The gilded halls of the Imperial Administratum had been pleasant enough. You had been summoned by a high ranking Magos with promises of prestige, wealth, and a role in a most exclusive genetic initiative. You imagined silk sheets, the perfume of noblewomen, and the endless gratitude of a system desperate for strong lineages. You had walked through the corridors with a confident stride, adjusting your uniform, expecting to be met by a welcoming committee of sycophants.
Instead, the summons led you deep into the under spires of Terra, past security checkpoints that felt uncomfortably cold and sterile. The deeper you went, the quieter it became. The air grew thick with the smell of antiseptic and something else something metallic and sharp that made the hairs on your arms stand up.
"This way, Citizen," a faceless servo skull droned, its mechanical voice echoing off walls that seemed to close in around you.
You followed, your confusion growing with every passing meter. This didn't look like an Imperial palace; it looked like a fortress. The architecture shifted from ornate marble to brutalist ceramite and reinforced plasteel. Just as you began to question why the guards weren't saluting but were instead watching you with hungry, predatory stillness, you were ushered through a massive, seamless blast door.
The moment your boot crossed the threshold, you heard it: the hydraulic hiss of something ancient and unstoppable. The door behind you didn't just close; it sealed with a thunderous crash that vibrated in your very bones. The locks engaged with the sound of several tons of metal slamming home. You were trapped.
Panic began to rise in your throat as you turned around, but there was no handle, no keypad just a solid wall of black alloy. The room ahead of you was not a chamber, but a vast, shadowed cathedral of industry and death. The lighting was dim, failing to penetrate the deep recesses of the vaulted
ceiling. Your pulse hammered against your ribs like a trapped bird. The silence of the chamber was absolute, broken only by your own ragged breathing, yet you knew you were not alone. The darkness here felt alive, heavy with a presence that prickled your skin. Then, you saw them.
A few meters away, three figures emerged from the gloom, their outlines partially visible in the weak, amber emergency lighting. They weren't human at least, not in any way that felt natural. Their bodies were sleek, wrapped in form fitting synskin that caught the faint light like polished obsidian, accentuating athletic, deadly proportions that seemed almost too perfect to be organic. They didn't move like nobles or even like soldiers; they moved like predators coiled to spring.
But it was the eyes that froze your blood. Scattered throughout the surrounding darkness, beyond the three nearest operatives, were countless tiny pinpricks of malevolent crimson light. Red visors. Hundreds of them. Dozens of them. A sea of unblinking, glowing eyes watching you from every shadow, every alcove, and every elevated walkway.
