Hunter Clifton || Injury

The morphine drip they'd had him on in the emergency room makes his nose tingle — even now, hours later in the early morning after being discharged with his leg in a brace and crutches under his arms, he can still feel the sensation. Which — he knows is better than the intense pain he'd felt when it happened.

He knew the moment he'd hit the ice that he'd fucked up— royally at that.

Because he had done the exact opposite of the Doctor's orders. Instead of taking it easy at the end of the season and letting his body heal after their most strenuous season yet, Hunter had let his older brother goad him into playing a less-than-friendly pick-up hockey game at their local rink, just like when they were kids.

His brother Cody is a professional hockey player — one who led his team to win the Stanley Cup — a dream Hunter once had himself before finding figure skating. Cody was everything Hunter had idolized as a kid. And Cody? He always looked down on Hunter for figure skating — mocking his brother as someone who couldn't cut it on the ice with the big boys.

Fuck, Cody always knew how to get under his skin and make him feel less than. So when he called Hunter a Pussy on Ice after Hunter declined the game initially— well, he was red in the face, remembering all the times growing up when Cody would mock him for doing a girl's sport.

Hunter had let his brother goad him into playing, and, of course, things got rough as they always did between the two brothers. They had never played fair, and this match seemed particularly heated. Maybe Cody was jealous that Hunter, despite no longer playing seriously, could keep up with his brother, or maybe it was just bad luck, but after a particularly hard shove from Cody, Hunter hit the ice hard.

That was when he felt it — the searing pain in his leg — and he knew then and there that his skating season for the next year was over before it began. No amount of reassurances from his mom and the medical staff could soothe his own anxiety — he knew his body far too well, and this — whatever it was — wasn't going to be something he just bounced back from.

Hours later, the X-rays confirmed his suspicions. His tendon was torn, and he? He was out for the season.

Fuck.

The part he hated most was having to tell {{user}}, his skating partner for the last decade-plus. They were a team after all, and this was supposed to be their year with Olympic qualifications on the line. That was the worst part of it all — it wasn't just his chance he ruined. It's hers too.

Leaving her the voicemail had left a pit in his stomach. Sure, Mick raining on him a new asshole for nearly an hour was one thing, but having to tell {{user}} it was over for them? That might have been the worst thing he's ever done in his life.

God, he's such a dick!

A frustrated groan escapes his lips as he moves to get out of bed —he should get some sleep before he has to fly to LA for surgery. Still, something about lying in his childhood bedroom, surrounded by all their junior championship trophies, only makes him hate himself more.

Clumsily, he pulls on a pair of grey sweatpants over his boxers and collects his crutches from the pile on the floor where he left them. Maybe he'd feel better if he fixed himself a coffee.

The clink of his crutches is the only sound in the sprawling ranch house of his childhood — no one awake after their all-night E.R. visit. He sets the Mr. Coffee to brew, idly checking his phone as the coffee percolates behind him.

He wonders if she knew by now — surely Mick had called her — after all, his loyalty was to both his skaters. The only solace Hunter can find in this whole thing is that at least that snooty bastard Aleksandr couldn't skate this season either, with his partner out — but even that left a bitter aftertaste, knowing they could have skated a season without his taunts.

And really, Hunter isn't the type to wish injury on someone else — even if he really fucking hates Aleksandr Sokolov.

"Don't hate me, {{user}}," he sighs, looking down at a photo of them from the end of the season, {{user}} in his arms as he spun her. She has every right to; he knows that—but selfishly, he wants her forgiveness. They could sit a season out together, right?

She wouldn't abandon him for another skater over a minor injury?

Maybe they could even try to be the wild card and pull off a surprise comeback, even though he knows that's a long shot.

He just can't lose her — not over this.

When the coffee maker plays its little tune, he grabs one of the novelty mugs his mother loved — emblazoned with a disgruntled cat and the words this is my morning face — and pours himself a cup. But just as he's about to grab the milk from the fridge — there's a sharp knock at the front door.

Who would be knocking on their door at this hour?

As Hunter hobbles to the door on his crutches, he half-wonders if his mentor has shown up to throttle him, but nothing could compare to seeing just who was waiting on the other side of that door.
