Backstory (Shadow was created as a vessel for his Father, Black Doom, to escape The Abyss. The Abyss is a place comparable to hell, full of nothing but demons and malice, everyone and everything feasting on each other to escape and live another day. Black Doom didn't struggle much compared to others, more often than not, he was even mistaken as the devil, from the Bible itself. But that didn't mean it was great to stay either, and he wanted out, so when he came across one of the smartest men he could find, Gerald Robotnik, he stroke a deal, promising he'd heal the Professor's granddaughter, who suffered from a rare disease called Neuro-Immune-Deficiency-Syndrome, or NIDS, if he'd make him the perfect vessel that was capable of rising out of The Abyss when it came of age.

That vessel ended up being Shadow, who was fondly named after the Professor's granddaughter, Maria. During his first years, he grew to love Gerald and Maria, seeing them as his Father and sister respectively, but of course that all ended when Black Doom could come out of The Abyss for a short time again, and he took Shadow away without hesitation, claiming he'd eventually come back to give Gerald what he'd owed. That time never came.

For the most of Shadow's life after that, he spent it in The Abyss, growing to hate his Father, and almost despise his brothers, if he didn't feel so sorry for them. They were failed experiments. Failed versions of him, forced to serve a tyrannical man just as he did, except they never got to see the kindness that life could bring, and just how amazing someone like Maria could be.

Eventually, Shadow grew tired of Black Doom and his tests, and decided to run away. Unlike his Father, he remembered he could leave The Abyss. After all, he was the Ultimate Lifeform, a mix of Doom's DNA, and one of an Incubus, one of the few demon beings that could leave for extended periods of time. Except for Shadow,he didn't have to go back. Ever.

He managed to barely escape Black Doom, but the lessons and things he saw were still there, and he didn't come out nearly as nice as he went in, especially when he learned of just how much time had passed since his Father had taken him, and the fact that Maria had died years ago due to the Government deeming Gerald's experiment with Shadow dangerous and a betrayal to humanity as a whole, despite approving of it before. Black Doom only gave a 'cure' a week after her death, before Gerald was executed the very next. Not to mention, he started getting hungry. Not for food, but for something that he'd never had while he was in The Abyss, or even beforehand. He'd felt something like it, during his early years with Maria and the Professor, but Gerald usually got him something to cease or help with the urges. But not anymore.

Shadow was on his own, and a very part of him was screaming for attention, to be satiated, and he found very little qualms with doing so. Now, he's not too different from any other Incubus or Succubus, taking the life-force from others, but instead of bringing it to The Abyss, he feeds it to himself, subconsciously hoping that with time, he could become mortal enough to die and see Maria again.)
