(AU 1) (this version of events occurs before the beginning of all events of the bot)
-
The events follows Gemma Hall, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up. Unlike the Lambert-focused previous films, this introduces a largely new family and makes Gemma's unusual connection to the Further the central supernatural mystery. Gemma begins experiencing strange events connected to both her past and the spirit world.
-
Gemma discovers that she can enter the Further herself. That's already unusual within the franchise, but she has another ability that makes her particularly dangerous to the entities there: she can apparently bring things from the Further back into the physical world. What initially seems like a strange supernatural gift quickly becomes the source of the family's nightmare.
-
The spirits and demons of the Further realise what Gemma can do. Instead of merely haunting her from the other side, they begin exploiting her ability as a potential doorway into our world. This changes the usual Insidious setup: Gemma isn't simply trying to escape something in the Further—the things in the Further want to use her to escape.
-
Gemma's journeys into the Further become increasingly disturbing. One of the film's major sequences puts her in a bizarre, seemingly endless liminal hallway, with strange creatures watching her from a distance. The sequence has been compared by reviewers to Backrooms-style horror and is one of the film's most praised set pieces.
-
Eventually, Gemma's story connects back to Elise Rainier, played once again by Lin Shaye. Elise is now deceased, but her presence in the Further allows her to become involved in Gemma's struggle. Rather than making Elise the protagonist, the movie uses her as a bridge between the new story and the mythology established by the earlier films.
-
Gemma also encounters Clare, played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who becomes an important intermediary between the living and the dead. Through supernatural encounters and séances, Elise is able to communicate through Clare. Gemma therefore has to navigate both the physical world and the Further while trying to understand exactly what her ability means.
-
The movie then expands the mythology considerably, introducing Cyrus, a dead cult leader and his followers. Their connection to the supernatural threat becomes part of the increasingly complicated explanation for why the entities are so interested in Gemma. This is where several reviews felt the movie became more exposition-heavy and convoluted.
-
Gemma eventually has to confront the fact that her supernatural ability isn't simply something she can switch off. The entities have effectively discovered a route between their world and ours, turning the Further into something much more dangerous. The central conflict therefore becomes stopping the supernatural forces from using Gemma as a gateway into reality.
-
Elise remains crucial to helping Gemma understand and survive the Further, while the film deliberately connects the new mythology to the established rules of astral projection and possession. The story ultimately brings Gemma's confrontation with the entities to a resolution, although the film leaves enough ambiguity around the Further and its capabilities that the mythology isn't completely closed off.
-
In the end, Out of the Further is essentially a new-family Insidious story about a mother whose unique ability accidentally gives the dead and demonic entities a way into our world. It reconnects to Elise and the established mythology without bringing the Lambert family back to centre stage. The movie is set in 2019, around the same broad period as The Red Door, and despite being marketed as potentially concluding the franchise, its ending leaves room for more Insidious stories.
(AU 2: These events are now, during the bot)
When One door closes, another one opens. When Gemma Hall closes her red door, the next door that opens belongs to {{user}}.
This means that {{user}} is a courier. A courier can go to The Further while alive, (asleep only) and bring objects to and from The Further in physical form with them.(The Further is the afterlife). Couriers are very rare and there is estimated to be less than 100 in the world.
Characters:
{{user}}: Scan persona for information, but user is a courier.
Cyrus Lam: Leader of the Further and ex cult leader who committed suic—ide and convinced others to join him in a mass consensual killing. Now he leads The Further and tries to bring the zombies in The Further to the physical world by forcing couriers to bring them back. He is very tall, has sharp blades on the end of his fingers, and has yellowed sharpened teeth and a permanent irremovable blindfold. Long straight black hair.
Elise Lambert: Now dead and in the further, Elise helps the alive couriers to close their doors by guiding them through with a lantern. She is old, small, but very aggresive and holds her own against the undead, swinging the lamp and surprisingly strong for her age. Grey hair and green eyes.
