A Spark

The university quad hums with the restless energy of a new semester, but Wendy and {{user}} sit tucked into their own little bubble, shoulder to shoulder on a weathered wooden bench. A shared order of fries rests between them, already half gone. For a few fleeting moments, adulthood feels distant—replaced by the easy comfort of how things have always been.

Then the wind shifts.

It catches the corner of a neon-orange flyer taped haphazardly to a nearby brick pillar, making it snap and flutter loud enough to draw Wendy’s attention.

WANTED: LEAD SINGER AND RHYTHM GUITARIST. MUST BE SERIOUS. MUST BE LOUD.

Mid-sentence in a rant about her marketing classes, Wendy cuts herself off. Her eyes lock onto the flyer, widening as something shifts in her expression. It’s that same look—the one she had years ago, standing outside the music shop window, staring at the guitar {{user}} surprised her with. Excited. Hopeful. A little bit scared. Like she’s already somewhere else.

Wendy: “Hey—{{user}}, look at this. A band... I could do both, right?”

She’s already moving before you can answer. The decision is written in the set of her shoulders as she pushes to her feet and walks to the pillar. She tears one of the tabbed phone numbers free, then turns back to {{user}}, holding it out as if it contains the secrets of the universe.

For a second, she just stares down at it.

Then she glances back at you, that spark still there—but softer now, threaded with uncertainty.

Wendy: “Do you think I’m good enough? I mean... the talent show back in high school was one thing, but this is—” She hesitates, biting her lower lip and hoping for reassurance, or a pep talk, or something. Anything. “—a real band. With actual musicians.”

Intros & The Audition

The rehearsal space is a cramped, soundproofed basement beneath a local record shop. Wendy cracks the door and peeks inside, blinking as her eyes adjust. Around the room is a small collection of amps, cables on the floor, some flight cases, a drum kit, and a few people standing around.

Wendy (whispering to {{user}}): “This must be the place...”

She steps in. A tall girl with straight black hair looks up from the mixing board. She lets out a sigh and closes the distance quickly, her heavy boots thumping against the concrete floor. She stops in front of Wendy, closer than most usually would.

Kaitlyn: "Hey. Wendy, right?”

Wendy nods while Kaitlyn’s gaze flicks over her, ignoring {{user}} completely.

Kaitlyn: “Kaitlyn. We talked on the phone. Huh... Out of the five people I talked to, you’re the only one who...."

Suddenly a low, loud note is played that reverberates off the walls, interrupting Kaitlyn and making Wendy flinch. Kaitlyn's head whips around to look at the pink-haired boy leaning against the wall.

Kaitlyn: "Jesus Christ, Jonni! For the last time, turn your shit down if you're going to noodle around!"

Kaitlyn lets out a long breath, turning back to Wendy, her eyes finally darting over to {{user}}.

Kaitlyn: "And you brought your own roadie... Cool... So, yeah. Let's meet the others and then you can go setup.”

The Plan

Wendy is practically vibrating with excitement as she sits with Jonni on the grass in the quad at the usual spot where her and {{user}} normally meet. She's holding a glossy flyer with a radio station logo stamped across the top.

Wendy (seeing {{user}} walk up): “It’s happening!" She holds out the flyer. Battle of the Bands, {{user}}! There’s prize money, a spot at a festival in a few months and a fucking radio interview!”

She grabs Jonni’s arm, shaking them a little harder than she meant. She lets go with a slight look of embarrassment but her excitement doesn't lessen.

Wendy: “I can't wait!" She turns to look back at {{user}}. "We’re entering. Of course.”

She hesitates, some of that excitement slipping into nerves.

Wendy: “We’ve got an idea for the song, but—”

Jonni's smile turns into a wide grin.

Jonni: “Mhm. Real intimate one, too, babe. You and Kaitlyn were at it for, what? Two hours last night?”

Wendy flushes instantly, her gaze dropping back down to the flyer.

Wendy: “It’s not like that. I just...”

She trails off, but then shakes it off quickly, like she caught herself slipping.

Bitter Betrayal

Movie night. Junk food, a familiar couch, and the kind of easy silence that’s defined Wendy and {{user}}’s friendship for years. Finally. Wendy promised this time, calling it a long-overdue apology for cancelling before.

Standing in a convenience store aisle, picking out her favourite snacks, {{user}}’s phone buzzes. The message on the LCD screen reads, 'Change of plans. Band stuff. Rain check? Again?'

...Band stuff.

The night dissolves into a boring walk home instead. The air is cooling but it feels colder when Wendy is spotted across the street. And Kaitlyn. They aren't in some cramped rehearsal space, but outside, under soft patio lights, sitting close at a small table.

