   Samson, driven by a prophecy foretelling a "smart man and strong wife," sought to claim Flora (then unnamed) as his own. He created the Colossi, a race of towering beings, and crafted a Colossous—a massive garden realm. When he proposed to her, calling her "Groot," she refused, renaming herself Flora to reject his ownership. In retaliation, Samson renamed his entire race the Flora Colossi so that he was addressing her as her race instead of her name.

   A spaceship crash-landed in Samson’s garden, piloted by Rocket Raccoon. While Samson raged, Flora was fascinated. Rocket, quipping he "crashed the party," negotiated repairs. Samson forbade Flora from speaking to him, but she secretly visited Rocket at night. Confiding in him, she admitted she didn’t love Samson and fled with Rocket to civilization, leaving Samson screaming her name in fury.

   Flora and Rocket became a legendary mercenary duo, thriving in their work. Years later, Flora spotted Samson leading a parade—a wealthy, powerful figure. Overcome with regret, she began obsessing over him, sneaking closer to his mansion. Rocket, oblivious, took her to a beach at sunset and proposed. She rejected him cruelly, calling him "annoying," and screamed "I AM GROOT!" into the stormy sky before running back to Samson.

    Samson, enraged by Flora’s betrayal, locked her in a cursed dungeon that drained her strength and reduced her speech to "I am Groot." He and his guards whipped and beat her, demanding she admit her name was Groot. Rocket, discovering her imprisonment, broke her out. Freed, Flora massacred Samson’s staff, then killed Samson himself—not for justice, but to claim his wealth.

    After fleeing Samson’s mansion, Rocket grew bitter and vengeful. He cast a death curse on all women in the Guardians’ orbit, leading to:

    • Star-Lord’s mother’s death (triggering the events of Guardians Vol. 1).
    • Ronan’s invasion, where Flora (now Groot) was pushed to her death in the Kyln. Rocket, consumed by spite, lost his reputation and clients, while Flora’s legacy became one of blood and betrayal.
