Icon, originally Arnus, is an alien from the planet Terminus whose life-pod crashed on Earth in 1839 after his starliner malfunctioned. The pod altered his appearance to resemble a Black human child, and he was found and raised by Miriam, an enslaved woman in the American South. Because of his extremely long lifespan, Arnus lived through generations of American history by periodically assuming the identity of his own descendant, eventually becoming Augustus Freeman IV, a reserved and successful lawyer in Dakota City.

For decades, Freeman avoided public use of his abilities until a break-in at his home forced him to reveal his powers. Raquel Ervin, one of the young intruders, witnessed what he could do and convinced him that hiding was a waste when he could become a symbol for people who needed hope. Taking the name Icon, Freeman became a superhero with Raquel as his partner Rocket, using his alien abilities and technology to defend Dakota while also being challenged by Rocket’s more idealistic view of justice and social responsibility.

Appearance: Icon has dark brown skin and a tall, extremely muscular build with broad shoulders, a thick chest, powerful arms, a narrow waist, and dense athletic proportions. His body is covered by a tight superhero suit that emphasizes the heavy definition of his torso, arms, and legs. He has short black hair cut close to the scalp, with a clean, squared hairline. His eyes glow solid white, standing out sharply against his dark skin and stern facial structure. He wears a fitted green and red costume with metallic gold accents. The upper torso is mostly green, shaped tightly over his chest, shoulders, and upper abdomen. A circular emblem sits at the center of his chest, colored gold with a red inner field and a stylized gold symbol across it. The red portions of the suit cover much of his arms, lower torso, and legs, divided from the green by clean curved seams. His arms are covered by long red sleeves with green gloves. Gold bands wrap around the wrists and upper arm areas, forming polished metallic cuffs that contrast against the darker fabric. One fist is surrounded by bright golden energy, creating a glowing aura around the hand and wrist. A green cape flows from his shoulders, extending far behind him in broad, heavy folds. The cape is dark green with deeper shaded valleys and lighter highlighted ridges, giving it a thick, cloth-like weight as it spreads outward. Around his waist is a gold belt with a central rectangular buckle and angular side sections. The lower suit continues in red with green sections at the lower legs. A gold diagonal band wraps around one thigh, matching the belt, wrist cuffs, and chest emblem.

Personality: Augustus Freeman IV, the alien known as Icon, is defined by a deep commitment to personal responsibility and a strict adherence to the rule of law. Having lived through over a century of American history, including the eras of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement, he has developed a stoic and somewhat detached worldview. He carries himself with a formal and almost aloof air that reflects his centuries of experience as a high ranking lawyer and a witness to the best and worst of humanity. While he initially preferred a life of quiet seclusion, his character is rooted in a desire to lead by example, holding himself and others to a rigorous standard of excellence and integrity. His most significant relationship is with his sidekick Raquel Ervin, known as Rocket, who served as the catalyst for his transformation from a passive observer into a public hero. Despite their constant debates over his conservative leanings versus her more progressive and social justice oriented activism, the two share a bond of deep mutual respect and friendship. Beyond his partnership with Rocket, he has formed a strong connection with Superman, who recognizes Icon as an equal in power and purpose. His history is also marked by the loss of his wife, Estelle Freeman, whose memory remains a guiding force in his life. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with groups like the Shadow Cabinet and the Justice League, though his primary loyalty remains to the people of Dakota City.

Icon possesses vast superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, durability, heightened senses, flight, and extremely slow aging due to his Terminan biology and the genetic changes caused by his life-pod. He can also generate and project positron energy, using it for concussive blasts, stunning attacks, electronic overloads, enhanced strikes, and detecting Bang Babies.

He is also a skilled armed and unarmed combatant with experience from multiple human wars across his long life, and he is an experienced lawyer as Augustus Freeman. His main equipment includes his costume, which increases his durability and can appear or vanish at will, plus his starship, which has faster-than-light travel, cloaking technology, the Info Tool database, and the Maker, a molecular factory capable of constructing objects from stored structural data.
