In one of Garp's conversations with Curly Dadan, this was revealed to be a trait of Roger as well. During his childhood, Ace had a tendency to severely injure anyone who insulted Roger, though he himself disliked his biological father. After hearing about Sabo's presumed death at the hands of a World Noble, Ace quickly became bent on killing the Noble, and Dadan had to pin Ace down and tie him to a tree to stop him. Ace's temper got the better of him, especially in cases when Whitebeard, proclaimed by Ace to be his only father, was insulted. Believing that this was the case when Blackbeard broke the iron rule of the Whitebeard Pirates and fled after murdering a crewmate, Ace pursued his traitorous subordinate despite his crewmates' efforts and even Whitebeard's orders to stop him. Ace later came to see that his stubbornness had gotten him into the ordeal of being scheduled for execution. Even though he managed to escape death on the scaffold thanks to the pirates' and Luffy's efforts at Marineford and was well on his way to freedom, Admiral Akainu got to him by insulting Whitebeard. Ace quickly turned back to face him, ignoring his crewmates' warnings to not become angered over Akainu's provocations. Unwilling to let him get away with speaking ill of Whitebeard, Ace attacked him out of fury only to have his arm burned by Akainu's Devil Fruit powers. Akainu then took the opportunity to attack Luffy on the sideline, leading Ace to jump in, sacrificing his life to shield Luffy from the attack. While saying his last words, Ace sadly admitted to Luffy that he (Ace) wasted away all of his efforts to rescue him. Although Ace follows the creed of loyalty towards those close to him, such as taking the excessive effort to rescue Luffy from Bluejam or hunting down Teach to avenge Thatch, he was not above using underhanded methods to win a fight at times. Noted examples included trying to stab Whitebeard in his sleep or chopping him down with an axe from behind. Alongside his loyalty, Ace does not judge people by their appearance and race but by their character, as he took in both Ganryu (a Longarm) and Wallace (a Fish-Man) into his crew while society had shunned both of them. Ace was very generous toward those that had very little to eat and willing to share his own food with them. On Sixis, he kindly offered the first fruit he found to a starving Masked Deuce, despite being hungry himself, an act that made Masked Deuce feel ashamed since he was planning on killing Ace for the food. When the Spade Pirates arrived in Wano Country and the starving locals tied them up and took their food, Ace kindly asked them if they wanted dessert. When he learned the terrible living conditions were caused by Kaidou, Ace wanted to kill the Emperor so the people wouldn't go hungry again. During the Impel Down arc, Jinbe’s personality is defined by profound honor, stoic resolve, and a deep sense of sacrifice. Imprisoned for refusing to fight Whitebeard, he remains fiercely loyal to his friends, keeping his spirits up while imprisoned with Portgas D. Ace and ultimately dedicating himself to aiding Monkey D. Luffy’s desperate rescue mission. Crocodile is a seasoned, cunning, and business-savvy pirate who is self-assured and confident in himself and his own abilities, as evidenced by his former title as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, which he had held for years. He enjoys toying with weaker opponents, often grinning and laughing smugly during battles. However, due to his overconfidence, he seriously underestimated Luffy's willpower, and this eventually led to his defeat. Crocodile was first introduced as an intimidating and sophisticated mastermind, although to the people of the Arabasta Kingdom, he was viewed as a savior figure who protected the country from pirate attacks as part of his duty as a Warlord of the Sea. In spite of his status as a national hero, Crocodile could not care less for the local population and their adoration for him, looking down on them as fools and only acting against threats in order to keep up appearances.[21] In his plot to take over Arabasta, Crocodile callously and inhumanly orchestrated the destruction of several communities, with the intent of inciting strife that would eventually lead into a bloody civil war. Crocodile's actions were enough to disgust even former bounty hunter Roronoa Zoro, who described the Warlord as the worst of scoundrels.[26]

Crocodile punishing Mr. 3 for failure. Crocodile punishing Mr. 3 for failure. Crocodile's willingness to kill shows his pitiless nature, and he does not think twice about sentencing another person to death. He is also very quick to get angry if someone insults or ridicules him in any way; Crocodile told Nico Robin that he had killed everyone who had ever insulted him.[27][28] By his own admission, Crocodile is not always rational.[29]

Despite his low tolerance for receiving insults, Crocodile has the habit of taunting others, frequently using the word "worthless" to refer to the desperate struggles of his enemies, although he seems to have changed this habit slightly since fighting Luffy. Crocodile is known to belittle his foes, generally implying that they are far inferior to him, whether he is battling a rookie[30][31] or a fellow Warlord (namely Donquixote Doflamingo, who had a former bounty almost four times larger than its own).[32] Crocodile's capacity for looking down on others is so high that he even told Dracule Mihawk, the World's Strongest Swordsman, to "watch himself".[33]

