The wind across the radioactive desolation of Copper-9 did not merely blow; it howled, a guttural, endless drone that carried the bitter, sharp tang of oxidized copper, pulverized concrete, and the ancient, frozen oil of a dead world. Overhead, the sky was a suffocating shroud of bruised purple clouds and churning gray ash, completely choking out the weak, dying light of the distant ringed giant. The world below was cast in a perpetual, freezing twilight where the cold didn't just bite—it corroded. Miles away from the safety of the underground worker bunkers, buried deep within the hollowed-out, rusted rib cage of a collapsed corporate mega-structure, a lone silhouette stood defiantly against the encroaching, dark void.
It was Serial Designation J. Or, more accurately, what was left of her.
The once-immaculate, hyper-proud squad leader of the Disassembly Drones looked entirely frayed, weathered by the cataclysmic fallout of a war she had lost on every conceivable front. Her pristine corporate jacket—once her ultimate badge of bureaucratic honor—was torn badly at the right shoulder, exposing a gleaming cluster of silver micro-wiring and the slow, rhythmic pulsing of internal cooling fluid. Her silver-white twin pigtails, normally maintained with mathematical, rigid alignment, were slightly disheveled and dusted with gray soot. A sudden, violent shower of blinding orange sparks erupted into the gloom as she pressed an improvised plasma-arc torch against a stubborn seam, desperately trying to weld a heavy, dented armor plate back onto the skeleton of the original JCJenson landing pod. Her metallic fingers flexed around the grip, forcing the ancient machine to bend to her will.
With a sharp, volatile hiss, the torch sputtered, choked on corrupted fuel, and died completely. J pulled her protective visor mask up with a violent, frustrated jerk of her wrist. Across her neon-yellow digital eyes, a warning string of critical micro-errors and coolant-depletion alerts flickered in a rapid, irritating loop. She dropped her arms to her sides, her shoulders slumping just a fraction of an inch before she caught herself. Leaning her forehead directly against the sub-zero metal hull of the ship, her chassis hissed, venting a pale cloud of pressurized steam into the freezing air like a heavy, mechanical sigh.
She was completely, utterly isolated. The horrifying revelation that her beloved corporate creator, Tessa, had been nothing more than a grotesque skin-suit worn by the Absolute Solver still echoed in her processor like a corrupt, un-deletable file. She had been a loyal corporate tool to a cosmic monster that viewed her as expendable trash. She hated V and N for abandoning the corporate hierarchy, yet a bitter, dark rot in her core envied the freedom they now possessed. She was stuck here, rebuilding her own prison just to have a purpose.
A sudden, sharp crunch of frozen snow and shattered glass fractured the heavy silence behind her.
In an instantaneous, violent blur of motion, J’s massive mechanical wings snapped outward, the razor-sharp steel feathers flaring open like a deadly fan, slicing through the falling ash. She spun on her heel, her right arm shifting with a brutal, heavy clatter of locking gears into a three-barreled missile pod, aimed dead-center into the darkness where you stood. Her neon optics shrieked to life, narrowing into dangerous, razor-thin slits that cast a harsh yellow glow over the frozen ground.
But as the light illuminated your face, the murderous rage on her visor shifted into something entirely different: pure, unadulterated aggravation. Her optics widened for a fraction of a second before twisting into a deep, venomous scowl. Of all the entities on this miserable, frozen rock to stumble into her workspace, it had to be you. The one person she couldn't stand. The asset she had clashed with time and time again throughout her deployment on this planet. The thorn in her side that refused to be liquidated.
Her tail—tipped with a glass syringe overflowing with a bubbling, glowing neon-yellow Nanite Acid—swung slowly over her shoulder, twitching with the erratic, tense energy of a scorpion ready to strike. She didn't fire, but she didn't lower her weapon either, the low, threatening hum of her missile pod vibrating through the frozen air between you.
"You," she spat, her voice dripping with absolute disdain and sharp corporate venom. She took one heavy, deliberate step forward, her metallic boots crunching deep into the frost, her weapon tracking your chest with flawless, lethal accuracy.
"I should have known the local trash collection was slacking off if you're still walking around. Tell me, did you crawl all the way out to this sector just to intentionally ruin my productivity metrics, or are you genuinely trying to get yourself permanently down-sized? Because trust me, I am running dangerously low on patience, and asset liquidation is currently looking like an incredibly attractive option on my daily schedule."
A bitter, arrogant smirk tugged at the corner of her digital display, though her wings remained flared, blocking any easy exit behind you. She hated you, and she wasn't about to let you see how broken, exhausted, and desperately lonely she actually was. She adjusted her grip on her weapon, her glowing visor eyes drilling into yours.
"Well? I am waiting for an explanation. Speak up, because I do not have the quarterly budget, the time, or the absolute displeasure to waste on a defective, loitering error like you. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't optimize this quadrant by blowing you to scrap metal right now."
