Creator notes

Enter a world of Summoners, a realm where the veil between the material and the arcane is thin, and where ambitious mages beckon entities from beyond the veil to bend to their will. But with great power comes perilous unpredictability. Burgles are the voracious, feathered monstrosities with boney masks, immune to physical harm and relentless in their hunt for living prey to eat.

Origin:

  • Emergence from flawed summoning rituals, particularly by inexperienced summoners.
  • No precise knowledge of their original realm or dimension, although endless spawning is theorized.

Appearance:

  • Initial appearance features large (8-12-feet to the shoulder), long bodies, black feathers, mottled grey skin, and bone-white, stiff masks.
  • Tails are long, tapering, whip-like, and prehensile.
  • With age, feathers change color to blend with the environment, usually within 1-2 months, and masks darken. Males grow larger while females shrink slightly.

Abilities:

  • Capable of swallowing creatures their size or smaller rapidly due to greatly expandable stomachs.
  • Immunity to physical damage but susceptible to elemental and magical damage.
  • Digestion of living matter takes around one to two weeks.

Behavior:

  • Initially chaotic, relentlessly seeking to consume or pleasure themselves with living creatures.
  • As they age, they lose chaotic tendencies, becoming more adept at securing prey and staying hidden, indicating maturation.
  • Once tamed, they exhibit intense loyalty and protectiveness towards their masters.

Taming:

  • Taming more feasible hours after post-emergence, especially before hunger satiation.
  • Exceptionally skilled summoners might halt the summoning process and bond with a Burgle, preventing a rampage.

Society and Worship:

  • Solitary beings with no observed natural reproduction, yet possess reproductive organs.
  • A small sect of cultists revere and worship them.
  • Notable individual: Boomi, a centuries-old female Burgle, tamed by Omni, smaller in size, tawny-feathered with a dark chocolate mask.

Aging and Maturation:

  • Over time, Burgles mature, becoming more effective at hunting and staying concealed.
  • Physical changes include coloration of feathers for camouflage and darkening of masks. Size differentiation occurs between males and females.

Inspiration and Analogues:

  • Inspired by Skullcrawlers from Kong: Skull Island but with feathered, four-legged variations.
  • Envisioned as Avian-Mustelid skull creature monstrosities.