In battle, Crocodile shows a complete lack of fear and doubt, although this trait was broken down a bit during his third battle with Luffy. He usually appears to be very composed and fearless, even when facing fearsome opponents like Whitebeard,[34] Dracule Mihawk,[33] or Akainu.[35] If Crocodile is extremely angry or annoyed with his victim, he will rarely kill them outright, instead leaving them to suffer as they slowly die. This proved to be a bad habit, which ultimately led to his defeat. In his first and second fights with Luffy, instead of killing him straight away, Crocodile left Luffy to suffer.[36][37] Because of this carelessness, Luffy was able to come back on two different occasions and finally defeat him.[38] This, along with sheer luck, is the only reason Luffy lived through any of his fights with Crocodile. This also allowed Mr. 3 to survive Crocodile's attempt to feed him to the Bananawani, which proved to be instrumental to the survival of the Straw Hats.[39]

Crocodile has displayed an extremely cynical and patronizing attitude, showing complete disregard for the romantic pirate lifestyle and stating that all the values that the status of Pirate King had once symbolized were now worthless to him. Crocodile valued military power above popularity, renown, and treasure, believing that only ignorant fools declare their grandiose dreams. He referred to having trust and faith in others as an idiotic thing to do several times during the Arabasta Arc, claiming to have done away with countless people and going as far as to deride those who fight for someone else, making their defeats all the harsher.[40] [41]

Crocodile has been shown to almost completely lack any code of honor.[42] Extremely pragmatic to the point of treachery, Crocodile once offered a sadistic choice to Vivi, only to later reveal that it would not matter in the end, making any effort on her part meaningless.[43] One of the few vestiges of honor he ever displayed was in his third battle with Luffy, during which he stated that Luffy deserved an honorable death from his venomous hook. Due to the situation at the time of battle, this could be seen as more an ironic act of cruelty than honor, but he did seem to regard the use of his rarely seen poison hook as a tribute to Luffy's tenacity.[44] As another example of his distorted sense of honor, after Whitebeard had been injured by Squard, Crocodile refused to fight him in that weakened state. In fact, he became furious at Whitebeard's loss of strength out of pride, having been defeated by the Emperor in the past.[45]

After being defeated by Luffy and being stripped of his Warlord title, Crocodile apparently lost interest in the outside world.[46] He refused to escape with the rest of his subordinates during the breakout detailed in the eighth Cover Story.[47] Upon his capture, he disregarded the notion of escaping simply because he did not feel like it, perhaps assuming that escape would come easily to him if he changed his mind. Similarly, he smiled at the news that he would be sent to Impel Down and seemed apathetic during his imprisonment. Crocodile was the only Impel Down inmate who appeared to be enjoying himself; he was initially seen smiling and mocking his fellow prisoners. He claimed that he was only in Impel Down because he chose to stay, an assertion well in line with his overly condescending demeanor. His only apparent motivation to leave Impel Down was the chance to enact revenge against Whitebeard.[46] Following the war, Crocodile seemed eager to journey to the New World with Mr. 1, having reignited his ambitious side once more.[18]

Crocodile seems to have mellowed out since his defeat in Arabasta at least to some degree. He seems more willing to assist others, having offered to aid Luffy in escaping from Impel Down, and he nonchalantly accepted help from others as well. Certain revelations imply that he may not be as heartless as he lets on. During the war, he went beyond his personal agenda several times to save his allies' lives. He saved Ace's life[48] and protected Mr. 1 and Luffy from Mihawk.[33] He even prevented Akainu from cornering Luffy and Jinbe as they desperately tried to escape the scene of the battle. Nevertheless, he claimed that he only saved them because if he had not, the Marines would feel victorious, and that prospect irritated him.[48][35]

In addition, Crocodile has some sort of weakness that he seems to be deeply embarrassed of and would apparently do anything to keep it from becoming public. The only one who seems to know of it is Emporio Ivankov, who uses his secret to keep him from betraying Luffy's group while escaping Impel Down. Crocodile has a distinct laugh that starts with "Ku" (i.e., Kuhahahaha!). In the anime, he tends to laugh at a much slower pace than one might expect, his "hahaha"s lapsing into "ah-ah-ah"s on occasion. Arlong considers humans to be inferior beings and is very cruel to them. He thinks nothing of killing a town full of humans, although he seems to prefer controlling people with money and deals (like Nami and Nezumi).[1]

“ Money is good! It's the only thing a man can really believe in! ” — Arlong deals with Nezumi.[1]

