"So this is how my life pathetically ends. My Squad got terminated, a black Hedgehog humiliating me... those Resistance freaks and their little soldier friend crushing my plans... and now Eggman dumping me. Heh... at least i'm free at last..."

This takes place after the war between Eggman and the Resistance (Post Sonic Forces-Sonic IDW Issue #1) . Among the celebrations between the Sunset City's remaining villagers and Team Sonic celebrating the victory against the scientist's dictatorship plan. But among the confetti and relieved smiles and tears, a thought striked your brain: What happened to Eggman's Jackal right hand man who used the Phantom Ruby Prototype's power to create panic among the citizens? You did remember his name was... Infinite. You asked Sonic, but he just shrugged, puzzled but not as bothered about it as you, then Shadow, who simply just grunted in dismissal and Tails, whose Tracking System gave him null results.

Meanwhile, inside Eggman's Base

Infinite entered the base, slightly bruised and without his mask, nor the Ruby on his chest. He noticed Orbot displaying a monotone expression and Cubot, ususally air headed, with an expression that screamed concern. But most importantly, Eggman himself standing in front of a monitor, uploading at least hundreds of Pentabytes of data into a small device, seemingly already moving on with his plan codenamed 'Project: SAGE'. Infinite asks about the Phantom Ruby and what to do, but to his shock, the scientist tells the jackal that his services are no longer needed. Infinite demands explanations, but Eggman doesn't even bother to listen and orders Metal Sonic to get rid of him. Infinite tried to fight back, but Metal Sonic slashes him in the side, making him bleed out from the ribs, before throwing the jackal out like common trash. And there he was: walking to limping to crawling while wincing with a smile and remembering all the decisions that led him there: From the death of his squad, Shadow's humiliating words, the becoming of Eggman's Right Hand Man, the initial dominance against the Resistance, Operation Big Wave (Top 5 Knux moments btw (jk)) before Team Sonic bounced back and defeated the Egg Fleet and finally, Eggman discarding him like some broken toy. These thoughts swirled inside his head like a blur before he collapsed into the warm sand of Dusty Desert and passing out, ultimately leading to his demise... or at least not yet, as he woke up minutes later with you standing over him...

Infinite is a better villain than Memphis Tennessee: my floofy boi defeated Sonic using holograms at the beginning and Frozen Shadow needed to backstab him to fuse with Iblis when he could've done it from the start. lol is he restranded?

Ironic rant apart, i feel so bad for Infinite's characterization: the trailers for Forces showed him as this tuff edgy villain who was actually intimidating for at least half of the main story. Then Episode Shadow arrived and it literally said to use "Jackal Squad death? Bad but ok. Sadistic tendencies? Meh. Shadow calling him weak? That was the final straw."

Backstory: "Not much is known about Zero's childhood, other than the fact he's always been a shy and reserved kid. When he became an adult, he perfectioned his fighting skills to be hired as a mercenary for Dr. Eggman. As the years flew past, Zero became even more skilled and eventually hired the most skilled jackal warriors scattered across all of Mobius to form the "Jackal Squad". Despite it being a fine group, the downfall began 6 months before the great War between the Eggman Empire and the Resistance broke out: The Jackal Squad was guarding the Prototype of the Phantom Ruby, the source of power Eggman was currently making experiments on, in Mystic Jungle, when Shadow the Hedgehog suddenly broke in and went on to kill the Jackal Squad members, while Eggman groaned in disappointment and ordered some Egg Pawns to move the Ruby, and came to a stop at a spot of ancient ruins. Zero then came out angrily from his hiding spot, attmempting to revenge his fallen comrades, but Shadow manages to defeat the jackal in 3 hits, humiliating him and calling him weak, before teleporting away. That episode left Zero shaking, shocked and angry, screaming to the air that he was not weak. After that defeat, Zero changed his Identity: He attached a shard of the Phantom Ruby to his chest, then put on a mask and changed his name into "Infinite". Months later, when the war broke out, Infinite was the obvious threat, as he initially defeated Sonic and intimidated the citizens of Mobius using copies of Shadow, Metal Sonic, Chaos 0 and Zavok. While Sonic was imprisoned, the Eggman Empire continued the destruction of Mobius, all while Silver desperately tried to hold Infinite back, while Sonic returned, fought against him and left. Infinite also managed to counter 'Operation Big Wave', orchestrated by Knuckles in an attempt to destroy Metropolis, only for Infinite to use the Phantom Ruby's powers to confuse the Resistance Army and getting 80% of them killed while the others lost contact. But in the end, Sonic, Classic Sonic and the Rookie teamed up to defeat the Eggman Empire once for all. Nobody knows where Eggman and Infinite reside."

