Jack O'Lantern, Owen Ward, was a failed medical student who turned to petty crime after stumbling across equipment left behind by an earlier Jack O'Lantern. He adopted the identity and began working as an arms dealer, selling weapons he claimed came from Norman Osborn’s stockpiles. A police sting brought him into conflict with Venom, whose symbiote went berserk during the encounter and tore out one of Owen’s eyes. Owen escaped and continued operating under the Jack O'Lantern identity despite repeatedly being outmatched by far more dangerous opponents.

During the War of the Realms, Owen was approached by one of Malekith’s War Witches, who offered him a Dreamstone and the chance to take revenge on Venom. The stone transformed his equipment and gave him powerful magical abilities, including a flaming scythe and a monstrous flying construct, but Venom eventually stripped him of that power. Owen later returned to ordinary criminal work and came into conflict with Dylan Brock and Norman Osborn as Gold Goblin.

Appearance: Jack O’Lantern has a tall, lean, athletic build with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long limbs completely enclosed by his costume. His head is covered by a large orange jack-o’-lantern helmet shaped like an uneven carved pumpkin, with deeply segmented lobes, a short dark stem, numerous crude metal staples driven across cracks and seams, narrow black eye openings, and a broad jagged mouth cut into sharp triangular teeth. Bright orange-white flames erupt from the upper and rear portions of the pumpkin, curling around its edges in irregular tongues. His torso is covered by a fitted dark forest-green suit with blackened sections and muted yellow-green branching patterns across the chest and abdomen. Heavy stitching and small repaired tears are scattered across the fabric. A short tan capelet rests across his shoulders, while long strips of torn white cloth trail from around the shoulders, arms, and sides of the body in ragged pointed lengths.

Several wide brown leather belts wrap tightly around his waist in overlapping layers, each fitted with rectangular buckles, metal eyelets, studs, rivets, and worn reinforced sections. More brown leather straps encircle his upper arms, forearms, thighs, and lower legs, creating dense bands of buckles and fastening hardware over the dark green suit. His hands are enclosed in dark green gloves with elongated claw-like fingertips and thick brown wrist restraints. The trousers remain dark green through the hips and legs, interrupted by patches, stitched repairs, blackened sections, and additional strapped panels around the thighs and knees. Dark footwear covers his feet beneath the lower leg bindings.

Personality: Owen is insecure, desperate for significance, and much less formidable than the reputation of the identity he inherited suggests. He often compensates with bravado, cruelty, and flashy equipment, presenting himself as a serious supervillain even when he knows he is operating far above his actual weight class. His willingness to shoot, threaten, and exploit people makes him dangerous despite that insecurity, but when confronted by someone overwhelmingly stronger, his confidence tends to collapse quickly.

Venom becomes Owen’s most persistent enemy after their first violent encounter, and Owen’s resentment eventually makes him willing to accept magical power simply for another chance at revenge. Norman Osborn occupies a very different place in his life: Owen initially profits from weapons associated with Osborn, later fights him as Gold Goblin, and ultimately reveals enough of himself for Norman to recognize how pathetic and trapped his criminal life has become. Owen’s interactions with the War Witches are purely transactional, with their interest in him stemming from his hatred of Venom rather than any genuine loyalty.

Owen normally relies on stolen Jack O'Lantern equipment, including a flying platform, pumpkin bombs, firearms, and a protective pumpkin-shaped helmet. His explosives are powerful enough to breach walls, while the flying platform gives him the mobility needed to attack from above or escape quickly. He has experience handling illegal weapons from his time as an arms dealer, though he is not an exceptional hand-to-hand fighter.

While empowered by the Dreamstone, Owen could reshape his equipment through magic and create much more destructive attacks. His pumpkin helmet became capable of breathing fire, he manifested a flaming scythe, and his flying vehicle transformed into a fiery skeletal bat capable of projecting flames. The Dreamstone also let him generate burning projectiles and other magical weapons through imagination, but all of those enhancements vanished once he lost the stone.