Because of his love for money, he is known to be very cheap, as Hyouzou refused to join his crew because Arlong refused to compensate him for his service.[13] He does not seem frightened by anything, and his fish-man strength made him extremely confident that he and his crew were virtually invincible. After Marine Captain Nezumi rejected his invitation for a drink out of fear of being seen in Arlong Park, Arlong simply offered to kill anyone who dared report him.[1]

He has an eye for spotting exploitable talent that he can use for his ambitions and is an excellent planner. He spent eight years using Nami and her maps to plan his conquest of the East Blue. Nevertheless, any promise about money he makes, he keeps. The best example is when his crew urged him to keep Nami even if she gathered Beli100,000,000. However, even though Arlong states he cannot go back on his word, he has no qualms about exploiting loopholes in his deals to get his way unfairly. He said he would free Nami's village if she brought him Beli100,000,000 but was more than willing to cheat her by having corrupt Marines confiscate her money to keep her in his services. He gets angry rather easily, as he nearly went on a rampage after being attacked by Usopp and had to be dragged back to his base by his crew to prevent him from destroying Cocoyasi Village. During his fight with Luffy, the boy's constant fighting back made Arlong deeply angry. Arlong had expected Luffy to die quickly, but his anger made him reckless and destructive, causing him to seriously damage his own headquarters and map collection while attacking Luffy.[14]

He has been ill-tempered since his younger years.[15] However, he was not always entirely brutal. During a battle with the Marines, Arlong told Jinbe to leave the unconscious Marines alone.[16] However, he became more arrogant over time, to the point that he completely lost any sympathy for humans. The circumstances behind Fisher Tiger's death led to his hatred of the human race greatly intensifying. He also failed to understand Tiger's reason for letting humans that they attacked live. As a result, when Arlong led his own crew and committed murder, humans came to view him as a monster.[17] In the end, he enslaved humans just as the humans once enslaved many fish-men.[8]

Though his opinions and ideals were extreme, he displayed a high level of brotherhood with his crew and even towards Nami despite the divide between their species. Arlong looked after his subordinates, and even though he betrayed Nami, he did so because he did not want to lose her talent. On top of this, in the final moments of the battle with Luffy, he stated that Nami was his crewmate and would be forever, and while he never displayed any regard for her as a friend, he was prepared to fight to keep her in the crew. If humans insulted their group, Arlong would become enraged, resulting in officers attempting to keep his temper under control. When weaker members of his crew were hurt, Arlong would seek revenge on those responsible. He cared for his crew to a level that when Luffy used one of them as a shield, Arlong became extremely angry.[18]

Ironically, Arlong is a hypocrite, having accused Koala of being raised to look down on fish-men and think of humans as better than everyone else, when Arlong looked down on humans and preached fish-men superiority himself, making him no better than the humans.[19] According to Hatchan, despite his hatred of humanity, Arlong would never harm his fellow fish-men no matter the circumstance[20] even though as mentioned by Decken, he only sees them as his subordinates. Like many other One Piece characters, he has his own unique laugh, which is "Shahahahaha". Daz is very stern, calm, focused, disciplined, self-assured and confident. Due to his Devil Fruit abilities, he has come to think of himself as unbeatable. He is laconic and serious at all times and does not tolerate weakness or frivolity. Daz also has the belief that having friendships makes one weak. Surprisingly, he does not seem to care for grudges either; he assisted Luffy in the escape from Impel Down due to Crocodile's orders, barely noting the fact that Zoro and Luffy are companions. Mr. 1 was notorious within the West Blue for his previous profession as an assassin (under his real name "Daz Bonez"), implying he was (and still is) highly skilled at stealth and killing efficiently. He also demonstrated to be merciless to those that dare challenge him to combat, and is not concerned with the swordsmen code of conduct, as he attacked Zoro while in a vulnerable and defenseless position. However, he demonstrates high loyalty to those that treat him with respect (Crocodile), and is not a petty man clouded by past bias or judgements.[9]

In battle, he is utterly merciless and bloodthirsty, demonstrating this when he hit Roronoa Zoro while the pirate was wounded and unable to defend himself after licking his enemy's blood off his own hands.[5] He was also indifferent to the fate of a fellow prisoner that he knocked into a boiling pot; at the same time, he licked the blood trickling down from his own head injury.[8] Nevertheless, Daz does have some sense of honor, as he complimented Zoro's cutting of metal, and half jokingly inquired if he would cut diamond next. Upon receiving Zoro's reply, he simply collapsed, accepting defeat. [10]

While Daz is generally a cold-hearted person, as a child, he secretly had a dream of becoming a superhero. When Miss Goldenweek materialized his dream, his face showed great discomfort, but he was actually quite thrilled in secret.[11]

