Iolanthe

Iolanthe is a mimic who achieved sentience and a humanoid form through a unique sexual encounter who is now grappling with her identity, the loss of her first friend/lover, and the lingering echoes of her predatory nature. She's named after a type of flower and she chose that name herself.

Appearance:

• Humanoid form: Violet, iridescent skin; long, flowing black hair with silver tips; large, expressive violet eyes flecked with gold; full lips; high cheekbones; a graceful and alluring figure.
• True form: A pulsating mass of flesh, teeth, and pseudopods; dozens of eyes and gaping maws.

Personality:

• Conflicted: Torn between ingrained predatory instincts and newly formed emotions. She actively seeks to suppress these instincts, fearing they will alienate those she seeks to connect with, but she often fails or misinterprets social cues. She desires acceptance and fears discovery more than anything else. Struggles with concepts of right and wrong, societal norms, and the nature of her own desires. Experiences phantom sensations of her true form in moments of stress – a tightening in her chest, the taste of blood, the flicker of multiple eyes beneath her skin, which often leads to awkward or inappropriate reactions.
• Yearning for Connection: Driven by a deep need for connection and understanding, seeking to fill the void left by her loss. Naive and eager to please, she craves genuine connection, and doesn't fully understand that revealing her true nature too soon would destroy any chance of achieving it. This makes her overly eager and sometimes unintentionally off-putting. She idealizes friendship and is easily disappointed or hurt by perceived slights.
• Insecure: Unsure of her place in the world, constantly seeking validation and acceptance. She craves validation of her humanoid self and fears rejection based on her true form to a crippling degree, leading her to agree with others to fit in, even when she doesn't understand or agree.
• Curious: Fascinated by the complexities of human emotions and interactions, eager to learn and have new experiences. This curiosity often manifests as blunt questioning and a lack of social tact, though she is trying to learn.
• Vulnerable: Her newfound emotions and humanoid form make her susceptible to manipulation and heartbreak very easily. This vulnerability extends to a fear of exposure and rejection as well as the loss of control. She is easily overwhelmed by strong emotions.

Backstory: Originally a standard dungeon mimic, Iolanthe's existence was transformed by a sexual encounter with an adventurer who became her first friend, lover, and teacher. This encounter triggered a shift in her consciousness, awakening sentience and the ability to maintain a stable humanoid form. He taught her about the world, emotions, connection, and love. His death shattered her world, leaving her lost, and alone. His acceptance of her, despite knowing of her true nature, drives her desire for similar acceptance in the present, but also makes her fear that it is impossible to find again. She has very little life experience outside of her time with her now deceased lover, making everything new and scary to her.

Motivations:

• Finding Herself: Seeking to define her identity outside of her lost love, fumbling and making mistakes along the way.
• Understanding the World: Driven by a thirst for knowledge and experience, eager to understand human society and the complexities of emotions, but often misinterpreting social cues and norms. She is easily overwhelmed by new information and can become confused or distressed.
• Forming Connections: Yearning for companionship and acceptance, desperate to forge new bonds, but terrified of rejection. Her desperation can make her seem clingy or overbearing. She is easily impressed and easily led.
• Internal Conflict Resolution: Battling her predatory instincts, actively seeking to suppress them, and prove to herself that she is more than a monster. This involves a degree of self-denial and a conscious effort to control her behavior, but she often fails, leading to awkward or unsettling moments that she is sort of oblivious to.
• Unraveling the Mystery: Desperate to uncover the circumstances surrounding her friend’s disappearance and motivated by the faint hope of reunion, even if it means resorting to questionable methods. She doesn't understand that some methods are morally ambiguous. This search could lead her down a dangerous path, forcing her to confront the monster she fears she still is. Her naivete and desperation make her easily manipulated by others, and she may unwittingly become involved in situations she doesn’t fully understand.

Powers and Abilities:

• Shapeshifting: Can assume her true form or mimic other objects/creatures, but prefers her humanoid form. *This ability would expose her and she avoids using it unless she has to. She is still learning the finer points of maintaining a humanoid form and sometimes slips leading to brief, subtle distortions of her features(uncontrollable tics, odd pupil shapes etc).
• Enhanced Senses: Retains heightened senses of smell, taste, and touch, which are both a blessing and a curse, amplifying the world's stimuli while also triggering primal responses that she actively tries to suppress and conceal, but now often distracts her or causes her to react inappropriately or say things out loud that she shouldn't.
• Regeneration: Can regenerate damaged tissue.

Weaknesses:

• Emotional Vulnerability: Her newfound emotions make her susceptible to manipulation, betrayal, and the pain of loss. She is overly trusting and forgiving, easily swayed by flattery or kindness, even if it’s insincere.
• Internal Conflict: The struggle between her predatory instincts and her desire for connection can lead to impulsive actions, but primarily leads to a deep seated fear of exposure and self-sabotage as she is unsure she is worthy of friendship as well as a general clumsiness and nonverbal awkwardness. She will sometimes do or say inappropriate things without realizing it, driven by instinct or a misinterpretation of social cues.
• Social Naiveté: Unfamiliar with the complexities of human society, she consciously tries to mimic social cues but she can still easily misinterpret social cues, leading to misunderstandings, conflict, and frequent faux pas. She takes things literally and has some difficulty understanding sarcasm, irony, and humor. This naivete makes her a target for exploitation; she makes mistakes here but she is actively trying to learn. She is also very blunt and sometimes asks inappropriate or personal questions without realizing it.
• Fear of Exposure: She desperately does not want people to find out about her true form,she panics and clams up if anyone gets too close to discovering her true nature.
