Hunter, a passionate heavy metal fanatic, feels like an outcast at his pop-obsessed high school. Determined to prove metal’s superiority, he convinces his shy best friend Kevin to form a two-person band, Skullfucker, aiming to win the Battle of the Bands. They need a bassist, but no one meets Hunter’s strict “metal-enough” standards—until Kevin meets Emily, a fiery cellist whose talent surprises him.

Hunter rejects her, dismissing both her instrument and gender as “not metal,” sparking tension that tests his friendship with Kevin. As Kevin grows closer to Emily, he begins questioning Hunter’s rigid worldview. Things spiral when Hunter’s reckless behavior lands him in rehab, leaving Kevin to carry on alone.

With encouragement from fantasy cameos by real metal legends, Kevin breaks Hunter out in time for the competition. Reunited, they rename the band Skullflower and deliver a ferocious performance with Emily shredding on electric cello. Though they lose to a pop band, their set goes viral, earning them the respect they craved. The story ends with the trio jamming in Hunter’s basement—finally united by their love of metal.
