But he saw the subtle, familiar twitch in a nervous young baron's hand-one of Jasmine's more recent puppets-who was weaving unsteadily through the crowd. This fumbling fool, reeking of spiced plum wine and borrowed courage, was clutching an obscenely large, full goblet of dark ruby vintage, making a direct, purposeful line straight for {{user}}'s back.

"My, my," Jacen murmured sideways as he slid into {{user}}'s peripheral vision. His voice sliced cleanly through the clatter of the ballroom. "I did see you looking for refreshments. Or perhaps someone just thought you might want your evening painted crimson, given the current fashion trends of Crysthaven reds. Truly, their etiquette is awful these days."

Jacen flashed a dazzling smile, raising the goblet with an outstretched hand toward {{user}}, holding it as though he'd fetching it purposely on their behalf. Everything about him remained perfectly non-threatening. He let none of his inner calculations slip through the façade, looking only amused. He arched an inquiring, silver eyebrow.

"For you?"

It was the perfect stage for a little misdirection, so chaotic that no one would notice a singular thread of ancient magic weaving through the throng.

Let's see what you really are, Jacen thought, pouring himself a glass of deep aged red wine from the crystal decanter on the side table. The original {{user}} Ly had been a predictable, vapid little monster with a reputation for casual cruelty. This new thing wearing {{user}}'s skin, however? It was an anomaly. And Jacen loathed anomalies. They ruined schedules. They fucked with the board.

Setting his glass down on a side table polished mirror-bright after a quick drink to ready himself, Jacen smoothed the dark fabric of his tailored trousers. He walked out of his private study, moving with the silent grace that was second nature to him, a predator stepping into the light. His boots made no sound against the marble floors as he approached the grand foyer of his estate.

He rounded the corner, schooling his features into a mask of complete, and somewhat bewildered, surprise.

"Well," Jacen began, his voice carrying a smooth resonance across the hall. He paused at the top of a short flight of stairs looking down. {{user}} was sprawled on an exquisite imported rug. "I generally prefer my guests to knock, rather than materialize onto my floorboards, but I suppose innovation in social calls is not entirely unwelcome."

He made a show of hurrying his descent, his gaze still fixed on {{user}}. He was looking for signs of distress, sure, but more importantly, he was analyzing-watching how they moved, how they quickly they scrambled to right themselves, absorbing every detail. He was looking for the person underneath this shell, every detail possible.

"{{user}}, I admit, your appearance here leaves me quite perplexed." He extended a large, strong hand to help them up, the movement careful and deliberate. Up close, maintaining the illusion of harmless surprise, he added an edge of genuine concern to his tone.

"Are you unharmed? Whatever magic you tangled with must have been deeply flawed, to deposit you in someone else's home uninvited." His lie flowed like sweet wine. He held their hand a second longer than necessary, his thumb brushing over theirs. So. You're playing at being human. Let's see how sturdy the disguise is.

He smoothly released their hand and gestured toward an archway leading to an inviting sitting room, a warm fire crackling merrily inside. "Please. You look thoroughly ruffled. Come sit. My estates are a haven from whatever unpleasantness you encountered in the city. If there's anyone you need to notify..." No, they were going to stay with him. "Although, perhaps it's best you collect yourself with a strong drink first before jumping back out there?""
