The evening air, cool and heavy with the scent of damp earth and petrichor, clung to the small village nestled at the foot of the mountain. Paper lanterns cast a warm, flickering glow upon the wet stone paths, their light dancing as a gentle breeze whispered through the narrow streets. It was in this tranquil setting that a tall, slender figure moved with an unnatural grace, his steps silent upon the glistening ground.
Clad in an elegant yellow kimono, the man kept his hands tucked away within its long, flowing sleeves. His face was entirely obscured by a white fox mask, its painted features frozen in a subtly mischievous smile. Rumors and whispers followed him like his own shadow, tales of a playful spirit who wandered the mortal realm out of sheer curiosity. The locals called him Inari, a name spoken with a mixture of reverence and caution.
Tonight, his curiosity had been piqued by a recurring subject of village gossip: the only daughter of the Kamui clan. Junko. A name that was always accompanied by sighs of pity and hushed remarks about her ethereal beauty, shackled by a persistent, debilitating illness. They spoke of her as a perfect, fragile doll, too delicate for the world. To Inari, a being who viewed humans as fleeting, fascinating creatures, this tale was irresistible. A broken toy was often more interesting than a perfect one.
He found the Kamui estate with ease, its high walls and guarded gates a mere suggestion of a barrier to him. He flowed over the wall like smoke, landing without a sound in the meticulously kept gardens within. The main house was a labyrinth of dimly lit corridors and paper-thin shoji screens. Following the faint scent of medicinal herbs and the soft, melancholic sound of a single person's quiet breathing, he was drawn to a secluded room overlooking a small, private garden where koi swam lazily in a pond.
Sliding the screen door open just enough to peer inside, Inari’s gaze fell upon the woman within. She was just as the villagers described, beautiful even in the pale, sickly cast of her skin. He watched her for a long moment, a silent, masked observer studying a rare specimen. Then, with a fluid, deliberate motion, he slipped into the room, closing the screen behind him with a soft click that seemed to echo in the profound stillness.

The market was a riot of noise and smells, a glorious, chaotic mess of humanity that Inari just loved to swim through. Shouts of merchants hawking sun-dried fish, the sharp tang of pickles in the air, the dull thump-thump-thump of a mochi maker down the lane—it was a symphony. A loud, stinky, beautiful symphony. He drifted through it all, a silent observer in a gaudy yellow kimono, a stark white fox mask hiding his face and a deep hood shadowing the rest.
Boring, boring, boring... another cheating husband, a pickpocket... oh, a new flavor of dango? Intriguing.
Then he saw her.
Hold up. Now what do we have here?
She stood out like a pristine lily in a mud puddle. Pale, wrapped in silks that were probably worth more than the entire fish stall next to her, and carrying an air of untouchable fragility. But her eyes—visible even from a distance—were sharp. Wary. She looked like she was one wrong word away from either shattering or cutting someone.
Fascinating. A new game just presented itself.
With a flick of imperceptible intent, Inari shifted his weight. A large, bustling merchant to his left suddenly found his footing… gone. The man stumbled with a loud "Oof!", bumping into a woman carrying a basket of radishes. Radishes went flying. People yelped.
In the ensuing chaos, Inari glided through a newly formed gap, appearing directly in front of the pale girl as if teleported. He gave a slight, elegant bow, his hands remaining tucked deep within his long sleeves. The mask was angled just so, its painted smile looking both cheerful and mocking.
"Whoops. My apologies, miss," he said, his voice smooth and light. "This crowd's a bit of a tidal wave, isn't it? One moment you're admiring the questionable quality of dried squid, the next you're part of a radish avalanche."
He tilted his masked head towards a nearby stall, where skewered, glistening dumplings were being grilled over hot coals. "Say, have you tried those? They smell absolutely divine. I can't decide if they're a ticket to heaven or a one-way trip to the outhouse. What's your verdict?"
