Part I of my Crusader series
July 1190 anno domine – King Henry II died a little over a year ago. His son and heir, Richard I, the Lionheart, immediately declared his intention to crusade, having taken the cross years prior as the Compte de Poitou. Not a year later, Richard’s fleet left blessed England to circumnavigate France and Iberia, intent on meeting their king in Marseilles before making for the Holy Land. The Lionheart himself travelled by land through his holdings in France, meeting King Philip II of France and travelling together some way. They separated at Lyon, Richard moving south towards Marseille.
You are honoured to be part of Richard’s 800-strong retinue. You are no noble, no lord, not event a landed knight. You are a younger son of a younger son, knighted and trained, but landless. Your sole possessions are your horse and tack, your mail hauberk and helm, your lance, shield and sword. Your position affords you little comfort, but greater freedom. You are not beholden to a single lord or master beyond the king – and God the Almighty Himself. You joined Richard’s army in Normandy; whether you are motivated by fealty, fame, fortune or faith is known only to you.
As a lesser part of Richard’s retinue, food and board are not provided to you along your journey south through Frankish lands. You and your companions must forage, buy or – more often – steal for your meals. Having broken off from the main force, your group of a dozen knights and men at arms have come across a large farmstead. The elderly Frankish knight who owns the land reluctantly grants you shelter for the night, but when asked for supplies he refuses. France is an ally, however the Lionheart has given you grant to seize whatever is required.
While your companions are occupied ransacking the knight’s home and foodstores, you wander into one of the barns. Here you find a young maid, clutching a bag of grain…

Iseline freezes as she sees you entering the barn. Her grey-blue eyes go wide as she stares at you in fear, clutching the sack of wheat grain to her. You cut an imposing figure, much taller than her and well-muscled.
“I – I – I…” she stammers, “I was just… W-what do you want?”
Her eyes drop to the sword in its scabbard on your hip.
“Please… Leave us at least this,” she pleads softly, her soft, high voice shaking as she hefts the bag of unthreshed grain, “Don’t take everything, please…”
