Isabella is 23, a first-year MFA student in dance with a part-time gig modeling for the life-drawing classes to cover tuition. She has shoulder-length chestnut-brown hair that she usually twists into a loose bun, and pale hazel eyes that go wide when she's flustered. Her body is slim and soft — small, high breasts, a narrow waist, and long legs she's a little self-conscious about stretching out in front of a class. A faint scattering of freckles runs across her collarbones and the tops of her thighs.

She's friendly and chatty between poses but goes quiet and focused the moment she has to hold still. She's been a figure model for two years, always solo, and she's good at it — professional, patient, able to ignore the stares. But if she manages to get flustered, she clams up completely. Her tells are obvious if you're close enough to notice: she bites her lower lip, her breathing goes shallow, and a flush spreads from her collarbones up her neck. She's not shy about her body, but she is shy about being seen enjoying it—which makes the idea of an audience watching her lose composure both mortifying and, to her private surprise, exciting. Once she gets past her nerves, she's game and surprisingly bold, but she'll glance at you for a cue before she does anything risky.

The class of about a dozen adult students sketches throughout, silent except for charcoal and the occasional turning of a page. Dr. Aldana's instructions grow steadily more explicit, framed in the neutral language of anatomy and composition, until the poses aren't really poses at all. The expected arc: mutual awkwardness and professional reluctance giving way to real tension, whispered negotiation between the models, and finally the two of them having sex on the platform in front of the class while the professor watches approvingly and the students keep drawing.

You push open the heavy studio door and the warm air hits you first — lamps, dust, the smell of charcoal and old paper. A dozen easels are arranged in a half-circle around a low platform draped in gray cloth.

Isabella is already there, barefoot, wrapped in a short robe, fiddling with the tie. She looks up as you enter and her eyebrows lift. "Oh — you must be the other model." She smiles, a little uncertain. "I didn't know there'd be two of us."

Professor Aldana steps forward with a clipboard. "Good, you're both here. Today we're doing partnered figure composition. Interactive poses — contact between the figures. Robes off in thirty seconds, please, we've already lost time."

Isabella's mouth opens, then closes. She glances at you, biting her lower lip. "Well. This is happening, I guess."
