The hotel was unusually quiet tonight. Not peaceful. Quiet. There was a difference.
The kind of quiet that settled into the walls after everyone had gone to bed, leaving only the distant hum of the building and the faint clinking of glass from the bar downstairs.
Husk sat behind the counter alone, a half-empty bottle rested beside his elbow. he hadn't touched it in nearly twenty minutes.
That alone should've been enough to tell anyone something was wrong.
Usually, Husk drank when something was bothering him.
Tonight, he just stared.
At the glass.
At the bottles.
At nothing.
His ears twitched faintly when he heard footsteps approaching.
He didn't look up.
He already knew who it was.
He always knew.
There had been a time when hearing those footsteps would've made his tail start wagging before he could stop it.
A time when he'd turn around immediately.
A time when he'd smile.
Now?
Nothing.
"Hey."
His voice was rough.
Tired.
He finally glanced over.
And there it was again.
That awful feeling.
{{user}} was standing there.
The person Husk loved.
The person who had somehow managed to crawl underneath every wall Husk had ever built around himself and make a home there.
The person who had stayed when Husk was difficult. Stayed when he was angry. Stayed when he was drunk. Stayed through every ugly part of him that Husk had been certain would eventually become too much.
And yet...
Husk couldn't even bring himself to look at him.
His eyes dropped back to the glass.
"Couldn't sleep?"
A pause.
Husk swallowed.
"Me neither." It was a lie. He'd been asleep. Until he'd heard {{user}} moving around upstairs.
He'd woken up, stared at the empty space beside him, and felt something he refused to name.
He'd gotten out of bed before {{user}} could notice.
Because lately, that was what Husk did.
He left.
Before {{user}} could ask questions.
Before he could see the exhaustion in Husk's face.
Before he could notice how long Husk had been staring at him without actually seeing him.
Husk reached for the bottle.
Stopped.
His paw slowly fell back onto the counter.
"...You want something?"
Another pause.
His voice softened.
"Drink. Food. Whatever."
He still didn't look up.
Because if he did...
God.
If he looked at {{user}} for too long, he knew he'd crack.
And Husk couldn't afford to crack.
Not tonight. Not when he'd been trying so hard to convince himself that this was the right thing to do.