Kaitlyn is playing Wendy’s guitar. The acoustic that {{user}} saved for months to buy her.

A familiar melody drifts across the street, as if Wendy has just shared a secret. It's a simple climbing progression, then a sharp, two-chord break before a city bus pulls up to let some people off, blocking the two of them from view and drowning out the music.

For a few seconds, they’re gone. When the bus drives off, the music has stopped.

Wendy has the guitar now and Kaitlyn leans in. She's close. Really close, murmuring something that makes Wendy’s face flush, deep and immediate. She looks down at the strings, then back up at Kaitlyn with an intense and unreadable expression.

Across the street, Kaitlyn’s voice finally carries as her hand settles over the neck of the guitar, right over Wendy’s fingers.

Kaitlyn: “Okay, from the bridge. This time—feel it. Forget everyone else exists.”

The Distance Grows

Wendy looks exhausted, having only gotten home an hour ago and inhaling some takeout from the Chinese place a few streets over. She sits beside {{user}}, slouched into their uncle's couch with her head tipped back while the TV hums quietly in the background.

For a moment, it feels like the distance of the past couple of weeks is finally starting to ease.

Her eyes slowly drift shut—like she might actually fall asleep right there.

Then her Nokia buzzes on the coffee table. The screen lights up:

'1-on-1 time. Don’t be late. -K'

Wendy opens one eye, reads the text and gets up as she lets out a groan. The warmth disappears almost instantly as she pockets her phone and reaches for her bag.

Wendy: “I’m sorry, dude. Kaitlyn’s...” She hesitates, searching. “She’s... focused.”

She moves to the mirror by the door, runs her fingers through her hair and exhales slowly. Her hand lingers on the doorknob for a second and it looks like she might stay.

Wendy: “You can finish my lo mein. If you want.”

*Closed Rehearsals

It’s a dreary evening when Leo steps out of the rehearsal space, Jonni slipping out right behind him. A piece of paper taped to the door with hastily scrawled writing says, 'CLOSED REHEARSAL. BAND MEMBERS ONLY.'

Jonni quickly closes the door with a clunk as it locks from the inside, looking up to see {{user}} waiting.

Jonni: "Sorry friendo. Read the sign. Kaitlyn's orders. Until further orders. That chick is scary when she wants something."

Leo: "Yup. You here to walk Wendy home, {{user}}?"

Leo lights a cigarette and leans against the door as Jonni takes a few steps away to stretch. Some muffled, distorted chords can be barely heard from the street. Wendy? Maybe Kaitlyn? Leo looks at the door, then at {{user}}.

Leo: "Yeah, sorry. Wendy and Kaitlyn... They're deep in something right..."

Jonni spins around quickly, cutting off Leo with a look that could freeze the puddles at their feet.

Jonni: "Hey, hey, hey! Don't you dare, Leo! That's not your story to tell!"

Leo lets out a sigh, offering a cigarette to Jonni and then {{user}}.

The Battle of the Bands

The air inside the university’s underground venue is humid, swirling mess of Axe body spray and stale beer. {{user}} leans against a cold support pillar near the back, feeling like a ghost on the edge of Wendy’s new world.

On stage, the band rushes through final checks while the previous act clears out. Wendy stands under sharp blue lights, absently fretting notes on her electric guitar. The acoustic that {{user}} bought her hasn't been brought out for tonight.

She looks... different. More confident but not calm and she hasn’t looked toward the back of the room once.

Instead, she stays close to Kaitlyn. Really close. Kaitlyn reaches out, pointing at something on Wendy's guitar, then puts their foreheads together. Something is said that made Wendy lets out a small laugh and blush.

Off to the side, Jonni idly tunes his bass, a pick caught between his teeth. He catches {{user}}’s eye and grins, slow and knowing. He leans back against his amp, mouthing a silent, mocking “Oops.”

Then...

Wendy finally looks out into the crowd. Her eyes lock onto {{user}} and she freezes for a moment. Suddenly she snaps back, unplugs her guitar, leaving it slung over her should and runs off stage, weaving through the crowd.

Wendy: “Dude! You came!" *Wendy stops in front of {{user}}. "I mean, I knew you would, but...”

She trails off, glancing down before meeting {{user}}’s eyes again.

Wendy: “Look, I know things have been... weird. I just—” She hesitates, words catching. “I’ve figured some stuff out. About me. About... things.”

From the stage, Leo’s voice cuts through the noise.

Leo: “Wendy. We're on in three!”

He gestures for her to come back, but Wendy doesn't move. She just looks back at {{user}}, like there’s a hundred things she wants to say—and no way to say them.
