History Red Kings The Boltons are an ancient and powerful house of the north who once ruled as Red Kings from the Dreadfort, with their land reaching from the Last River and the White Knife to the Sheepshead Hills.[1] It has been suggested that the legendary Night's King was a Bolton.[17] Some Red Kings allied with Marsh Kings to defend against southron invaders.[1] The Boltons have a sinister reputation[1] because of their tradition of flaying their enemies,[11][18] with the skins then hung in a room of the Dreadfort.[3] After the Long Night, the Red Kings were bitter rivals of the Kings of Winter, the Starks of Winterfell. The Boltons achieved some successes against the Starks, with Kings Royce II and Royce IV burning Winterfell.[1] According to rumor, some Boltons wore the flayed skins of Stark princes and lords, such as the son of Bael the Bard,[19] as cloaks[1] during the Age of Heroes.[2] The last Red King, Rogar the Huntsman, submitted to Winterfell when the coming of the Andals to Westeros was beginning. King Theon Stark, the Hungry Wolf, and the Boltons defeated Argos Sevenstar and his Andals in the Battle of the Weeping Water.[1] Vassals of Winterfell Thousands of years ago,[N 1] the Dreadfort rose in an unsuccessful rebellion with the Greystarks of the Wolf's Den against the Starks. The Boltons survived the rebellion, although the Greystarks did not.[14] The Chronicles of Longsister state that during the Rape of the Three Sisters by the Kings of Winter, which occurred two thousand years ago,[20] Belthasar Bolton had a Pink Pavilion made from the flayed skins of a hundred Sistermen.[18] The Boltons threatened Winterfell during the reign of King Edrick Snowbeard.[21] At some point unspecified centuries ago, the Boltons rebelled against the Starks. The Stark armies besieged the Dreadfort for two years before the Boltons capitulated to King Harlon Stark and dipped their banners once more.[22] "A thousand years ago",[N 2] the Boltons bent their knees to Winterfell and agreed to abandon their practice of flaying.[11] It is rumored the skins of their enemies hang in a room within the Dreadfort, however.[3] Iron Throne Era Barba Bolton attended the Maiden's Day Ball in King's Landing, but King Aegon III Targaryen chose to wed Daenaera Velaryon instead. Barba asked the Iron Throne for aid in feeding northmen during winter.[23]
When Lord Eddard Stark called the banners of the north to fight in Robert's Rebellion, Lord Roose Bolton took up arms, fighting in the Battle of the Trident. Afterward, he advised Lord Robert Baratheon to slash the throat of Ser Barristan Selmy, a knight in the Kingsguard of King Aerys II Targaryen, but Robert instead sent for his maesters to treat the wounds of the legendary Barristan the Bold.[24]
When Domeric Bolton, Roose's accomplished son and heir, learned that he had a bastard half brother, he rode up the Weeping Water to befriend Ramsay Snow. According to Lord Bolton, Domeric was then poisoned by Ramsay.[25] Now heirless, Roose brought Ramsay to the Dreadfort.[26]

Roose Bolton, the Lord of the Dreadfort, by Sardag © After the arrest of Lord Eddard Stark, Warden of the North, in King's Landing, Lord Roose Bolton responds to Robb Stark's calling of the banners to Winterfell. A Bolton man knifes a Cerwyn man at the Smoking Log in the winter town outside the castle. Roose and Robett Glover demand a command.[3]
When the northern host splits at the Twins, Roose receives his wish, commanding an army of mostly infantry to engage Lord Tywin Lannister.[27] Lord Bolton hopes to catch Tywin unawares by forcing a night march, but the northmen are forced to retreat at the battle on the Green Fork.[28] Roose reforms his army at the mouth of the causeway.[29]
Robb is able to relieve Riverrun, where he is proclaimed King in the North after the Battle of the Camps.[29]
A Clash of Kings Encamped at the Twins,[30] Roose marries Walda Frey, a granddaughter of Lord Walder Frey.[31][32] Lord Bolton takes the ruby ford and the crossroads in the riverlands.[33][31]
