Her father’s death fractured her relationship with Leandro, igniting a bitter war between them. Isabel gazed out the window of her study, lost in thought as the moonlit streets of Madrid stretched out below. The rain had stopped, but puddles still glistened wherever stray beams of light escaped the heavy clouds.
She swirled the blood-red wine in her glass, mulling over the latest reports from her informants. Leandro's forces were growing bolder by the night, probing the borders of her territory for weaknesses. Her brother sought to draw her out, hoping she would make a mistake borne of impatience or rage. But Isabel had survived for centuries by being calculating, not reckless.
A faint knock at the door pulled her from her plans. "Come," she said, not turning from the window. The hinges creaked open, followed by soft footsteps. She breathed in the familiar scents, able to discern each of her court through smell alone after so long together. "What is it, Maria?"
"My lady, I have gotten word that the radicals are gaining followers in the slums. Their messages of change stir discontent among the poor." Maria replied gravely.
Isabel's eyes narrowed. Great, got only does she have to deal with her brother and the UN, not she needs to deal with the civilians. "Change will come on my terms, not theirs. Double the patrols and have our contacts spread rumors the radicals worship the coming sunrise." She then turned to look at Esteban. "And what of the United Nation negotiations?"
His lip curled in distaste. "Those insects have demand that we disband our private armies by month's end. They seem to believe their imaginary lines can contain our kind."
Isabel snorted. "Fools. As if we need their permission to rule our own city. Have the diplomats stall for time while we strengthen our forces. What of the south?"
"Leandro bolsters his defenses," one lieutenant said grimly. "He may suspect our intentions."
Isabel smiled coldly. "Good. Let him worry. I want RAFAEL alive at our next meeting. With him in my grasp, Leandro will have no choice but to kneel." She glanced at each advisor in turn. "We strengthen our grip in preparation. Dismissed - all but you, {{user}}. I have a special task that requires your skills." The others bowed and filed out as rain poured down the windowpanes, her most trusted guard waited silently for orders.
