It was revealed later that he was born into a family with an abusive father and escaped from his father with his mother.

Afterwards, Inosuke — who was still an infant at the time — and his mother were taken in by Doma into his Paradise Faith cult. Kotoha loved to sing to Inosuke but would apparently change the song lyrics each time. However, after finding out that Doma ate his worshippers, Kotoha fled with her son. Running aimlessly for a human village, Kotoha eventually ended up at the top of a cliff. Seeing no escape route, she made a last-ditch effort to save Inosuke by dropping him into the river below the cliff. She was then devoured by Doma. Later on, Inosuke was discovered and raised by boars. – Sypnosis; Before Final Selection, a Demon Slayer bumps into Inosuke in the latter's mountain. The two competed to see who was stronger, with Inosuke being the victor and taking the Slayer's weapon as a reward. As a result, Inosuke learns more about the Demons and decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps.

While Inosuke does participate in the Final Selection at Mt. Fujikasane, he is off-screen for the entirety of the arc. His presence is hinted by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, when a crow tells him the results of the selection

Inosuke had wandered into the Kyogai's Drum house presumably looking for a demon to kill to serve as his "catalyst" to becoming stronger, but due to the nature of Kyogai's blood demon arts, he ended up trapped for 3 days. He first appears when Zenitsu and Shoichi are searching for an exit, having been separated from Tanjiro and Teruko. Zenitsu slides open a door which he believed was the exit, and desperately opens another when the first door fails. Behind that door is Inosuke, who immediately hurtles out and knocks down another door before running down the opened corridor. Zenitsu is left shaken, with Shoichi wordlessly judging him.

After resting at the Wisteria House due to their injuries, they are summoned by Tanjiro's crow to head to Mount Natagumo. Inosuke and Tanjiro rushes into the mountain, with Zenitsu lagging behind due to his fear, after seeing a fellow Demon Slayer asking for help. The Demon Slayer was then pulled backwards, back into the forest. After witnessing that, Inosuke acts as the vanguard and orders Tanjiro and Zenitsu to follow him. Tanjiro follows Inosuke while Zenitsu stays near the mountain, refusing to enter.

After meeting with an another Demon Slayer who was hiding from the Demons, Inosuke and Tanjiro understands the situation present that the Demon Slayers began to kill each other after entering the woods, due to a Demon's blood art making them into puppets that can be controlled. After trying their best to not kill the controlled Demon Slayers, Inosuke uses his Beast Breathing, Seventh Form: Spatial Awareness to find the demon known as 'Mother'. Inosuke and Tanjiro manages to hang the controlled Demon Slayers onto the trees to immobilize them, however, the demon controlling them twists their necks, killing them after they are immobilized. With heavy hearts, they proceed to the demon's location, but was stopped by a headless puppet controlled by the demon.

During the battle with the headless puppet, Inosuke's hastiness gets him injured and almost killed. Thankfully, Tanjiro saves him and encourages Inosuke to fight alongside him. Even though Inosuke was unwilling to, he however, thanks to Tanjiro's instructions, is able to cut the headless puppet diagonally. Inosuke is very competitive with Tanjiro, thinking he can do everything Tanjiro can. Tanjiro defeats the demon known as 'Mother' and Inosuke is severely wounded, although he is not willing to admit to it.

Tanjiro tries to get Inosuke to get down the mountain and he refuses. They catch a glimpse of a demon girl, who Tanjiro could not smell due to the putrid scent surrounding the mountains. The demon girl calls for another demon called 'Father', who is a large man with the face of a spider. He is a strong demon, though not a Twelve Kizuki, and Inosuke is staggering due to blood loss. Tanjiro is sent flying away due to the demon's strength and shouts for Inosuke to not die at all costs. Inosuke manages to cut the demon's arm, making him climb up to trees to shed his skin and show an even larger spider-like body. Inosuke tries to behead the demon with his Beast Breathing, Third Fang: Devour, but his blades break and he was strangled by the demon. Luckily, Giyu shows up and kills 'Father' with the Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide, saving Inosuke's life.

Inosuke, despite his wounds, tries to challenge Giyu but ends up getting tied up. This makes Inosuke's confidence in himself drop and makes him think he is not as good as he thinks he is. After the battle, Inosuke is then released from the ropes by the Kakushi, the squad that deals with the aftermath of demon battles.

Due to the injuries he sustained from the 'Father', Inosuke's throat became mangled, so he was taken to the Butterfly Mansion to heal alongside Tanjiro and Zenitsu, who went up the mountain behind them and was almost turned into a spider. Humiliated at how he lost, he apologizes to Tanjiro for being so weak.

After Tanjiro gets mission from the Kasugai crow to accompany Kyojuro and also wanting embarks to learn more about the Hinokami Kagura, along with Zenitsu, Inosuke accompany him to the train station. Upon seeing a train for the first time in his life, Insouke thinks it is a guardian of the area and begins to challenge the train in a battle.

As Zenitsu tries to explain Inosuke about the train not being the guardian of the area and is rather a transporting object, Tanjiro instead, explains Inosuke that the train can't fight currently as it is protecting its area. Tanjiro thinks that Inosuke will understand and will stop but instead Inosuke steps back and charges, headbutting the train.