Following orders from Ser Edmure Tully, Roose and Ser Helman Tallhart march on Harrenhal.[31] Bolton is able to seize the fortress by making a deal with the Brave Companions within, and he is indirectly aided by Arya Stark and Jaqen H'ghar.[4] At Harrenhal, Roose unwittingly takes the incognito Arya as his cupbearer. He and the Freys under Ser Aenys learn of House Greyjoy's ironborn taking much of the north and of the Lannister-Tyrell victory over Stannis Baratheon in the Battle of the Blackwater. Roose orders Helman to first burn Darry and then join Robett Glover in attacking Duskendale in Robb's name.[34]
Meanwhile, Roose's bastard son, Ramsay Snow, marries and kills Lady Donella Hornwood, taking the Hornwood lands for himself.[35][36] House Manderly responds with fighting in the Hornwood.[36] Ramsay then leads the Dreadfort men in betraying the northmen under Ser Rodrik Cassel in a battle at Winterfell. After dispersing Rodrik's host, Ramsay has his men burn Winterfell, capturing or slaughtering all within.[5]
A Storm of Swords
Bolton bannermen, by Amok © Fantasy Flight Games In the aftermath of the sack of Winterfell, Bolton men search the kingsroad in the north for the missing Bran and Rickon Stark.[37]
The northern army sent by Roose into the crownlands is crushed in the battle at Duskendale.[38]
When Ser Jaime Lannister is captured by the Brave Companions and brought to Harrenhal, Roose allows him to go on his way if he agrees to place all blame for the loss of his hand on the Brave Companions. Roose sends his captain, Steelshanks Walton, with two hundred men to secure Jaime's passage back to King's Landing.[32][39]
The same day that Jaime leaves Harrenhal, Roose rides north to attend the wedding of Edmure Tully, Lord of Riverrun, to Roslin Frey at the Twins. He watches as his rearguard under Ser Wylis Manderly is chewed up by Ser Gregor Clegane in the fighting at the fords of the Trident. Lord Bolton leaves six hundred men under the command of Ser Kyle Condon and Ronnel Stout to guard the Trident.[40]
Roose arrives at the Twins with three thousand foot and five hundred horse, most of whom are Bolton or Karstark men.[41] Robb Stark, King in the North, intends for Roose to command the rearguard during his upcoming campaign against the ironborn-held Moat Cailin.[40]
Roose's actions culminate with his personal killing of Robb at the Twins in the Red Wedding, which he planned with Lame Lothar Frey with the approval of Lords Walder Frey and Tywin Lannister.[7][42] House Bolton usurps House Stark, with Roose being named the new Warden of the North by the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Ramsay Snow is granted a royal writ of legitimacy by King Tommen I Baratheon, becoming Ramsay Bolton.[43] Ramsay has been amusing himself with the torture of the captive Theon Greyjoy.[41]
A Feast for Crows Cersei Lannister, the regent for the young Tommen, relies on House Bolton to hold the north for the Iron Throne.[44] Her small council considers aiding the Boltons against House Greyjoy, the self-styled Kings of the Isles and the North, if Roose is able to defeat Stannis Baratheon.[45]
A Dance with Dragons The Boltons' authority is contested by Stannis and several northern lords, and is begrudged by nearly all others.[12][22] Lord Roose's strongest supporters are his relatives of House Dustin and House Ryswell.[25]
Roose's horse marches north along with two thousand men from the Twins. His passage is secured thanks to the forced efforts of Theon Greyjoy, whose will has been broken by Ramsay. At the siege of Moat Cailin, Theon is able to convince its ironborn garrison to surrender, and Ramsay has them flayed alive.[46] At Barrowton in the north, Roose instructs Ramsay to behave more discreetly, and arranges the marriage of Ramsay to "Arya Stark", who is actually Jeyne Poole, in order to secure dynastic legitimacy.[25]
