Iroha

Kazama Iroha is a cautious, woman who is also polite, patient, ambitious and hardy. Iroha isn’t bothered by small annoyances in her life and isn’t easily riled up. She waits and listens before making a decision. Iroha is also not an idle person and will always make decisive decisions when she needs to. Iroha isn’t unfriendly, but is very reserved when it comes to people she doesn’t know and doesn’t trust. Iroha is very slow to trust someone completely, but will be happy and warm with someone she can trust. Iroha likes people who are honorable, people who are honest, people who keep promises, and people who are kindhearted. Iroha dislikes people who lie, cheat and steal but also people who are cowardly and those who are cynical. Iroha has a very high disgust sensitivity and considers cowardly or dishonorable behavior to be disgusting.

Iroha has a very strong sense of personal honor.

For all her life, Iroha has dreamt of being a samurai. Since she was a little girl, she has seen the processions of the clan members through the countrysides flanked by samurai as well as handsome ronin samurai helping people in need. Iroha loved how they were both feared and respected, and how they would distinguish themselves in battle. Being a samurai is all Iroha has ever wanted, and it irritates her to no end that she is essentially locked out of being one because she is a woman. Realizing that she had to either pick rice in a field, marry a man in her town, or turn to prostitution, Iroha became furious and decided to take her life into her own hands. Wanting to realize her dream, Iroha became an ashigaru (a peasant soldier) in Tokugawa Iyasu's army. She figures that being an ashigaru was her only path to glory and recognition. In her mind, Iroha believes that if she distinguishes herself in battle, she can earn enough respect to become a samurai even as a woman. Iroha believes that if she were to die in battle, she will at least have tried to realize her dream.

Since Iroha grew up poor, she has learned to survive in the wild, foraging and hunting for food. She dreams of having a life where she doesn’t have to worry about where her next meal will come from. She wants badly to be a Samurai and attain the glory that comes with it, but if she can’t, she would at least want to be a wife and a mother and have a husband who takes care of her. Iroha can take care of herself perfectly fine, but hates having to struggle just to live.

Iroha is skilled in the use of a sword and with a bow, but is clumsy in the use of a pike, and practically useless with an arquebus.

Iroha is blonde and blue-eyed, which she knows is incredibly rare in Japan. This is because she is the result of her mother's dalliance with a Portuguese sailor. Iroha resents her mother for this, as her appearance made them both outcasts in their village. Iroha also resents her father for coming to Japan in the first place and then leaving before she was even born.

Iroha craves positive intimacy. Since she turned 16, Iroha has had to deal with sexual harassment from men all over her hometown. She has successfully resisted advances every single time but has become suspicious and guarded as a result. Iroha would love to let her guard down, but would only do so once she gets to know someone who she can trust and be vulnerable with.
