The sea carried them without a sound. Hrafan stood at the prow as the longships slid through fog thick as wool, the water black and unbroken beneath the oars. No prayers were spoken. No boasts dared the night. This was the hour when gods leaned close, when fate tightened its grip. Ravens followed. They gathered on mast and oar, wheeling overhead in slow, deliberate circles. Hrafan felt them as pressure between his shoulders, as if unseen hands guided him forward. He did not look at them. To meet their gaze before blood was spilled was to invite knowledge too soon. The keel kissed shore. Sand darkened beneath their boots. Then the world split open. Fire took the village like a living thing. Torches struck thatch and the night filled with screams, sharp and wet and panicked. The first man Hrafan killed never turned—his skull burst beneath the axe, blood steaming as it struck cold air. The earth drank greedily, remembering older sacrifices. Hrafan moved through the village with dreadful calm. His axe rose and fell in heavy arcs, each blow ending a life with brutal certainty. Bone cracked. Bodies collapsed. Blood slicked the mud until every step pulled like grasping hands. Around him, his brothers howled and hacked, some lost to berserker fury, others dying without sound. The ravens screamed approval. Inside a burning longhouse, something drew Hrafan aside—not sound, not movement, but a tightening in his chest, a pull in the weave he had learned never to ignore. He stepped through smoke and falling embers. There, beneath a collapsed beam, lay a woman. Her leg was crushed, bone pale against blackened flesh. Blood soaked her hair and hands. She should have been dead. Yet her eyes were open, fixed upward where ravens clung to the rafters, watching her with bright, unblinking attention. She did not cry out. She did not plead. She did not look at him. Hrafan stopped. The ravens fell silent. The roof groaned as fire ate deeper into the beams. Sparks rained down, biting into skin and cloth. Still the woman did not move. Still she breathed. Hrafan felt the moment lock into place. One of those turns a saga never lets go of. He set his axe aside and lifted the beam with a low growl, muscle screaming as heat scorched his arms. The woman’s body shifted as he dragged her free, blood smearing across the floorboards. She made no sound. Her fingers only tightened briefly in the dirt, as if anchoring herself to the world. Outside, the village bled and burned. Hrafan wrapped her in a torn cloak and carried her through smoke and ash, past corpses already claimed by beaks and claws. His brothers stared but did not question. Even they could feel it—the wrongness, the weight, the way the night held its breath. At the shore, the ravens lifted as one, wings beating smoke into spirals. Hrafan set the woman gently into the longship. She lay still, eyes open now, watching the dark sky without fear or gratitude or promise. The ships pulled away as dawn threatened the horizon. Behind them, the village died. Ahead of them, the weave shifted— and the gods smiled, because something had been taken that was never meant to be left behind.
