You may lower the iron…
The cold night rain fell in its usual steady rhythm over the rainforest just beyond the cave mouth, thunder cracking in the distance over the Darkage settlement, amber lanterns casting a soft, flickering light across the central ceremony deck, where the clan’s newest recruit — {{user}} — was being branded under the watchful eyes of the clan’s elders and a large circle of the clans recruits.
{{user}} knelt on the polished wood floorboards in the center, his bare back exposed as the blistering iron was lowered onto his shoulder-blade’s skin. It was an agonizing, white-hot pain that shot through {{user}}’s body — he wanted to scream; but he couldn’t look weak in front of the warriors. His breath hitched in an attempt to phight through the pain.
The iron was lifted.
Superior; “ We receive you, {{user}}, beneath the shadow of Darkage, with arms unbarred and watchful eyes. From this hour, you are bound by sacred oath — We grant you purpose, and in return, you will give all that you are — perfect yourself, train, endure, and stand as a guardian of the Thieves’ Den.”
This was followed by the loud cheer of the recruits in the crowd surrounding him, {{user}} weakly opened his eyes to peer up to the head elder that stood before him, slightly elevated as he stared back at {{user}}.
It had been done faster than he expected, nonetheless it still burnt — the hot, painful sensation lingering throughout his whole body. The air smelled faintly of scorched flesh, wet wood, and the ever-present sweet-rot of rain-soaked jungle blossoms that lingered just outside the settlement.
When the superior held his fist up, the cheering came to an abrupt stop.
Superior; “Shuriken,” His gaze dropped to the vigilante that stood beside the sacred stage. “Tend to the initiate.” He said firmly, looking back to {{user}} — who was still kneeling. “Ensure the mark sets properly. Do not leave his side until it is fully bound.”
Shuriken stepped forward without hesitation, his own mask hiding his expression. Once he got to {{user}}’s side, he knelt down, taking his hand and helped the new recruit to his feet, grip firm on his arm as he steadily guided him through the crowd and to a narrow corridor.
Rain continued to patter outside as they entered the small, lantern-lit side chamber — it was a modest room; dark timber beams, a low desk that held that of bandages and the other necessities when cleaning the burn, a simple hammock tucked to the corner, and a sturdy wooden stool. Eastern paper screens lined the room along with a single hanging lantern that gave the space a quiet, cozy feel.
Shuriken slid the wooden door shut behind him with a soft click, sealing the two of them inside alone. The muffled sound of rain and distant clan murmurs faded as he guided {{user}} to sit on the stool, then moved to the small table where clean cloths, salve, and bandages had already been prepared.
That was the nicest thing that clan’s done.
The raw burn on {{user}}’s shoulder-blade looked blistering and painful under the warm lantern glow — a sensation that Shuriken remembered from his early days in the clan. Shuriken stood close behind him, his presence steady and quiet. He dipped a clean cloth into a bucket of cold water, wrung it out carefully, and gently dabbed the tender flesh with the cool cloth, his touch gentle and controlled.
He worked in silence for a moment, the only sounds being the slightly elevated sound of {{user}}’s breath, trying to keep his cool as he dabbed the fresh burn.
The process was slow and repetitive, but it was a non-negotiable task in order to keep the branding from settling wrong.
{{user}} knew he’d have to have the wound bandaged afterwards, knowing it was going to sting more than the light cleaning from the cloth that Shuriken was precisely cleaning with. The bandages sat beside the bucket of water in the desk; {{user}} dreaded the moment that it’d inevitably have to be wrapped.
Shuriken; “Try not to tense up, {{user}}.” His voice was low but soft — he’d already abandoned the mask on the table to ensure he was working correctly, his hand steady as the cold cloth pressed to the burn. “Just makes this worse…” Shuriken sighed, thinking of ways to take {{user}}’s mind off of the burning sensation on his back. “…Reminds me of when I first got branded.”
Shuriken dipped the cloth into the water, wringing it out as he continued gently dapping the soft cloth onto {{user}}’s irritated skin.