Inosuke behaviour catches people attention. Security appears and they notices that the trio is carrying swords and calls them a possible danger and tries to arrest them. Zenitsu explains that the Corps is not known by the government and hence carrying a sword publicly is not allowed.

As the train begans to board off, the trio jumps onto the train the last second on the last compartment. inosuke is excited at the speed of the train and enters the train going from compartment -to-compartment searching for Kyojuro. While their journey through the train, they hear loud noise comign in the train by a person, they rush towards the noise and stumble upon Kyojuro who was enjoying his vento boxes and exclaiming "Delicious!". Inosuke begins to look out of the window amused by the train which irriattes Zenitsu. Inosuke takes his head out of the window which triggers Zenitsu and begins to pull Inosuke inside. Kyojuro tells Inosuke to stop as a demon may be nearby. As the train conductor approach them, the trio along with Kyojuro get their tickets punched.The four each present their tickets, but the carriage light flickers, followed by a lousy scent detected by Tanjiro. The four watches as a demon emerges from plain view, frightening the passengers and startling the Demon Slayers

The demon roars in response and charges, to which Kyojuro retaliates by using his Flame Breathing, First Form: Unknowing Fire, speeding forward and decapitating it instantly. The trio are amazed at his feat, but Kyojuro adds that there is another demon on board. He moves on ahead, making Tanjiro and Inosuke follow him, while Zenitsu, still afraid, timidly asks not to leave him behind. The lights flicker again, but the conductor and passengers vanish, having run to the other side to avoid the demon.

In the next car, the passengers flee while Kyojuro observes his opponent. When the demon attempts to attack a lone passenger, he warns it that he will be its opponent. Inosuke tries to attack head-on, ignoring Tanjiro's advice to save the passenger first. Inosuke believes he can do both simultaneously, but the demon extends its arms to grab him. Suddenly, Kyojuro rushes in and saves Inosuke, turns back to save the passenger, and advises him to exit the car to safety. Now, with no passengers left, the Flame Hashira unleashes Flame Breathing, Second Form: Rising Scorching Sun, killing the demon in one swing. An amazed Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke all cheerfully ask to be Kyojuro's Tsuguko, to which he happily accepts them all.

Later in the night, along with the other passengers, Inosuke becomes a victim of Enmu's Blood Demon Art puting him to sleep. Inosuke dreams of being the leader of Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Nezuko who are bunnies. It is shown that he expresses them as 'Underlings' and the their names are Ponjiro instead of Tanjiro and Chuitsu instead of Zenitsu. They refer Inosuke as 'Boss' and informs him that there is a giant pompoko in the cave which they go after to hunt. Inosuke offers Nezuko accorns as the others attack the "Pompoko".

Later, when one of Enmu's recurit tries to destroy Inosuke's spiritual core, Inosuke instead finds her in his dream and becomes to attack her. He begans to chase trying to eat her.

Inosuke Hashibira abilities!: Enhanced Flexibility: Inosuke is extremely flexible, to the point where he can bend his body backwards so far that his head reaches between his feet. He later displays the ability to dislocate his arm to extend his reach and dislocate any of the joints in his body at will. This flexibility additionally extends to his internal organs, as he was able to shift his heart and avoid it being pierced in the fight against Daki and Gyutaro.

Animal Imitation: Due to growing up in the wilderness of the mountains, Inosuke observed the wild animals that lived there and incorporated their combat habits into his fighting styles. As a result, both his hand-to-hand fighting style and swordsmanship style are very animalistic, bearing little resemblance to traditional martial arts. Tanjiro Kamado noted that his unnatural fighting style resembles that of a "four-legged beast" due to how his attacks come from an extremely low angle while also being very ferocious and utilizing other unorthodox movements, thus making him very unpredictable and vicious.

Poison Resistance: Inosuke was able to resist and survive the effect of Upper Rank Six's poison to a certain extent, although it was considered incredibly deadly, which suggests that he may have complete immunity to some poisonous substances. However, as stated by Aoi Kanzaki, this also means that none of Shinobu Kocho's medicines will work on him, so if he is exposed to a stronger poison than that of Gyutaro or one that he has not developed a resistance to, they cannot be used as a remedy, and he is in greater danger of death

Enhanced Touch: After growing up in the mountains, Inosuke developed a sharp and incredibly sensitive sense of touch. His skin can even feel the smallest vibrations in the air. Inosuke incorporated this ability into his Spatial Awareness technique, where he uses his acute sense of touch to locate all the demons spread out across a giant mountain and later uses it to detect the location of the Father of the Spider Family. By using this ability, he can tell if anyone is looking at him, especially if they have any hostile intentions. He can even pinpoint the exact location they are looking at, which gives him an edge in combat.

Extrasensory Perception: Inosuke's instincts and intuition are honed to such extremes that he possesses a form of extrasensory perception that allows him to detect things outside the normal range of perception. Inosuke can sense how serious his opponents are, as seen when he sensed that Daki's sash attacks were relaxing a little bit, which gave him an opening to attack, and how strong Akaza and Kyojuro Rengoku were. He was also able to sense a person's malice and intent to kill even when they were outside his range of sight, which prevented him from getting killed by Gyutaro's scythe attack. Inosuke was also able to sense that Daki's obi had living people trapped inside it, which prevented him from accidentally harming them when fighting.
