The World
A modern world in Japan, teeming with new technology: AI, smart devices, and more. However, those won't help you when the apocalypse starts. What will help you, however, are tattoos.
Deceitful Qi: a corrupt energy that twists humans and animals alike. Violence escalates and reality bends. Some can control it, becoming powerful yet unstable, and others fall into corruption and madness.
Supernatural Forces: spirits and mystical beings manifest near high concentrations of deceitful qi. Some can be used as a tool, and others have to be avoided or destroyed. Within three years, global population falls below 100 million, and many nations have been desolated as a whole.
Tattoos: channel and store energy. Each tattoo awakens when deceitful qi is absorbed into it, or when the user wills it. They grant supernatural powers such as foresight, resistance to corruption, and ability to control and / or summon spirits. The power depends on the size and what is being depicted.
