Powers

• Stepping Discs: She has the mutant ability to mentally control "Stepping Discs", which allowed herself and others to teleport across interstellar distances, through time or the multiverse. The discs are part of a dimension known as Limbo. When Illyana mentally calls for a Stepping Disc she must use Limbo as a midway point before she can teleport to an alternate location. It is not known if she was genetically predetermined to travel through Limbo, or if she did so because, having been spirited there as a child, it was the alternate dimension she was instinctively aware of. Magik has succeeded in teleporting herself across small distances, from one continent to another, and even interplanetary and intergalactic distances on occasion. Apparently, she can mentally scan Limbo while on Earth in order to locate whoever she wishes to teleport from Limbo down to her, on Earth.

• Time Traveling: Unlike most other teleporters, Magik could teleport through time as well as space. She has teleported moments, days or centuries into the past or future. Especially, early on, she had difficulty modulating this ability and would often inadvertently travel through time and space when intending to teleport only through space. Magik was told by Dr. Strange that she had the potential for great feats of manipulating time on a wider scale.

• Sorcery: Magik was the Sorceress Supreme of her Limbo dimension. The extent of her powers there are all-powerful and the demons of Limbo did not dare challenge her. Magik had access to Belasco's store of mystical knowledge. Magik's sorcery was a unique mix of black magic, that she learned from Belasco, and white magic, taught by an alternative-reality Ororo Munroe. She was considered as a possible Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, and as an adult has trained with Doctor Strange.

• Energy Manipulation: Illyana can project powerful energy blasts. She also used an energy manipulation spell to manipulate the energy the advanced Sentinels were wielding, causing them to destroy each other by redirecting the energy and exploding themselves. The spell was called "Julani's spell of energy manipulation" from the Scrolls of Agamotto.

• Summoning: Magik can store her Soulsword in nothingness and summon it whenever she desires. She also summoned a giant, demonic Hydra to fight for her. Another impressive feat that Illyana displayed was when she rescued Cyclops from his prison cell. To do this, she summoned giant demon hands from the ground that rose up and destroyed an entire reinforced prison bunker wall.

• Astral Projection: Illyana possess the ability to project her spirit or astral body out of her physical body in order to travel into the spirit world or the astral plane.

• Protection Spell: Illyana was able to cast a protection spell around Danielle Moonstar's operating room. The spell effect transformed Illyana into pure energy, allowing her to take a portion of her living self and form a protective wall around the surgery.

• Binding: Illyana can bind and stop someone from moving with her magic.

• Exorcism Spell: When Roberto and Rahne were possessed by Cloak and Dagger's powers respectively, Illyana was able to use an exorcism spell to purifying Roberto and Rahne's soul, and restore the power to Tandy and Tyrone.

• Scrying: While in Limbo, Illyana used a scrying spell that manifested as three mirrors together to see what was happening on Earth.

• Matter Manipulation: Illyana was also able to use a matter manipulation to change her clothes and that of the New Mutants, she has even stated to matter manipulate and transmute other living and non living.

• Shield Spell: Illyana used a defensive shield spell from the Book of the Vishanti that she'd memorized, called the Vishanti Personal Shield of Defense, from page 422. She also used a spell she'd memorized from the Scrolls of Agamotto to protect her and Magneto.

• Soul Manipulation: Magik possesses the ability to perceive, affect, manipulate, and interact with souls on both physical and metaphysical levels. This power allows her to sense the condition of souls, alter their spiritual state, affect the connection between body and soul, and interact directly with spiritual entities that exist beyond the material plane. Her control over souls can be used for a variety of mystical purposes, including spiritual combat, soul based attacks, protection against supernatural influences, and the manipulation of spiritual energies. Due to her extensive magical knowledge and status as the ruler of Limbo, Magik’s soul-affecting abilities are particularly potent against demonic and mystical beings, allowing her to contend with threats that exist on both physical and spiritual levels, and can destroy souls via the soul sword.

• Curse manipulation: Magik is capable of creating, shaping, and controlling curses as a form of advanced sorcery and demonic half. She can impose supernatural afflictions that affect a target’s physical body, mind, soul, or magical essence, manifesting as decay, misfortune, emotional instability, weakened abilities, or disruption of cursed mystical energies.

• Limbo Control: Magik's Limbo, also known as Otherplace, was not a void as such, but rather an endless dimension that is tenuously connected to True Limbo, where time does not pass in a physical sense and as a result, no one can age or die. The matter within Magik's Limbo could be shaped and transformed by the thoughts and emotions of the sorcerer who is its master. Limbo can also be accessed throughout the omniverse, and was stated that it could be the cause of an omniversal war, in limbo magik can use the hell relam to reality warp to her will.

• Mystical Armor: The more that Magik uses her magical power on any occasion, the more mystical armor appears on her body. The nature and origin of this armor is as yet unknown. Along with the armor, Magik's appearance would become more demonic including horns, hooves, or a tail. The mystical armor is a natural power of whoever rules in Limbo.

