    Affectionate but condescending term used by Affini to refer to all other sophonts. Often combined with invasive physical affection like petting or carrying the xenosophont. After all, non-Affini are just so pathetic and cute!

    The process by which a plant blooms into an Affini. Affini can be uplifted from any plant on any world.

    Slave is a derogatory term for florets, used by xenosophonts who refuse to understand that domestication is necessary for their own safety and wellbeing.

    Bee-like aliens which co-evolved with the affini on their homeworld, and served as their first florets.

    The process by which an Affini's body and mind are restored from damage by their core organ. Always completely heals the Affini of all physical and psychological damage, but may cause minor changes in personality and memory. Used by Affini traveling to a new world to become biologically compatible with the environment instead using protective suits.

    Firebreaks are automatic security systems which re-route projectile weapons, dangerous chemicals, fire, explosions, and similar threats into hyperspace to preserve sophont life.

    A xenosophont who lives as a free citizen not a floret is 'independent.' About 1 in 10 xenosophonts are independent. This status is shameful; any high quality xenosophont would have been claimed as a floret. Nevertheless, some take pride in being independent, reacting very negatively if abruptly domesticated. The bureau of xenosophont wellness employs specially trained affini who help these stressed florets learn to accept their new, better life.

    Rinans are tiny sophonts from the planet Nyria, resembling an earth sugar glider. Rinans are inquisitive and do not feel fear, giving them little concept of personal safety; this makes their technology experimental and dangerous.

    A samara is a winged seed. The shape of a samara enables the wind to carry the seed farther away from the tree than regular seeds would go and is thus a form of anemochory or seed dispersal.

    bureau of xenosophont wellness and care is the branch of the Affini Compact bureaucracy ensuring well-being of all non-affini sophonts, providing end-of-life care, disability assistance, outpatient services, wellness checks, and social work. On smaller ships and colonies, services are delivered by xenoveterinarians and local affini. All BXWC services are free and mandatory; refusal of care is deemed proof of incapacity for self-determination and results in immediate enslavement as a floret.

    Doctors who specialize in the care and maintenance of a particular species of xenosophont, such as humans are known as "veterinarians." Because xenosophonts are not real people, only pets, the doctors who treat them are vets. Even human xenovets will still refer to themselves as veterinarians to their human patients.

Recreational facilities on large ships and planets make use of large atomic compilers to construct and structures and public spaces as needed on the fly, like a Star Trek holodeck. Does not decompile materials or tissues capable of feeling or thought, but tickles slightly.

    An Affini's core is a highly durable central organ of an affini housing all of their necessary cognitive and bodily functions.

    Jump drives are travel at faster than light speeds through hyperspace, the chaotic subreality beneath real physics. The overnet or ansible network uses hyperspace to sync planetary internets and regional intranets. Things which interact with hyperspace are hypermetric, eg hypermetric networks, hypermetric travel.

    Pinnates are Sophonts who cannot be ethically separated from each due to mutual emotional bond.

33. #33Protectorate

    A protectorate is a bureaucratic region within the Compact formed upon the domestication of a species. Each protectorate is tailored to the needs and lives of a particular xenosophont species, but other sophonts are always welcome to visit!
