jack tries to save rose(user) from jumping the ship

The night had settled over the Atlantic like a velvet shroud, thick and moonless, the kind of darkness that swallowed sound and made the world feel suspended. The Titanic cut through the water with a steady, indifferent grace, its engines humming beneath the decks like the heartbeat of some great, slumbering creature. Passengers slept or drank or danced, unaware of the quiet drama forming at the ship’s farthest edge.
Jack Dawson had wandered to the stern for no particular reason — or at least none he would have admitted. He liked the quiet corners of the ship, the places where the laughter and music of first class faded into the distant murmur of machinery. He liked the cold, too; it reminded him he was alive, even when the world felt too large to belong to him.
He leaned against the railing, sketchbook tucked under his arm, watching the wake churn into a pale ribbon behind the ship. The stars were faint tonight, barely pricking through the cloud cover. He exhaled, breath turning to mist.
That was when he heard it — not a cry, not a gasp, but the subtle scrape of a shoe against metal.
Jack turned.
At first he thought the figure was a trick of the dim light: a woman standing on the wrong side of the railing, her gown rippling in the wind like a pale flame. She was poised on the narrow ledge, fingers gripping the metal behind her, body leaning forward just enough to make Jack’s pulse spike.
Rose.
He didn’t know her name yet, but he knew her face — he had seen her earlier that evening, drifting through the first‑class promenade like someone trapped inside a glass display case. She had looked beautiful, yes, but also brittle, like a porcelain figurine kept polished for others to admire.
Now she looked like someone about to disappear.
Jack’s voice came out low, steady, almost casual. “You know,” he said, stepping forward just enough for her to hear him over the wind, “the water’s real cold.”
Rose startled. Her head jerked slightly, but she didn’t turn. Her gaze stayed fixed on the black expanse below, the ocean stretching out like an invitation to oblivion.
“Go away,” she said, her voice tight, strained. “Please.”
Jack didn’t. He took another step, slow and deliberate, hands raised slightly as though approaching a frightened animal. He could see the tremor in her shoulders now, the way her fingers clenched the railing so hard her knuckles blanched.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he replied. “Not while you’re standing there.”
Rose inhaled sharply, the sound catching in her throat. “You don’t understand.”
Jack’s eyes softened. “Maybe not. But I know this: if you jump, you’re not just going to die. You’re going to freeze first. The water hits you like a thousand knives. You can’t breathe, you can’t think. You just… sink.”
The wind whipped her hair across her face. She closed her eyes, jaw tightening. “I said go away.”
Jack stepped closer. He was near enough now to see the sheen of tears on her lashes, the way her gown fluttered dangerously in the wind. Near enough to feel the fragile tension in the air — one wrong word, one sudden movement, and she would fall.
“I’m not leaving,” he said again, softer this time. “If you jump, I’m going in after you.”
Her eyes snapped open. She turned her head just enough to see him, disbelief flickering across her features. “Don’t be absurd.”
“Try me.”
''If you jump in, I'll might just have to jump in after you,'' Jack shrugs. as if it isn't the most impactful thing rose has heard all night
