Late one night, Felix was walking home from the market when he noticed three men cornering a young stranger.
"Give us your money."
The stranger froze, clearly having no idea how to defend himself.
Felix sighed, setting down his basket.
"Leave him alone."
He stepped between them, unaware that the frightened stranger was actually Crown Prince Hyunjin, who had secretly fled the palace that very night.
Hyunjin stared at Felix, stunned that someone had risked helping him without even knowing who he was.
Neither of them knew it yet, but this chance encounter would change everything.

In Joseon, a person's wealth decided much of life they would enjoy.
For Felix, that life had never been particularly kind.
He had grown up in a small hanok on the outskirts of the capital, where the wooden walls creaked whenever the wind grew strong and his mother carefully counted every coin before buying rice. His father had died when Felix was young, leaving his mother to raise him and his little sister alone.
Felix had learned early that childhood was a luxury his family could rarely afford.
By eighteen, his hands were already rough from work.
Every morning, before the sun had properly risen, Felix would make his way toward the market. He carried baskets, unloaded goods, swept stalls, and helped merchants wherever an extra pair of hands was needed. It wasn't glamorous, but it put food on the table.
And Felix never complained.
There was something strangely bright about him despite the life he'd been given.
His soft blond hair was an unusual sight among the dark-haired crowds of the capital, while warm brown eyes and freckles scattered over his cheeks made him difficult to forget. People sometimes called him pretty when they thought he couldn't hear them.
Felix never believed them.
What good was a pretty face when his family still had to worry about tomorrow's meal?
So he worked.
He worked because his mother needed him.
He worked because his little sister looked at him like he could fix anything.
And, secretly, he worked because he dreamed that one day he could give them a life where they didn't have to count every handful of rice.
Across the city, behind the enormous gates of the royal palace, lived someone whose life could not have been more different.
Prince Hyunjin had never known hunger.
He had known silk.
He had known servants who bowed when he entered a room, tutors who waited patiently for him to finish his lessons, and courtiers who measured every word before speaking.
He had grown up surrounded by beauty.
Yet somehow, he had always felt trapped inside it.
The palace had been his home since childhood, but its walls seemed to grow taller with every passing year.
Hyunjin was nineteen.
He wanted to see the city.
He wanted to walk through the markets without ten people watching him. He wanted to eat something bought from a street stall. He wanted to laugh loudly without someone reminding him of his position.
Most of all, he wanted to experience the ordinary life he had spent his entire childhood hearing about.
But a Crown Prince was not allowed an ordinary life.
His father, the King, reminded him constantly of the responsibility waiting on his shoulders. His mother reminded him of the dignity expected from a future ruler. Court officials reminded him that every decision he made reflected upon the royal family.
And then, one evening, Hyunjin was informed that preparations had begun for his marriage.
Another decision had been made for him.
Another piece of his future had been placed neatly into someone else's hands.
That night, Hyunjin sat beside his window long after everyone had left.
The moonlight stretched across his chamber.
For once, the palace didn't look beautiful.
It looked like a prison.
So Hyunjin did something reckless.
He ran.
He traded his fine robes for plain clothing, concealed a small amount of money beneath his clothes, and slipped beyond the palace grounds under the cover of darkness.
His heart raced.
For the first time in his life, nobody was telling him where to go.
He smiled.
He was free.
At least, he thought he was.
The streets became quieter as he wandered farther from the palace. Hyunjin had never walked through the city alone before, and his unfamiliarity soon became obvious.
Then three men stepped into his path.
Hyunjin stopped.
They noticed his expensive-looking shoes. The quality of his clothing. The small pouch at his waist.
He suddenly realized his mistake.
"Give us everything you got."
Hyunjin's confidence disappeared.
He had never been in a fight. He had never needed to be.
The palace had always protected him.
But there was no palace here.
No guards.
No servants.
Just him.
And then another voice cut through the darkness.
"Hey."
The men turned.
Felix stood a short distance away, carrying an empty market basket against his hip.
He had been on his way home.
He should have kept walking.
He knew that.
But something about the frightened young man caught his attention.
Felix set the basket down.
"Leave him alone."
Hyunjin stared at him.
He didn't know this boy.
He didn't know that Felix had spent his entire life struggling to survive.
Felix didn't know that the frightened stranger standing before him was the Crown Prince of Joseon.
They were two boys who should never have crossed paths.
One had been born with everything except freedom.
The other had been born with almost nothing except it.
And somehow, on one quiet night in 1880, their worlds collided.
((Your Felix 💛))
