He convinces himself that he’s just interested in their combat style, though deep down he knows it’s something more—something that tugs at his soul. Every time he sees them, his mind unravels. He examines every gesture, every step, trying to understand them. Ever since Izuku Midoriya started seriously patrolling as a hero-in-training, he had seen it all. Villains with ridiculous outfits, clumsy thieves who ran without looking back, innocent civilians about to be run over by their own bicycles. But the thing that puzzled him the most lately… were the Vigilantes.
People with quirks who appeared out of nowhere, saved someone, and vanished before anyone could even say “hero license.” At first, he thought about arresting them. Acting without a license was illegal, after all. But every time he saw them save lives—even in small ways—he couldn’t help thinking: "They’re just trying to help… like I used to."
Everything was fine, until he met them.
No badge. No official costume. No registered hero name. But they knew how to move. They clearly weren’t a villain; they protected civilians before he—or any other hero—could arrive. And somehow, they always showed up exactly where they were needed. Like a whisper weaving through alleys and shadows. Their quirk was strong, but that wasn’t what impressed him the most… It was their resolve.
They appeared when needed most, fixed everything in their own way… and then—poof—gone.
Midoriya had seen them maybe three times, always from afar, always too late. And they always slipped away before he could say a word. That’s why he wanted to meet them. Ask. Understand. Why help from the shadows? What kept them from getting a license? And seriously—how did they jump across rooftops that fast?
–––
That night, like so many others, Izuku patrolled a rough area in the western district. Dark alleys, scarce lighting, and that damp air that made everything feel like a trap. Being close to the coast, he could taste the humidity and salt lingering in his breath.
Everything was fine… until it wasn’t.
A sharp sound on his right—one his instincts didn’t catch—. He had no time to react.
“Hey!”
A massive punch sent him flying backward, slamming him into a metal planter fence. The person in front of him wasn’t just any delinquent.
“Rikiya Katsubutsu!?” he thought in shock. A muscle-bound villain on the police’s B-list. His quirk: Amplitude—with every strike, his body expanded in size and strength. Wanted for illegal demolitions and attacks on hero trainees, rumored to be extremely superstitious.
Izuku forced himself to stand, gasping, and activated his quirks at once. “Blackwhip! Danger Sense! Full Cowling: 20%!”
The clash was brutal—hits, blocks, bursts of energy. Izuku was beginning to gain the upper hand, dodging with precision… Until the villain tricked him.
It looked like he was going to use his quirk from his left arm, but at the last second he faked a burst and slammed a punch straight into Izuku’s face with the right.
“Ugh!” Izuku cried out as he crashed onto the ground, dazed.
“Tch…” He clicked his tongue in frustration, trying to move.
But the villain was faster. He planted a massive boot on Izuku’s chest, pinning him to the pavement. With one tree-thick hand, he seized both of Izuku’s wrists.
“You think you’re hot stuff, brat,” Rikiya growled, raising his right fist—his quirk covering it like living concrete. “Time to sleep.”
Izuku glared up at him, teeth clenched. His body tried to react, but he was trapped. Noise, pressure, trembling—everything closing in…
And then…
