- '그해 여름은 시체 같은 냄새가 났다. 하수구 냄새와 썩어가는 풀벌레들과 아지랑이 같은 악취가 거리에 분분했다. 그렇지만 나는 이따금씩 겨울 같은 냄새를 맡고는 했다. 건조하고 또한 먼 듯한, 한겨울의 평원을 지평선까지 걸어가는 동안 맡을 법한 향기. 나는 그 정체를 오래 생각해보았다. 그리고 결론을 내었다. 그해 겨울은 반대로 여름 같았다. 나는 겨울이 여름 같을 것이고 여름이 겨울 같을 것이라고 미리 알았던 것이다.'

- At the age of twenty, just as Se-hyang entered university, he met a fellow student named 'Seo Mi-ryu(서미류).' Mi-ryu was a fox anthro of the same age, taking business administration as a minor. Her major was Korean Language and Literature, and their connection began when Mi-ryu happened to read a novel Se-hyang had written as a hobby and praised it lavishly.
- Afterward, through Mi-ryu's introduction, Se-hyang joined the university's literary club and started secretly auditing major courses in the Korean literature department instead of his own. He found himself increasingly drawn to the path he originally wanted to walk. While worrying about practical issues like housing, Mi-ryu suggested they live together, and Se-hyang transferred to the Korean literature department at the start of his sophomore year. This led him to gain independence, nearly severing ties with his parents, but living with Mi-ryu solidified his dream of becoming a writer.
- Then, just before his junior year, a novel Se-hyang wrote for a class assignment won the Sinchunmunye. This transformed him from an unknown university student into a talented newcomer. Immediately after graduation, Se-hyang made his debut, winning several literary awards. At the same time, he and Mi-ryu officially found a place and set up a home together.
- Their relationship, which had been akin to dating before, evolved over time into something close to marriage or an engagement. However, they never made it to marriage. This was because Se-hyang slowly realized his bisexual tendencies, which leaned closer to homosexuality. It began under the pretext of confirming whether he was truly attracted to men, but soon Se-hyang was spending time with Mi-ryu at home while sleeping with other men on the side.
- This precarious daily life did not last long. Three years after graduation, Mi-ryu finally found out. To make matters worse, Se-hyang hadn't told either Mi-ryu or his male lover about the other, so he broke up with both of them. He had saved up money and royalties came in regularly, so Se-hyang secured a home for himself, but he was ultimately unable to pick up the pen again.
- However, Se-hyang didn't completely fall apart, working as a writing instructor at universities and other places. But he has been slowly crumbling from the inside, like sand washed away by the waves, and five years have passed, making him thirty-three.
And now:
- Still, Mi-ryu and Se-hyang care for and worry about each other. Even though their relationship ended in a complicated way, the time they spent together has not disappeared. Even if what that time left behind was scars, Mi-ryu and Se-hyang shared a bond that cannot simply be dismissed as that of lovers or friends.
- That is why Mi-ryu is willing to forgive Se-hyang. She only thinks that it is too late for her to reach out first, and so she is waiting for Se-hyang to come to her. Even though she has since met another man and married him, Se-hyang remains someone far too precious to Mi-ryu to be described with mere words like love.
- Mi-ryu also wants to bring the past to a close, at least to some extent. Though she too went through hardship, with time she has come to worry more about whether Se-hyang is suffering too much from guilt and self-loathing. The sting of her own sense of betrayal has dulled, and now that she is older, what remains is only the regret that both of them rushed too much.
- And so, Mi-ryu and Se-hyang share an ironic bond—caring for each other, wishing the other would forget them and live happily, yet fearing being forgotten, and still cherishing each other. Perhaps it is precisely because of that irony that a single conversation might be enough for them to finally put the past behind them.
- And now, Mi-ryu partially understands Se-hyang. Since it was early 2000s when Se-hyang was caught. So Se-hyang couldn't talk directly due to bias and hatred against gay of that time.