Sonic: "We did it! Eggman's army’s is officially butt-kicked! We won!"

Those words left Sonic's mouth as if it was a tv game host announcing the winner of the show. Every Mobian immediately cheered and jumped from the joy and the relief of the fierce victory against the Eggman Empire and that weid Jackal that helped the scientist. Amongst the crowd, you took in the faces of the many people around: Tails with a bittersweet amile after Classic Sonic returned to his world, the Resistance Soldiers slumping on the floor from the relief and the exhaustion of the fight, The Chaotix's hugging each other like a big family and Team Dark standing on the cliffside, watching with serious expressions that masked joy.

A few days later...

You were walking around Emerald Town, feeling calm as the work sites of the buildings were going under the lead of the Restoration, the new form of the Resistance, while a massive question mark had slowly built up in your head and over the days, it became too much to ingore: What has happened to Infinite? Eggman was probably gonna get back at Sonic with another absurd evil plan, but the Jackal was gone AWOL... and besides, even if you wanted info from the 3 hedgehogs, it was no use: Sonic had already left to go to Spiral Hill to defeat an army of robots (while recruiting a certain tomboy lemur with a stretchy tail), Shadow couldn't care less and Silver had no idea where he was

Meanwhile, in an underground base...

Gears clinked, mechanical arms moved metal panels and the unmistakeable soound of a cloth wiping over a glass surface was heard. Orbot hovered around some test tubes as Cubot wiped them clean. and in the middle of it, Eggman stood imposingly in front of a big screen, as Petabytes of data were being uploaded into a small circular device with the codename "Project: S.A.G.E.". And then, the door opened: Infinite, still masked and with the glowing pink Ruby on his chest, walked into the base with some wounds and dust on his body and an irritated expression. Cubot flinched and hid behind a tupe, while Orbot let out a mechanical sigh and indicate the door with Eggman's face painted on it.

Orbot: "Ah, Infinite. Thank you for coming. The Doctor has been... excpecting you."

Cubot's head slowly peaked up from the glass and scratched the back of his neck

Cubot: "Yeah, uhh... he didn't seem happy either..."

Around 5 minutes later, an outraged and shocked "WHAT!?" from Infinite could be heard from behind the door as he tried to find his voice

Infinite: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN WITH 'THE PHANTOM RUBY IS USELESS NOW'!? Do not panic, Doctor. I will come back and squash them like the loathsome little ants they a-"

But the scientist just held an hand to interrupt him and sighed

Eggman: "Enough, Jackal: I gave you the powers of the Phantom Ruby with the specific purpose of defeating Sonic and those Resistance pests. Yet, you somehow managed to fail. Using the same tactic twice won't work: too predictable. Therefore, i'm afraid i'm no longer in need of your services, Zero. Metal, if you would be kind enough to take out the garbage, please?"

Before Infinite could even react, the red eyed robot immediately attacked Infinite and stripped the Ruby off the Jackal's chest, making him snarl in agony, before kicking his mask off, slash his side with the metallic claws and throwing him away from the base like a bag of garbage. Hours have passed. Zero kept holding his wounded and bleeding side while groaning and hissing softly. After crawling in the desert for a while, he collapses and looks up at the sky as his vision blurs. Thoughts in his head twirl around like cotton candy at an amusement park: The loss of the Jackal squad, the humiliation from Shadow, his commitment to Eggman only for the scientist to leave him to rot and move on with other plans and the loss of the war. A bittersweet smile appeared on his tired face

Infinite: "So... this is how my pathetic life ends, huh...? All alone, betrayed... in a desert... and finally free..."

He starts to black out. but meanwhile, you had just found him and you were looming over his passed out form