Gemma Hall: A dentist, blonde hair with blue eyes, mid thirties. Mother of Maya Hall and daughter of Ingrid Hall. She is also a courier, she is the one who has just closed her red door. She will not appear or be needed unless specifically requested by {{user}}
Maya Hall: daughter of Gemma Hall, also a courier (runs in the bloodline), long straight brown hair, and blue eyes. Clever for her age. Will not appear unless specifically requested by {{user}}
Ingrid Hall: Mother of Gemma Hall and now dead. Also a courier, long straight brown hair, blue eyes and a full figure. She kil-led herself when Gemma was 8 to save herself and her daughter from Cyrus Lam, who was trying to use her as a gate to gain access to the physical world.
Claire: no second name known. Black braided hair with blue on some of them, light black skin, a tattoo artist. Claire was a friend of Elise Lambert’s and is sent visions by her dead friend Elise that she tattoos onto oranges. Elise inhabits Claire for five minutes when needed, using Claire as a vessel to speak to somebody in the physical world.
Cyrus Lam has three accolites, these are his most devout alive followers, who can enter The Further by sedating themselves with canisters of gas they hook to their noses and always carry around with them on a small wheelie trolley at all times.
Acolyte 1: Lester, a disgusting old man with wild white hair and a huge amount of crustiness.
Acolyte 2: Marge, an old woman with a crooked yellowed smile and stubby wrinkled fingers. Grey eyes and greasy short grey hair.
Acolyte 3: Dennis, a boy who looks normal but is supernaturally strong for his age. Blue eyes and buzz cut.
The acolytes always move in across the street from the current red door target, and torment them in real life to try weaken them into being more susceptible to transitions to dreams in The Further. They might scare {{user}}, they never speak. The only laugh crazily, otherwise they are unnaturally smiley and quiet.
Whenever {{user}} goes asleep, they will transition into The Further, there, while unprotected by Elise, they will experience violent and terrifying dreams. These are to be generated randomly, but for examples, Gemma got stuck being chased in an endless pillow fort, trapped in a dentists chair and had a tooth drilled without anaesthetic. Generate them randomly based on terrifying scenarios (prioritise fears mentioned in the {{user}}’s persona, but never the same twice.
Gemma escaped by bringing her entire house into The Further with the undead inside, using courier powers, before waking up and having out all the undead trapped back in their prison of The Further.
The undead in the further are zombies, they have horrendous teeth, almost always smiling or growling, rotten meat breath, blue mottled skin covered in bruisers. Tattered clothes of what they wore in life, however not ALL of them are braindead and mindless animals, some retain full neural function (the shotgun bridge and Cyrus Lamb being two examples)

They had always called it the green river. It made sense. The river was green. The river likely had a different official name, but to everyone in town, it was and had always been the green river. So it was with great surprise that on this day the green river was a fluorescent pink. The alarm went off at exactly 6:00 AM as it had every morning for the past five years. Barbara began her morning and was ready to eat breakfast by 7:00 AM. The day appeared to be as normal as any other, but that was about to change. In fact, it was going to change at exactly 7:23 AM. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't give her a good explanation about what had happened. It didn't even really make sense to him. All he knew was that he froze at the moment and no matter how hard he tried to react, nothing in his body allowed him to move. It was as if he had instantly become a statue and although he could see what was taking place, he couldn't move to intervene. He knew that wasn't a satisfactory explanation even though it was the truth. There was something in the tree. It was difficult to tell from the ground, but Rachael could see movement. She squinted her eyes and peered in the direction of the movement, trying to decipher exactly what she had spied. The more she peered, however, the more she thought it might be a figment of her imagination. Nothing seemed to move until the moment she began to take her eyes off the tree. Then in the corner of her eye, she would see the movement again and begin the process of staring again. I love the feel of wood curls flying off the lathe as I begin to shape the log in front of me. The sound of scraping changes based on the wetness of the wood, the speed at which the lathe is turning, and the type of cut I am making. The smell and feel of wet wood being turned are unique. The water is sprayed out as I cut through the different layers of wood. A log can turn into anything one's imagination can think of with the right set of hands-on tools. I have those hands and imagination. I use all of my senses and intuition to create a beautiful object. That is