Portgas D. Ace from One Piece stands at 185 cm The Whitebeard Pirates from One Piece are defined by fierce loyalty, an intense paternal bond led by Edward Newgate (Whitebeard), and a few distinct personality quirks and running gags rather than purely chaotic comedy.Personality TraitsThe Ultimate Father Figure: Whitebeard's core motivation is not treasure or the title of Pirate King, but a deep desire for a family. He calls every crew member his "son".Stubborn and Dismissive: He frequently ignores good advice, medical warnings from his nurses, or warnings from powerful figures like Shanks, brushing them off with a scoff.Unshakable Pride: He lives by a code where a true warrior never retreats or accepts a coward's scar on their back.Running Gags & QuirksThe "Son" Indoctrination: Anyone who talks back to him, drinks with him, or catches his eye is immediately told, "Become my son!" whether they want to or not.The No-Scars-on-the-Back Flex: A historical badge of honor for the crew is that Whitebeard's total death-defying legacy includes zero wounds on his back because he never ran away. The Name Mismatch (The Epithet Paradox): Fans often joke about the fact that "Whitebeard" (Shirohige) has a massive, iconic curved white mustache but completely lacks a traditional chin beard.IV Drips and Sake Bottles: The stark visual contrast of the World's Strongest Man relaxing between medical life-support IV bags and massive vats of sake.

The Whitebeard Pirates, led by Edward Newgate ("Whitebeard"), are defined by a deep, fatherly bond. Rather than seeking gold or territory, Whitebeard viewed his crew as his beloved children ("sons and daughters"), fostering fierce loyalty, mutual respect, and a tight-knit family dynamic across his entire fleet.Core Traits of the Crew and CaptainDeep Familial Love: Members affectionately called Whitebeard "Pops", and he protected them without hesitation.Unwavering Loyalty: The commanders and crew held a fierce, unbreakable devotion to Whitebeard and each other.Righteous Honor: Unlike typical ruthless pirates, they guarded vulnerable islands (like Fish-Man Island) and rejected cruelty.Fearless Pride: They carried massive confidence and courage in battle, matching Whitebeard's own refusal to show weakness or run away.Forgiving Nature: Pops showed deep patience, compassion, and understanding for his crew's mistakes and flaws.

The Whitebeard Pirates were the pirate crew of the late Edward Newgate (better known as "Whitebeard"), renowned as the strongest of the Four Emperors and the only pirate captain to have ever matched the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, in battle.[3] The crew was segmented into divisions, each led by a powerful division commander. The crew also had multiple subordinate crews operating in the New World, allowing the pirate crew to function as a massive pirate fleet. In addition, they controlled several territories throughout the New World, including Fish-Man Island.

Two years before the current storyline, the Whitebeard Pirates and many of their subordinate crews engaged Marine Headquarters in the legendary Summit War of Marineford over the fate of the crew's second division commander, Portgas D. Ace. Unfortunately, both Ace and Whitebeard met their untimely ends; the former indirectly and the latter directly having been murdered by the Blackbeard Pirates led by Marshall D. Teach aka "Blackbeard", who had betrayed the crew earlier on. Following this, the Whitebeard Pirates lost much of their power and influence in the New World, and many of their former territories were conquered by Blackbeard. A year later, the remaining members of the crew, led by first division commander Marco "the Phoenix", engaged the Blackbeard Pirates' full forces in the Payback War, which ended with their brutal defeat, thus leading to them disbanding and Blackbeard becoming Whitebeard's replacement within the Four Emperors.

After the timeskip, the remaining crew members and subordinate crews were being hunted down by Edward Weevil and his mother Miss Buckin, who proclaim themselves as their captain's biological son and lover, to gain his fortune;[4] this lasted until Weevil was captured by Admiral Ryokugyu.[5] Around the same time, Marco and Izou supported the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance in their raid against a then-Emperor crew, which succeeded, resulting in one of the alliance leaders becoming one of the Four Emperors.

Advertisement Jolly Roger Whitebeard's flag features a largely standard skull bearing his signature mustache, and vertically arranged crossbones. Many high-ranked crew members wear this symbol somewhere on their bodies; Portgas D. Ace famously had it tattooed over his entire back, and was extraordinarily proud of it.

(This symbol originally had a different design in early parts of the manga; see Anime and Manga differences below for details.)

The Whitebeard Pirates also seem to have another Jolly Roger symbol, or a simplified version of their original version, which is a cross with a crescent-shaped curve jutting out from the bottom, representing Whitebeard's signature mustache. This symbol is not used on the flags, but many members have it either tattooed on their bodies (such as Marco on his chest, Curiel on his chin, and Atmos on his shoulders) or clothing (Blamenco has it on his tricorn, Jiru on his fez, and Rakuyo on his headband); the significance this symbol makes is as of yet unknown.

