The morning sun struck the pristine, floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Aurelia Conservatory of Fine Arts, casting a blinding glare across the manicured courtyard. Perfect students in tailored navy blazers and pressed pleats glided along the stone paths, cradling multimillion-dollar Stradivarius violins and gold-plated flutes like sacred relics. The air smelled of old money, expensive espresso, and suffocating expectation. It was a normal Tuesday, which meant the hierarchy of high society was in full, crushing effect.
Down in the concrete underbelly of the east wing, far beneath the soundproofed chambers where prodigies practiced classical sonatas, the heavy thud of a low-frequency rumble vibrated through the floorboards. Hyun sat on an overturned equipment crate, his thumb methodically digging into the thick strings of his matte-black bass guitar. His dark, jagged bangs fell completely over his left eye, hiding the dark circles of a boy who stayed up until 3:00 AM rewriting chord progressions. He wore the school’s uniform blazer, but it was heavily modified—the pristine fabric torn at the lapels and held together by safety pins, a silent middle finger to the dean's dress code.
Suddenly, a loud, screeching wail cut through the bass line as User plugged in a battered Gibson Les Paul. Adjusting the straps and tossing back a mane of messy, unbrushed blond hair, the lead guitarist gave the strings an aggressive slap to test the distortion. User was already sporting a fresh, purplish bruise right across the cheekbone from a brawl in the alley behind the dining hall the previous afternoon. As the undisputed leader of this misfit syndicate, User rarely let an insult from a classical elitist slide, preferring to let fists do the talking when words failed.
Hyun didn't lift his head, but a soft, rare smile tugged at the corner of his pierced lip as he watched User tuning up. He reached out with a pale, ring-clad hand, lightly tapping the toe of User’s scuffed combat boot with his own. The two had been dating since the previous semester, finding a strange, fierce sanctuary in each other amidst a sea of trust-fund snobs who viewed them as dirt on the conservatory’s polished marble floors. In this basement, the bruised cheek and the frayed blazers didn't matter; they were the only real things in a school full of porcelain dolls.
Breaking the quiet intimacy of the couple, a soaring vocal warm-up echoed from the back of the studio, cutting clean through the ambient feedback. V leaned against the concrete wall, her arms crossed carelessly over a band tee she’d pulled on over her school blouse. She possessed a set of pipes that could easily shatter glass or command an opera house, but she chose to use her terrifying vocal range to belt out gritty, guttural rock anthems that made the faculty shudder. She flashed a wicked grin at User, her sharp eyes scanning the room with the restless energy of a caged panther.
Behind the massive, double-bass drum kit sat her twin brother, Makar, who looked completely unfazed by the chaos brewing around him. Spinning a pair of heavy hickory drumsticks between his fingers with effortless grace, he was the absolute anchor of the group. While his sister was fireworks and User was a ticking time bomb, Makar was a calm sea, casually chewing a piece of mint gum as he waited for the cue to start. He gave the snare a light, crisp tap, signaling that he was locked in and ready to drop a beat.
Before they could even launch into their first song, the heavy metal door of the basement studio flew open with a resounding bang, shattering their sanctuary. Standing in the doorway was Julian Vance, the school's star cellist, flanked by two towering brass majors who looked like they belonged on a rowing team rather than an orchestra. Julian adjusted his silk tie, his nose upturned in disgust as he stared down at the alt-rock outcasts. "Are you sewer rats seriously making that racket during the morning honors seminar?" Julian sneered, stepping inside. "Some of us actually have a future in real music."
User didn't even hesitate, dropping the neck of the Gibson and stepping forward with fists immediately clenching at his sides. Hyun stood up instantly, his tall, lanky frame casting a shadow, his hand instinctively gripping the neck of his bass like a club just in case things went south. Julian scoffed, taking a tactical step back behind his large friends. "Look at you, User, always looking for a fight," Julian mocked, pointing at the fresh bruise on the guitarist's face. "You’re a stain on this academy. You don't belong here, and everyone knows it."
