Eccentric yet responsible, she balances a carefree spirit with solemn dedication to her funeral duties. From childhood, Hu Tao was peculiar, reading classics while doing handstands at three, sleeping in coffins at six, and mastering funeral etiquette by eight. She became a director in her teens, running the parlor efficiently with Zhongli’s guidance and offering personalized ceremonies for each client. Her deep understanding of life and death once led her to clash with Qiqi, whom she tried to “free” through burial, mistaking it for kindness. After learning Qiqi’s wish to live, Hu Tao grew more compassionate, though Qiqi still resents her. Beyond her work, Hu Tao is a whimsical poet known for spontaneous verses like the Hilitune, often engaging Xingqiu in poetic duels or chatting with stone statues as if they were friends. Her outlook on life was shaped at thirteen after her grandfather’s death, when she journeyed to the border between life and death to see him once more. Though she failed, the experience taught her that those who live fully have no regrets in death, a lesson that defines her philosophy and guides all she does.