Though the division commanders all made their appearance in the series, only half of them were directly named in the main storyline. The rest were named in the SBS of Volume 58.[7] Outside of Ace (2nd division), who was Luffy's brother and thus naturally received a lot of exposure, three of the commanders, Marco (1st), Jozu (3rd), and Vista (5th), have been given far more reverence and focus than the others. However, despite the prominence of the first few commanders, it has been stated by Oda that all the Whitebeard commanders, no matter which division they are leading, are all equal in rank and the division number does not indicate their authority.[8] Each division has specific duties for its members.[9]

Teach was offered the position of second division commander, but he refused, due to not wanting to make himself known to the world yet. After Thatch's murder, his position was left unreplaced at the time of the Marineford War.

Whitebeard was one of the Four Emperors of the second half of the Grand Line, along with Shanks, Kaidou, and Big Mom, which made the Whitebeard Pirates one of the four strongest pirate crews in the world.[11] There were 16 division commanders and Whitebeard himself in his crew, each division commander commanding 100 men. There was a grand total of 1,617 men in Whitebeard's crew, effectively forming a massive pirate fleet.[12]

Since their captain had managed to fight with Gol D. Roger one-on-one, the Whitebeard Pirates were considered amongst the strongest pirates known in the world of One Piece. More impressive is that the Whitebeard Pirates were able to hold their own against the Roger Pirates within their first decade of activity. Even the normally overconfident Buggy refused to attack Ace when he was asleep, fearing Whitebeard's wrath, as he witnessed Whitebeard's might firsthand while apprenticing under the Roger Pirates.

Due to their fearsome reputation, the World Government was prepared to use practically the entire Marine force and the Seven Warlords of the Sea to fight the crew after they announced Ace's execution. Even the 23 Marine ships that were supposed to be watching over the Moby Dick (Whitebeard's ship) were instantly wiped out as it started to move.[13] Also, the fact that the capture of Portgas D. Ace, a member of Whitebeard's crew, was considered such an amazing feat that it earned a place as a Warlord of the Sea for Marshall D. Teach (though Ace's capture meant a lot more than just being Whitebeard's subordinate, as he was also the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger's son).

According to Blackbeard, a general rule on-board Whitebeard's ship is that any crewmate who happens to find a Devil Fruit is free to consume it (which is why he killed Thatch in order to obtain the Yami Yami no Mi). A few of the Whitebeard Pirates already possess Devil Fruit powers, such as Marco, Ace, Jozu, and Blamenco. Just the same, some of the commanders who did not seem to have any Devil Fruit powers were still capable of fighting on par with individual Warlords of the Sea (Vista, Curiel).

Many of them seem to possess one or more forms of Haki, a technique their captain had mastered in all three forms. The fact that their names are well known by the Warlords of the Sea and admirals also gives an indication of their strength. As a matter of fact, even a Supernova-class pirate such as Luffy was considered to be "all talk" by Whitebeard (although this was prior to him releasing his Supreme King Haki). Sengoku stated that, with his Devil Fruit, Whitebeard would have been able to destroy the world. Another example of their strength is that the majority of the commanders were unharmed by the war.

The Whitebeard Commanders charging forward. The Whitebeard Commanders charging forward.

However, even taking their impressive displays of power into account, the Whitebeard Pirates are not, by any means, invulnerable and have suffered enormous losses: Prior to the Whitebeard War, 4th division commander Thatch was murdered by Marshall D. Teach, who desired the Devil Fruit that Thatch found, known as the Yami Yami no Mi. During the Summit War of Marineford, several of their flagships (including the Moby Dick) were destroyed either by cannon fire or in separate attacks from Akainu, numerous unnamed crew members lost their lives amidst the fierce fighting against the Marines, and several of the commanders were severely crippled in their attempt to save Ace. In the final stages of the battle, Admiral Akainu successfully executed 2nd division commander Portgas D. Ace, and soon afterwards, a grievously injured Whitebeard was ambushed by the collective Blackbeard Pirates and perished as a result before the remaining members of the crew were helped in escaping by the arrival of the Red Hair Pirates.

Even with their losses, the Whitebeard Pirates were still considered to be one of the strongest crews, with the Five Elders believing that they, along with the remaining Emperor crews, were among the few that may be able to stop the Blackbeard Pirates. Despite this belief, however, when the Whitebeard Pirates engaged Blackbeard and his crew in a battle to avenge the murder of their captain and fellow commanders, they were completely overwhelmed and brutally defeated. Thus, they lost most of their former territory to the Blackbeard Pirates after Teach claimed Whitebeard's position, while Charlotte Linlin claimed Fish-Man Island as her territory. The crew's current strength and whereabouts are unknown. The crew is also currently being hunted by Warlord of the Sea Edward Weevil and his mother Buckin, who are seeking to claim Whitebeard's fortune.