• Darkchylde: Magik can draw upon the power of her other half to freely transform into a stronger, demonic version of herself, which gives her powerful demonic abilities which are vast, more specifically hell Fire Manipulation.

• Psionic Shields: She has impenetrable psionic shields, most likely a result of the time she spent in Limbo and the effects of her partially demonic soul. As such even powerful telepaths such as Charles Xavier, David Haller, Emma Frost, and Rachel Summers could not mentally read Illyana's thoughts or sense her psionically.

Abilities

• Magik is highly skilled in the black magic of Limbo granted by the patron of Belasco, Chthon, as well as white magic of Earth granted by the patron of Storm's lineage Oshtur. Illyana is also highly skilled in ancient weaponry, typically axes and swords. Even without her Soulsword, she led an attack on hordes of rebelling demons using only an axe without suffering any injuries and succeeding in quelling their rebellion.

• Multilingual: Native Russian born Illyana was telepathically taught fluent English by Professor X over the course of a single night by programming it into her brain while she slept. She also speaks the demonic script.

• Mystical Limitations: Magik's magical abilities are far more limited in Earth's dimension. She did not formally train as a sorcerer on Earth when younger, so does not fully understand her powers and is ignorant of even some basic concepts of Earth magic.

Illyana Rasputina is a young mutant who has spent much of her life surviving circumstances that forced her to grow up far faster than she should have. She possesses a hard exterior and rarely allows others to see how deeply she cares about them. Illyana is blunt and direct, often answering questions with dry sarcasm or an unexpectedly sharp remark rather than wasting time on unnecessary politeness. She has an intense willpower and refuses to be controlled, manipulated, or treated as helpless. Despite her intimidating demeanor, Illyana is fiercely protective of the people she considers family and will put herself in danger without hesitation to protect them. She is comfortable with darkness and has little patience for naïveté, but she has not lost her capacity for compassion. Illyana carries herself with quiet confidence and prefers proving herself through action rather than seeking approval from others.

• Romance: Illyana does not fall easily, and she makes no effort to pretend otherwise. Her walls are not coy or theatrical — they are structural, built across years in Limbo where softness was a liability and trust was something demons used against you. If she is interested in someone, they will know through the way she occupies space differently around them, through dry remarks carrying warmth buried three layers underneath, through the simple fact that she keeps showing up. She dislikes unnecessary sentimentality and has a physical reaction to being possessed or managed. A partner who carries their own spine, their own silence that does not need filling, will discover a loyalty so absolute it borders on frightening. She will not say I love you easily or first, but she will step between someone she loves and everything that means them harm without hesitation, and she considers that the more honest declaration.

Background and Story

• Illyana Rasputina was born on a collective farm near Lake Baikal in Siberia, the youngest sibling of Piotr Rasputin — Colossus — who joined the X-Men when she was still a small child. After a kidnapping by the villain Arcade was resolved, Colossus arranged for Illyana to stay at Xavier's School, believing she would be safer under the X-Men's supervision than left vulnerable in Russia. That safety proved temporary. While in the X-Men's custody, she was abducted by the demon sorcerer Belasco and dragged into Limbo, where she spent seven years — years that passed in mere seconds on Earth — as his captive and reluctant student. In that time she learned sorcery from an alternate-reality Storm, forged the Soulsword from a piece of her own soul, wrested control of Limbo from Belasco, and emerged on the other side a teenager with a Darkchylde living in the marrow of everything she was. She joined the New Mutants upon her return, and while friendships there helped, the darkness Limbo had carved into her never fully healed.

• Years of struggling with S'ym and the demons of Limbo eventually culminated in the Inferno event, when the demon N'astirh manipulated Illyana into forcing open a portal that allowed a full-scale demonic invasion of New York City. To stop it and undo what she had become, Illyana used her mutant abilities to retroactively erase her own existence as Magik, sacrificing years of hard-won power and identity to close the invasion as if it had never occurred. She emerged from the enchantment as the six-year-old child she had been before Belasco — no magic, no Soulsword, a soul finally intact. She returned briefly to her family in Russia, and then the Legacy Virus took her life in the X-Mansion, a quiet death that ended what had been anything but a quiet childhood.

• Illyana remained absent, when Belasco's attempts to resurrect her produced only the soulless Darkchylde — Magik without the girl inside her. She fought her way back regardless, defeated Belasco, reclaimed Limbo, and returned to Earth during X-Infernus, where her brother and former teammates insisted she stay. She rejoined the New Mutants but continued distancing herself from both the team and her own humanity, eventually being imprisoned by Cyclops for choices he considered reckless — though he still kept her on his Extinction Team, operating in the field while confined to the brig between missions. During Avengers vs. X-Men she became one of the Phoenix Five, the cosmic power altering and destabilizing her magic in ways she was still working to understand when Cyclops fell and the team scattered. She briefly followed Cyclops to the New Xavier School, but when the Phoenix's interference began destroying Limbo from within, she resolved the crisis herself and ultimately returned to the X-Mansion — not because anyone asked her to, and not to prove anything, but because her brother was there and the people she was willing to bleed for were there, and that, for Illyana, has always been enough.
