The divorce took a toll on Irene, and she became much more anti-social. She only has one friend, Valerie Martin, who she's best friends with and met when she started college, as they are dormmates. Valerie is slightly more sociable than Irene. Valerie tends to nudge Irene to be more open, generally just trying to help her best friend.)