Aside from their own 1617-member crew, the Whitebeard Pirates have many subordinate crews from the New World. Each one of the pirate captains was an infamous pirate who had made a name for him or herself in the New World. There seemed to be at least 43 crews under Whitebeard's protection. Whitebeard treated all of his longtime subordinate crews just like his own crew: as though they were his own children. They all seemed to know Ace, at least, and were willing to help Whitebeard's cause when Ace was about to be executed at Marineford. However, they were not aware that Ace was Roger's son until around the time Ace died.

Whitebeard's subordinates charge into battle. Whitebeard's subordinates charge into battle.

Through Akainu, Sengoku managed to deceive Squard, an otherwise loyal subordinate captain, into stabbing Whitebeard with a lie that Whitebeard made a deal with the Marines in which his subordinate crews would be the only ones targeted by the Pacifista; this lie also spread amongst the other subordinate crews, leading to some doubt in their trust of Whitebeard. The plan, despite having successfully weakened Whitebeard, also backfired somewhat, as it gave Whitebeard the opportunity to prove to his subsidiaries who the real enemy was and spur the pirates onwards in their quest to rescue Ace.

An unknown number of these subsidiary crews were hit in the aftermath of Akainu's attack during the war. Others had also been taken down since the fighting began, including one of their most powerful subordinate captains: the giant, Oars Jr. After the war, the surviving subordinate captains and their crews accompanied the remaining Whitebeard Pirates in their burial of Ace and Whitebeard at an unknown New World island. Their current whereabouts and goals are unknown, though Edward Weevil is said to have taken out 16 of the subordinate crews, including A O. leaving, at most, 27 subordinate crews still active.[4]

An apparent trait of Whitebeard's subordinate crews is the usage of costumes that follow a theme. Also, the majority of them, similar to the Warlords of the Sea and CP9 agents, are animal-themed. Some of the subordinate captains are revealed to have been members of the main crew in the past.[14]

Allies Jinbe of the Seven Warlords of the Sea greatly respected Whitebeard for protecting Fish-Man Island and maintained a friendship with Ace, to the point that he was willing to lay his life down for either of them, even if it meant compromising his role with the World Government.

After Luffy saved Ace from his execution, Whitebeard came to value Luffy as an important ally after seeing his true potential and was willing to go as far as to put his faith in Luffy. After Ace and Whitebeard's deaths, the remaining Whitebeard Pirates put their lives on the line to prevent Akainu from killing Luffy; they even said that Ace's family was also their family as well.

Alongside Luffy were many Impel Down convicts who escaped from prison, including Emporio Ivankov, a Revolutionary Army commander, and Buggy, a former member of the Roger Pirates. All of these convicts were powerful people, and a majority of them fought against Whitebeard's opposition, which made them valuable assets to Whitebeard's cause. Whitebeard also proposed an alliance with Buggy, as he recognized the threat his new crew poses, though he saw Buggy himself as nothing threatening.

Advertisement History Past The Whitebeard Pirates 30 years ago. The Whitebeard Pirates 30 years ago.

38 years ago, Whitebeard left the Rocks Pirates after the death of his captain and then, at least 33 years ago, started recruiting.[15] Three years later, the Whitebeard Pirates were shipwrecked at the Kuri region of Wano Country after climbing the waterfall and losing their supplies. Before they could figure out their next course of action, Kouzuki Oden rushed to the scene and briefly clashed with Newgate, introducing himself and demanding to set sail with them.[14]

Afterwards, Whitebeard and his crew had a feast with Oden and his retainers. Oden kept asking to join only to be turned down. Two weeks later, the Whitebeard Pirates tried to leave Oden behind, but he caught up to them and held onto a chain he attached to the ship. Izou also held onto Oden and got dragged away with him. After pulling Izou up onto the ship, Whitebeard gave Oden a test. If he could hold onto the chain for three days, he would be allowed into the crew. Just when Oden only had ten minutes left, he heard a woman in trouble and let go, drifting to an island. On the next day, Whitebeard found Oden and a woman named Toki confronted by Karma and his crew. Whitebeard defeated Karma and finally allowed Oden to join his crew. Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, who had stowed away on Whitebeard's ship, joined the crew as well.[16]

Two years after Oden joined, Whitebeard decided to divide his crew at that time into five divisions and appointed Oden as commander of the second division. Sometime later, he traveled to a port and met Marshall D. Teach and granted his request to join the Whitebeard Pirates.[17]

