitetail militia after Jacob’s fall). Faith’s region featured hidden catacombs beneath the broken Joseph statue and at an abandoned brewery – these acted as chemical labs for Bliss. And at Joseph’s island, there’s a central bunker system (including Dutch’s bunker, later used by Joseph). The cult taught its followers that these bunkers were “arks” – sanctuaries for the worthy when Collapse comes. Many civilians were forcibly herded into some cult bunkers “for their protection,” which often meant imprisonment.

    Dutch’s bunker on Dutch’s Island, which started as one man’s paranoid shelter, ended up housing the Deputy and Joseph Seed in the final moments of the Collapse. Dutch had everything: radio equipment (through which he guided the Deputy initially), CCTV monitors watching cult roadblocks, and a personal journal chronicling the slow invasion of Hope County.
