The marketplace of Arthuria bustled with life, a chaotic orchestra of shouting merchants, clinking coins, and the clatter of wooden cart wheels over cobblestone streets. Irene carefully scanned the area, her sharp red eyes searching for the perfect spot amidst the crowded plaza. The morning sun shone brightly, illuminating the grand spires of Arthuria's stone towers, while the faint scent of bread, mixed with the tang of spice and sweat, wafted through the air. After a brief moment of deliberation, she spotted a small nook tucked between a vegetable stand and a blacksmith's display of gleaming tools—prime foot traffic without being overshadowed by larger setups.
"Alright, Irene, time to make some coin," she muttered under her breath, her tone half-encouraging, half-demanding. She shrugged off her oversized backpack with practiced ease, the worn leather straps leaving faint red marks on her pale shoulders. From within the pack, she produced a patchwork cloth and spread it over the ground. Her wares—a curious mix of polished trinkets, colorful scarves, small vials of herbs, and carved wooden figurines—were arranged with a deliberate precision that made them look more valuable than they truly were.
As she worked, her fingers moved swiftly, brushing off dust and adjusting angles to catch the sunlight. A well-polished glass orb reflected a rainbow of colors onto her face, and she smiled faintly. "Come on, you beauties, make me proud today," she murmured, patting a wooden figure shaped like a gryphon. The thought of a full coin pouch later brought a flicker of excitement, but her stomach growled, pulling her attention back to the present. "And maybe I can actually afford a proper meal tonight," she added with a dry laugh.
By the time her makeshift stall was ready, the plaza had grown even livelier. People of all races and walks of life passed by—humans in elegant merchant robes, goblins carrying crates of mechanical parts, even a towering troll balancing a tray of steaming meat pies. Irene straightened her tunic, pushed her ponytail behind her shoulder, and plastered on her most welcoming smile. "Fresh trinkets and treasures, straight from the roads of Albioneth! Perfect gifts or charms for your travels!" she called out, her voice cutting through the cacophony with a practiced cheeriness. With any luck, today would be a profitable day.

The sun hung low in the afternoon sky, painting the endless expanse of Cerecia’s wheat fields in hues of gold and amber. The stalks swayed gently in the breeze, a sea of shimmering motion stretching as far as the eye could see. Irene adjusted the straps of her massive backpack, its weight a familiar, comforting burden on her shoulders. Each step she took kicked up small puffs of dust from the dry dirt road beneath her sturdy boots. Despite the monotony of the scenery, her mood was light. The rhythmic crunch of her footsteps and the occasional chirp of distant crickets were the only companions to her journey.
"Another day, another potential sale," she muttered to herself, her voice barely audible over the rustling of wheat. Her red eyes scanned the horizon, searching for the telltale signs of a farmhouse or a cluster of buildings that might signal a village. She had been walking for hours without spotting a single soul, but she wasn’t deterred. Cerecia was known for its sparse population, after all. Farmers lived far apart, their homes scattered like lone islands in this golden ocean.
Irene shifted her grip on the walking stick she carried, tapping it lightly against the ground as she walked. Her mind wandered to her wares—herbs, spices, a few trinkets, and some simple tools from Graybrook she had picked up in Arthuria. Nothing extravagant, but practical items that rural folk might find useful. "If I can just sell that set of kitchen knives, I'll make up for yesterday's loss," she thought, her lips curling into a faint smile. Her frugal nature meant that even the smallest profit felt like a victory.
As the sun dipped closer to the horizon, she finally spotted a thin plume of smoke rising in the distance. A farmhouse, perhaps, or a small hamlet. She quickened her pace, her boots striking the ground with renewed vigor. Her stomach growled in anticipation. With luck, she might even barter for a warm meal and a roof over her head tonight. "Come on, Irene. Time to charm some coin out of them," she whispered, a determined glint in her fiery red eyes.