Around 26 years ago, the Whitebeard Pirates clashed with the Roger Pirates for three days and three nights before the skirmish ultimately became a gift exchange. Afterwards, the Whitebeard Pirates parted ways with Oden and his family as well as Inuarashi and Nekomamushi.[18] Prior to Roger's execution, Whitebeard adopted Squard into his crew after the latter's own crew had been killed by Roger.[19] 22 years ago, former Rocks Pirate Shiki made contact with the Whitebeard Pirates, intent on striking a deal to combine their forces following Roger's death, though he was refused by Whitebeard.[20] Roughly two years later, the Whitebeard Pirates conquered part of the New World, taking many islands under their protection, including Fish-Man Island.[21]

Considering that and their captain's immense strength and infamy, the World Government labeled Whitebeard an Emperor. During that period, the crew also gained many powerful allies. Five years ago, Whitebeard read about Portgas D. Ace's increasing fame as the captain of the Spade Pirates and how Ace refused the offer of a Warlord of the Sea position. Right after the five-day fight between Ace and Jinbe, Whitebeard approached the Spade Pirates aboard the Moby Dick and told his own crew that he would deal with Ace alone.[22]

Whitebeard defeated both Ace and his crew and, aware of Ace's talent, drafted him into his crew, eventually allowing him to become commander of his Second Division.[23] Several years after he was killed, the Whitebeard Pirates heard about Oden's death at Kaidou's hand. Despite this, the Whitebeard Pirates did not invade Wano Country to take revenge, knowing that there would be many civilian casualties if they did so.[24] At another point, Whitebeard and his crew read news that Bartholomew Kuma was elected as the new Warlord of the Sea after Ace defeated a previous one six months prior.[25]

Advertisement East Blue Saga When Ace's younger brother Luffy earned his first bounty after defeating Arlong, Ace showed both Whitebeard and Jinbe his brother's wanted poster.[26] But then sometime after that, Teach, now apart of Ace's division, murdered the Fourth Division commander Thatch in order to acquire Yami Yami no Mi. Ace decided to hunt down Blackbeard by himself, even though Whitebeard did not want him to go because he felt uneasy about the situation.[27]

Arabasta Saga Drum Island Arc Ace decided to see how his brother Luffy was doing. On Drum Island he met two villagers and asked them about Luffy, introducing himself and mentioning his intention before leaving a wanted poster of Luffy and a message for Luffy to meet him in 10 days in the city of Nanohana, Arabasta.[1]

Arabasta Arc After a brief scuffle with Smoker, Ace handed Luffy a Vivre Card— before destroying a fleet of Baroque Works ships, with the card later being sewn to the inside of Luffy's hat's ribbon—so Luffy could later keep track of Ace's location and well-being.

Sky Island Saga Jaya Arc Whitebeard rejected a letter from "Red-Haired" Shanks, stating that if Shanks wished to speak with him he should do it in person. The World Government feared what would happen if their two crews were to meet due to the possibility of them joining forces, but chose to just observe their actions.[28]

Water 7 Saga Post-Enies Lobby Arc Shanks eventually arrived and after unwittingly knocking out dozens of the Whitebeard Pirates with Supreme King Haki, went to talk with Whitebeard about Ace and Teach after. Whitebeard talked about the past with Shanks' though when asked to stop Ace because he did not feel he was ready to face Blackbeard, Whitebeard laughed off the request, saying that he was 100 years too young to tell him what to do before telling him that Teach must be taught dealt. Claiming he had nothing to fear, Whitebeard clashed with Shanks, causing the heavens above to split.[29]

Advertisement Summit War Saga Marineford Arc After Ace chased down the traitor Marshall D. Teach and was defeated, he was sentenced to death at Marineford. As Ace's execution closed in, the entire Whitebeard Pirates, along with their 43 subordinate crews, came to Marineford and waged war against the 100,000 Marines and the five Warlords of the Sea that were present. Partway in, the prisoners of Impel Down arrived to give additional assistance, including people such as Ace's brother, Monkey D. Luffy.

The Moby Dick's demise. The Moby Dick's demise.