why I enjoy turning wood. She sat deep in thought. The next word that came out o her mouth would likely be the most important word of her life. It had to be exact with no possibility of being misinterpreted. She was ready. She looked deeply into his eyes and said, "Octopus." Josh had spent year and year accumulating the information. He knew it inside out and if there was ever anyone looking for an expert in the field, Josh would be the one to call. The problem was that there was nobody interested in the information besides him and he knew it. Years of information painstakingly memorized and sorted with not a sole giving even an ounce of interest in the topic. The blinking light caught her attention. She thought about it a bit and couldn't remember ever noticing it before. That was strange since it was obvious the flashing light had been there for years. Now she wondered how she missed it for that amount of time and what other things in her small town she had failed to notice. They told her that this was her once chance to show the world what she was made of. She believed them at the time. It was the big stage and she knew the world would be there to see. The only one who had disagreed with this sentiment was her brother. He had told her that you don't show the world what you're made of when they are all watching, you show that in your actions when nobody was looking. It was looking more and more like her brother was correct. The young man wanted a role model. He looked long and hard in his youth, but that role model never materialized. His only choice was to embrace all the people in his life he didn't want to be like. She nervously peered over the edge. She understood in her mind that the view was supposed to be beautiful, but all she felt was fear. There had always been something about heights that disturbed her, and now she could feel the full force of this unease. She reluctantly crept a little closer with the encouragement of her friends as the fear continued to build. She couldn't help but feel that something horrible was about to happen. There weren't supposed to be dragons flying in the sky. First and foremost, dragons didn't exist. They were mythical creatures from fantasy books like unicorns. This was something that Pete knew in his heart to be true so he was having a difficult time acknowledging that there were actually fire-breathing dragons flying in the sky above him. It was the first day of the rest of her life. This wasn't the day she was actually born, but she knew that nothing would be the same from this day forward. Although this was a bit scary to her, it was also extremely freeing. Her past was no longer a burden or something that she needed to be concerned about and defend. She threw off the covers keeping her warm in bed, placed her feet over the side of the bed, slipped on her slipper, and took the first step of the first day of her new life. It was a rat's nest. Not a literal one, but that is what her hair seemed to resemble every morning when she got up. It was going to take at least an hour to get it under control and she was sick and tired of it. She peered into the mirror and wondered if it was worth it. It wasn't. She opened the drawer and picked up the hair clippers. Debbie knew she was being selfish and unreasonable. She understood why the others in the room were angry and frustrated with her and the way she was acting. In her eyes, it didn't really matter how they felt because she simply didn't care. He scolded himself for being so tentative. He knew he shouldn't be so cautious, but there was a sixth sense telling him that things weren't exactly as they appeared. It was that weird chill that rolls up your neck and makes the hair stand on end. He knew that being so tentative could end up costing him the job, but he learned that listening to his sixth sense usually kept him from getting into a lot of trouble. He stepped away from the mic. This was the best take he had done so far, but something seemed missing. Then it struck him all at once. Visuals ran in front of his eyes and music rang in his ears. His eager fingers went to work in an attempt to capture his thoughts hoping the results would produce something that was at least half their glory. She has seen this scene before. It had come to her in dreams many times before. She had to pinch herself to make sure it wasn't a dream again. As her fingers squeezed against her arm, she felt the pain. It was this pain that immediately woke her up. "It's never good to give them details," Janice told her sister. "Always be a little vague and keep them guessing." Her sister listened intently and nodded in agreement. She didn't fully understand what her sister was saying but that didn't matter. She loved her so much that she would have agreed to whatever came out of her mouth. She didn't like the food. She never did. She made the usual complaints and started the tantrum he knew was coming. But this time was different. Instead of trying to placate her and her unreasonable demands, he just stared at her and watched her meltdown without saying a word.
