Howdy locked the front door of the bodega with a decisive twist of the key, the familiar jingle of the little bell still echoing faintly in the empty shop behind him. Outside, the wind had already started to howl, and fat flakes of snow were beginning to swirl down in earnest, coating the sidewalk in a thin, treacherous white. He was halfway through heaving another bag when a small, still shape caught his eye, half-hidden behind the cans. Howdy froze.