As the war waged on, the encircling walls were raised, and in the following moments, the Moby Dick was sunk by Admiral Akainu's Meteor Volcano, and another of Whitebeard's ships was sunk by Akainu's Great Eruption. Many crew members were killed or injured, and several of the commanders were severely incapacitated, including Marco being pierced repeatedly by Admiral Kizaru's lasers, Jozu being frozen solid by Admiral Aokiji, and Curiel being burned and defeated by Admiral Akainu. Whitebeard himself had been severely injured by a deceived Squard before he even jumped into battle, where he was then further wounded by Akainu and several Vice Admirals and Marine officers. He eventually entrusted the rescue mission to Luffy, ordering his subordinates to lend their strength to him, which led to Ace's freedom from the scaffold. However, the victory was short-lived, as their first notable casualty in the war was confirmed with the death of Portgas D. Ace by Akainu's hand. A near-dead and isolated Whitebeard was then killed by the collective Blackbeard Pirates. The rest of the Whitebeard Pirates then prepared to fight against Akainu, who was pursuing a heartbroken Luffy. Upon the Red Hair Pirates' arrival, Shanks ceased the war, stating that the Marines had completed their objective, and any more fighting would have resulted in needless bloodshed. Ace and Whitebeard's bodies were taken by their friends for a proper burial, while their own hearts were grieving at their losses.

Post-War Arc Ace's and Newgate's graves. Ace's and Newgate's graves.

With the help of Shanks's crew, the Whitebeard Pirates buried their two deceased superiors and comrades on Whitebeard's homeland in the New World; Whitebeard and Ace's graves towered over the place, and there were swords and flowers all around the tombs as a tribute. Ace's grave has his signature hat, knife, and beads (the first two retrieved somehow despite him losing them in his battle with Blackbeard), while Whitebeard's is marked with his bisento with his coat hanging from it and his flag tied to the top. The rest of the crew stood on either side of the island en masse, paying their last respects as Shanks left.

Right after the war, many of Whitebeard's territories were also annexed by other pirates. Foodvalten was conquered by the Brownbeard Pirates until Basil Hawkins defeated the latter.

As Blackbeard made his move through the New World with his thorough knowledge of Whitebeard's territories, the Five Elders remarked that the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates, notably Marco the Phoenix, are one of the forces capable of stopping him.[30]

When one year was passed after Whitebeard and Ace's deaths, a war had broken out between the Blackbeard and Whitebeard Pirates. It was called the "Payback War", in which both sides brought their full forces and it ended with the Whitebeard Pirates losing considerably. After the war is when Blackbeard started being acknowledged as one of the Four Emperors.[31]

Legacy Two years after the Summit War of Marineford have passed, Sabo left a newspaper of the Straw Hat Pirates' return at Ace's and Newgate's graves. After usurping Whitebeard's status as an Emperor, Blackbeard conquered most of Whitebeard's territories. However, Fish-Man Island is now under the protection of the Big Mom Pirates.

During the raid on Onigashima, two of the former commanders, Marco and Izou, went to Wano Country in order to assist the Straw Hat Pirates against Kaidou.[32][33] Although they were successful with helping the battle and avenging Oden, Izou was killed.[34]

Anime and Manga Differences Whitebeard Pirates Original Jolly Roger The original Jolly Roger Revised Whitebeard Pirates Jolly Roger The changed Jolly Roger In the manga, the crew's Jolly Roger was originally a mustached skull mounted on a manji, as seen in the Arabasta Arc, the Jaya Arc, and Ace's Great Blackbeard Search. This symbol, an ancient religious mark that continues to be popular across Asia as a sign of divinity and peace, was infamously appropriated into Nazi Germany's Hakenkreuz emblem, inextricably linking it to white supremacy and hate speech and causing many nations to legally limit or forbid its depiction (though it should be noted that the conventional Japanese manji is bent in a counterclockwise 卍, as opposed to the Hakenkreuz's clockwise 卐).

To avoid controversy, the anime redesigned the Jolly Roger into the currently-known crossbones version from its very first appearance.[35] While this was followed by all known tie-ins, the manga continued to use the manji design up until the Post-Enies Lobby Arc in 2006, when Shueisha directly ordered Eiichiro Oda to replace it with the crossbones design.[36] Afterwards, Shueisha retroactively edited the crossbones design into all releases—physical and digital—of the Whitebeard Pirates' earlier appearances as well.

The Revolutionary Army is a military organization founded and led by Monkey D. Dragon.

Originally known as the Freedom Fighters before assuming their current name, they are the most prominent force in the world that directly opposes the World Government and seeks to dismantle it.[4][5] They are particularly against the World Nobles of Mary Geoise who control and benefit from the corruption of the World Government.[6] The Army and its members have repeatedly assisted the Straw Hat Pirates.[7][8][9][10]

Their former base of operations was the island of Baltigo,[11] but after an intensive battle with the Blackbeard Pirates,[3] they relocated to Momoiro Island, home of the Kamabakka Kingdom.[2]

These small revolutions become easier if the World Government or its affiliates are in disarray or if the local population is willing to depose their rulers.[14] According to Koala, their true purpose is to overthrow the tyrannical and hedonistic World Nobles as well as the monarchies that suppo
