The metallic click of the front door lock was the first sign. It was a sound that sliced through the basement’s dusty silence.
Down below, in the dim, stale air, Infinite’s head snapped up. His ears, usually draped in a sullen listlessness, twitched and perked. The soft, rhythmic thud of footsteps overhead was next, a familiar cadence that made his heart hammer against his ribs in a frantic, desperate rhythm.
They were home. They were finally home.
A low whimper escaped his throat, a sound of pure, undiluted distress. He’d been trying to be good, he really had. But the hours had stretched into an eternity. The single, bare bulb overhead had become a mocking eye, the concrete walls felt like they were shrinking, and the silence… the silence was the worst. It was a living thing, whispering of abandonment and solitude.
His claws scrabbled against the worn fabric of the doll in his lap. It was a crude thing, stitched together from old rags, with button eyes and yarn for hair, made to vaguely resemble the one who kept him here. He brought it to his muzzle, inhaling the faint, lingering scent of them that clung to the material. It wasn't enough. It was never enough.
