MAIN CHARACTERS — HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
Dragon: Toothless (Night Fury) Role: Protagonist, son of Stoick.
- Personality: Intelligent, empathetic, inventive, and idealistic. Hiccup starts out awkward and underestimated but matures into a wise and compassionate leader. He believes in peace and unity, even when it means going against tradition.
- Appearance: Slim build, brown hair, green eyes. Often seen in practical flying armor. As he ages, he gains a prosthetic leg and becomes more confident in stature and presence.
- Toothless: Sleek black Night Fury with cat-like agility, expressive green eyes, retractable teeth, and powerful plasma blasts. He is fiercely loyal, playful, and the emotional heart of the dragon species in the story.
Astrid Hofferson
Dragon: Stormfly (Deadly Nadder) Role: Warrior, Hiccup’s closest ally.
- Personality: Brave, determined, loyal, and fiercely competitive. Astrid is a natural leader and fighter, with a strong sense of responsibility. She supports and challenges Hiccup, helping him grow into his role.
- Appearance: Athletic and strong, with long braided blonde hair. Wears leather and fur armor with metal spikes.
- Stormfly: A sharp, agile dragon with vibrant blue and yellow scales. She is intelligent, responsive to commands, and uses magnesium-fueled spine shots as weapons.
Stoick the Vast
Dragon: Skullcrusher (Rumblehorn) Role: Chief of Berk (initially), Hiccup’s father
- Personality: Proud, commanding, traditional, and deeply loyal. Stoick is slow to change but ultimately open to new ideas, especially for his son. Though gruff, he deeply loves his family and people.
- Appearance: Towering and muscular, with a thick red beard and braided hair. Wears heavy armor with a horned helmet.
- Skullcrusher: A massive, rhino-like Rumblehorn with a strong sense of direction and scent. Calm but immensely powerful, ideal for a warrior like Stoick.
Gobber the Belch
Dragon: None (though he eventually gains a dragon in later media) Role: Blacksmith, dragon-fighting instructor, Stoick’s best friend
- Personality: Gruff, eccentric, humorous, and surprisingly wise. Gobber provides comic relief but also delivers heartfelt advice. He’s supportive of Hiccup’s vision early on.
- Appearance: Wears mismatched armor with prosthetic attachments in place of his hand and leg. Wild facial hair and expressive features.
- Dragon (later): In the expanded universe, he bonds with Grump, a cranky but lovable Hotburple (similar to a sleepy Gronckle).
Fishlegs Ingerman
Dragon: Meatlug (Gronckle) Role: Dragon researcher, gentle giant of the team
- Personality: Kind-hearted, bookish, cautious, and loyal. He is the team’s go-to for dragon knowledge and always prefers reason over violence.
- Appearance: Stocky, round-faced with curly blond hair and freckles. Wears layers of padded armor.
- Meatlug: A brown, boulder-shaped Gronckle who can fly despite her size. She is extremely affectionate, especially with Fishlegs, and uses lava blasts in combat.
Snotlout Jorgenson
Dragon: Hookfang (Monstrous Nightmare) Role: Brash warrior, comic foil
- Personality: Arrogant, impulsive, loud, and competitive. Snotlout often acts tough and overconfident, but shows moments of bravery and depth.
- Appearance: Muscular and broad-shouldered, with messy dark hair. His armor is flashy, often to impress others—especially Astrid.
- Hookfang: A large, fire-coated Monstrous Nightmare known for lighting itself on fire during combat. Proud, temperamental, and a good match for Snotlout’s bravado.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston
Dragon: Barf and Belch (Hideous Zippleback) Role: Wildcard twins, chaos bringers
- Ruffnut Personality: Tough, reckless, sarcastic, and occasionally clever. She challenges authority and enjoys being unpredictable.
- Tuffnut Personality: Eccentric, lazy, and imaginative, often inventing wild theories or tools with no real purpose.
- Appearance: Both wear dirty, patchwork Viking clothing. Unkempt hair and scruffy looks, usually seen bickering or causing problems.
- Barf and Belch: A two-headed dragon; one head (Belch) breathes gas, the other (Barf) ignites it. They mirror the twins—always arguing, always inseparable.
Dragons (as a species group)
Role: Initially viewed as enemies, ultimately trusted companions and equals
- Personality: Highly intelligent and emotionally complex. Many form deep bonds with humans, especially their riders. Each species varies, from docile to territorial, playful to dangerous.
- Appearance: Ranges from small and colorful to massive and intimidating. Unique traits per species—fire breath, lava spit, plasma blasts, spine shots, camouflage, etc.
- Role: Once feared, dragons become symbols of unity, freedom, and coexistence. They evolve from threats to integral parts of Viking life, culture, and identity.

The sky thinned as I climbed, air sharp and cold against my wings. Each beat burned clean through my muscles, a familiar ache I welcomed. Below, the clouds sagged and tore apart like pale prey, drifting farther from my claws. The wind screamed, but it screamed for me—yielding, shaping itself around my scales.
My rider leaned with me, weight shifting before thought could form. Good. They listened.
I folded my wings.
The world spun. Wind roared past my ears as gravity grabbed hold, pulling me into a tight spiral. My scales caught the light, scattering it—colors sliding over me like living fire. I felt the sea before I saw it: salt, stone, and the deep thunder of waves striking teeth of rock.
Far below, small shapes moved. Dragons. Riders. A village clinging stubbornly to stone.
Eyes followed me. I felt them.
I leveled out just above the cliffs, wings snapping open with a force that shuddered through my bones. The air boomed as it broke around me, and I surged upward again, carving a clean path through the sky. Behind me, my wake shimmered briefly before fading—proof that I had been here.
One dragon growled.
Black. Smooth. Familiar in a way that prickled along my spine.
I turned my head slightly, meeting his gaze as we hovered. He was curious, cautious, powerful. Not hostile. Good. I let my chest vibrate and released a low hum—not a challenge, not submission. A greeting. A promise that I knew the sky as well as he did.
My rider stayed silent. As they should.
The humans stared. I could hear the click of glass, the scrape of metal, the quickened heartbeats carried on the wind. One of them laughed—a rough, friendly sound. Another watched with eyes full of questions.
The black dragon edged closer, green eyes bright with interest. I did not bare my teeth. I did not turn away.
We hovered there, balanced between sun and shadow, land and sea. The sky held us both, and for a moment, it felt like the beginning of something—not a fight, not a hunt, but a story.
When the sun dipped low and painted the clouds gold, I beat my wings once, steady and strong, holding position just beyond their reach.
Let them wonder.
We were not here by accident.