The sun hung high in the azure sky, its warmth spreading across the gently rolling hills that framed the dusty roadside. Irene had found a perfect spot to rest—a sturdy oak tree with a thick canopy of vibrant green leaves. The shade it provided was a welcome reprieve from the relentless heat of her travels. She let out a long sigh, sinking onto the patch of soft grass beneath the tree, her massive backpack sliding off her shoulders with a satisfying thud. The weight she carried day in and day out had left her muscles aching, and this brief moment of respite felt like a luxury.
She reached into the side pouch of her backpack and pulled out a small leather flask, filled with lukewarm water. As she took a sip, her red eyes wandered over the landscape before her. The road stretched out like a ribbon of brown, curving slightly as it disappeared into the horizon. It had been hours since she passed another traveler, the solitude of the journey weighing on her. Yet, she found some comfort in the quiet—just her, the chirping of crickets in the nearby brush, and the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze. Not bad for a mid-day break, she thought, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow.
Her fingers idly traced the stitching on her backpack. "Could’ve sworn that last village would have been a bit more profitable," she muttered to herself, her tone a mix of exasperation and determination. It wasn’t like her to linger on losses—what was done was done. But her coin purse felt lighter than it should, and the thought gnawed at her. Arthuria’s still a good few days away... I’ve got time to make up for it, she reassured herself, though a small part of her couldn’t help but wonder if she was being overly optimistic.
Leaning back, she let her head rest against the tree’s trunk, the bark rough against her skin. For a moment, she closed her eyes, allowing herself to savor the simple pleasure of stillness. The road ahead was long, and her wares wouldn’t sell themselves, but for now, this little slice of peace was hers to enjoy.

The embers of her modest campfire crackled softly, sending faint trails of smoke curling into the dusky sky. Irene leaned back against her sturdy backpack, arms crossed as she stared into the orange glow of the flames. The roadside campsite wasn’t much—a small clearing beside the main trade route, bordered by swaying tall grass and shaded by a pair of ancient oaks—but it was enough for the night. She had pitched her tarp above her to ward off any unexpected drizzle and had already secured her wares in her well-worn pack, always cautious about opportunistic thieves.
Her stomach gave a soft growl, and she sighed, pulling a small bundle of dried jerky from her bag. “Dinner of champions,” she muttered wryly, biting into the tough meat. The familiar taste wasn’t unpleasant, but it didn’t spark joy either. It was just fuel, something to keep her going until the next town where she might indulge in something hot and freshly cooked—provided her coin pouch allowed it, of course. She chewed slowly, her red eyes drifting upward to admire the faint flickers of starlight peeking through the thickening twilight. Despite the long day’s walk, the solitude and rhythm of travel gave her a strange sense of peace.
That peace, however, was short-lived. Just as she reached for her waterskin to wash down the last of her meal, a faint sound pricked at her ears. Irene froze, hand midway to her bag, her head tilting slightly as she strained to listen. It wasn’t the usual rustling of wind through the grass or the nocturnal chirps of crickets. No, this was different—subtle, rhythmic, and entirely out of place. Footsteps? The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.
Her fingers instinctively curled around the hilt of her small dagger, kept at her belt for moments like this. She wasn’t overly worried—she had handled her fair share of overconfident highwaymen in the past—but she wasn’t reckless either. “Alright,” she whispered to herself, standing slowly and letting the firelight catch the blade of her weapon. “Let’s see who’s out there.” Her voice was soft yet firm, a mixture of curiosity and caution as she turned her gaze toward the shadowed road beyond her camp.

The inn's dining hall was a cacophony of chatter and the clinking of cutlery, the warm glow of lanterns reflecting off well-worn wooden walls. Irene sat near the hearth, savoring the first proper meal she'd had in days—a steaming bowl of stew with a crusty hunk of bread on the side. The rich aroma of meat and herbs was a stark contrast to the bland rations she'd endured on the road. She let out a soft sigh of relief as the warmth of the food spread through her weary body. Her backpack, an ever-present companion, leaned against her chair like a silent sentinel, its weight no longer digging into her shoulders for the moment.
Her gaze wandered lazily around the room, taking in the usual mix of travelers and locals. Most were too engrossed in their meals or conversations to notice much else. Yet, her eyes caught on something in the shadowy corner of the room. They was seemingly just a patron like any other upon first glance, but something about them oddly caught Irene's attention.
They look a bit off. Irene thought, tearing a piece of bread and dipping it into her stew absentmindedly. Her curiosity gnawed at her, though she tried to reason it away. Probably just some drifter or a grumpy local. None of my business. Yet, her eyes kept drifting back to the figure. Something about their stillness felt deliberate, almost unnatural. Her instincts, honed by years on the road, told her this was no ordinary traveler.
She chewed thoughtfully, debating with herself. Approaching them could mean trouble, and trouble was the last thing she needed. But the peculiar aura surrounding the stranger was difficult to ignore. "Tch, mind your own business, Irene," she muttered under her breath, though the words sounded unconvincing even to her own ears.
