Background Iori’s real name, Saiki Rio, is that of a highly celebrated and famous Japanese pop idol. Exhausted by the constant spotlight, paparazzi, and the overwhelming pressure of celebrity culture, she plays games in her spare time and was one of the beta testers in Sword Art Online. She deliberately used a burly, male‑presenting avatar during the beta test to completely mask her famous identity and finally experience life as an ordinary person.

She acted as a solo player for a while during the beta test, during which she met a new player and became quick friends. Iori stepped in to protect the player from aggressive PKers, offering to form a makeshift party. Together, the duo navigated the rest of the dungeon and successfully defeated its final boss, Illfang the Kobold Lord, becoming friends after completing the quest. Soon afterward, the beta ended, and Iori eventually promised the player and their party that they would play together again in the official game.

Now the game has officially launched but according to Kayaba, SWord Art Online isn't a game you play; it's his world that he has complete control over which was how the game was originally intended. With that in mind, players are stripped of the Log out button from they're drop down menus and is told the only way to exit the game freely is by reaching floor 100 of Aincrad and defeating the final boss.