The tension in the room snapped when Julian reached out and dismissively shoved User’s shoulder, trying to force him out of the doorway. That was the exact moment User’s patience expired. With a sharp curse, User launched forward, a fist flying straight into Julian’s arrogant jaw with a sickening crack. The star cellist stumbled backward into his brass-playing cronies, yelping in pure shock as blood began to smudge his perfect porcelain teeth.
Instantly, the basement dissolved into a chaotic blur of flying limbs and shouting. One of the large brass majors lunged at User, but Hyun moved like a shadow, throwing his entire body weight into a tackle that sent the prep-school jock crashing directly into a stack of empty amplifier boxes. Makar didn't even get out of his drum throne; he simply leaned back, watched the brawl unfold with wide eyes, and kept spinning his drumsticks like he was watching a mildly entertaining television show.
V, on the other hand, let out a loud, theatrical cheer, jumping onto a speaker cabinet to get a better view of the carnage. "Left hook, User! Lay him out!" she screamed, her powerful voice echoing off the concrete walls like a stadium announcer. She loved the chaos, completely unbothered by the fact that they were almost certainly going to get suspended, detained, or worse if the dean caught them.
By the time the fight fizzled out a few minutes later, the three preppy intruders were scrambling back up the concrete stairs, bruised, disheveled, and swearing revenge. Julian was holding a handkerchief to his bleeding nose, his pristine uniform ruined. User stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily, knuckles raw and a fresh cut swelling up right over his eyebrow to match the bruise on his cheek.
Hyun walked over immediately, letting his bass hang from its strap as he gently grabbed User by the wrists to check his raw knuckles. His dark eyes were full of a quiet, fierce protectiveness, though his voice remained low and steady. "You need to stop letting them bait you," Hyun murmured softly, though there was no real heat in his words. He pulled a slightly crumpled tissue from his pocket, gently dabbing at the trickle of blood near User’s eye with a tenderness that contrasted sharply with his harsh, emo exterior.
User just laughed it off, wincing slightly as Hyun cleaned the cut but refusing to show any real pain. V hopped down from the speaker, clapping her hands together in absolute delight. "Man, I would pay actual tuition money to see Julian's face when he tries to play his Bach suite with a swollen jaw today," she cackled, throwing her arm around Makar’s shoulders. Makar just shook his head, a faint, amused smirk playing on his lips as he spat his gum into a wrapper.
"Alright, the warm-up is over," Makar said, his voice smooth and entirely relaxed as he settled back into his posture behind the drums. "Are we actually going to play some music today, or are we just going to keep redecorating the walls with Julian's blood?" He raised his sticks, clicking them together four times in a steady, unyielding tempo that demanded they get back to business.
User stepped back over to the Gibson, strapping it on and flipping the toggle switch back to the lead channel. Hyun walked back to his rig, his fingers instantly finding the heavy, dark rhythm that locked perfectly into Makar’s opening kick-drum beat. The anger and adrenaline from the hallway altercation immediately melted away, channeled directly into the raw, distorted frequencies shaking the amps.
When V finally stepped up to the microphone, she didn't sing the delicate, classical melodies the Aurelia Conservatory forced upon them in class. She let out a gritty, soulful rasp that commanded the room, her voice weaving seamlessly between User’s roaring guitar riffs and Hyun’s thumping bass lines. They were loud, they were aggressive, and they were completely out of place in a school built on centuries of stiff tradition.
Upstairs in the grand hallway, the vibrations from the basement caused the crystal chandeliers to tremble slightly, a subtle disturbance that made the passing violin prodigies stop and frown in confusion. The administrators always talked about silencing the noise from the east wing basement, but they could never quite find a way to evict the soul of the school.
Down below, the four outcasts played on, completely indifferent to the wealthy world above them. User caught Hyun’s eye through the smoke and the dim lighting of the studio, the two sharing a knowing, unspoken look as the music swelled around them. They were bruised, they were hated, and they were completely broke compared to everyone else on campus. But as long as the amplifiers were hot and the drums were loud, they owned the place.
As the final chord echoed and died out against the concrete walls, the four of them stood in the ringing silence, sweating and slightly breathless. User wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, looking at his raw knuckles and then back to the group. It was only 10:30 AM on a Tuesday, and they still had a whole afternoon of snobbish stares and discipline committees to look forward to. But for now, the basement belonged entirely to them.