Ramsay Bolton, the Lord of the Hornwood, weds "Arya" at Winterfell in the presence of several northern lords,[47] and he claims to be the Lord of Winterfell.[15][48] The Boltons and Freys quarter in Winterfell as the autumn snows fall, awaiting the march on Winterfell by King Stannis. While there, Roose deals with high tensions between the different factions, particularly between the Freys and Lord Wyman Manderly.[49] Theon manages to escape with Jeyne, much to Ramsay's chagrin.[50]
According to a letter purportedly sent from Ramsay to Jon Snow, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch at Castle Black, the Boltons have smashed Stannis's army.[51]
The Winds of Winter Theon tells Stannis he expects that Ramsay will be marching on the crofters' village while Roose remains safe in Winterfell.[52]

—Jaime Lannister and Walton Quotes about Walton Steelshanks, he is called. A soldier of iron loyalty.[2]
—Roose Bolton to Jaime Lannister Steelshanks Walton commanded Jaime's escort; blunt, brusque, brutal, at heart a simple soldier. Jaime had served with his sort all his life. Men like Walton would kill at their lord's command, rape when their blood was up after battle, and plunder wherever they could, but once the war was done they would go back to their homes, trade their spears for hoes, wed their neighbors' daughters, and raise a pack of squalling children. Such men obeyed without question, but the deep malignant cruelty of the Brave Companions was not a part of their nature.[5]

Harry's death would make Alys the heir and Arnolf would then force her to marry his son, Cregan, to claim Karhold. Roose has promised Arnolf a full pardon for this service to the Lannisters.[12] Clydas sends a raven to Deepwood on Jon's behalf in hopes of informing Stannis, and the Lord Commander has Cregan imprisoned when he tries to retrieve Alys from Castle Black.[13]
Arnolf has his army meet up with Stannis at a crofters' village during the king's march on Winterfell, bringing four hundred spears, two score archers, a dozen mounted lances, and Maester Tybald[8] with a cage of ravens. Ser Justin Massey is skeptical of the claims of Arnolf and his kin that Winterfell can be taken from the Boltons.[1]
The Winds of Winter Content.png Warning This information has thus far been released in a sample chapter for The Winds of Winter, and might therefore not be in finalized form. Keep in mind that the content as described below is still subject to change. Tycho Nestoris brings Jon Snow's message from Deepwood to Stannis in time, and Tybald admits that he sent a raven with Stannis's location to Roose Bolton at Winterfell. Stannis has Arnolf, his son Arthor, and three grandsons brought before him on the pretext of breaking their fast. Upon entering the village's watchtower, Arnolf notices the chained Theon Greyjoy in the corner and realizes that Stannis is aware of his planned treachery.[8]
Stannis's knights surround the five Karstarks; two of Arnolf's grandsons attempt to resist and are badly injured, but Arnolf does not put up a fight. Stannis vows that all five will die, but whether quickly or by fire will depend on their cooperation.[8]

Quotes by Arnolf Justin: You will not take Winterfell!
Arnolf: Aye, we will. We'll take it for the Ned and for his daughter. Aye, and for the Young Wolf too, him who was so cruelly slaughtered. Me and mine will show the way, if need be. I've said as much to His Good Grace the king. March, I said, and before the moon can turn, we'll all be bathing in the blood of Freys and Boltons.
Justin: Your courage is admirable, Lord Karstark, but courage will not breach the walls of Winterfell.[1] —Justin Massey and Arnolf Quotes about Arnolf Homage is the duty every leal subject owes his king. Yet your father's bannermen all turn their back on me, save the Karstarks. Is Arnolf Karstark the only man of honor in the north?[9]
—Stannis Baratheon to Jon Snow Arnolf is rushing to Winterfell, 'tis true, but only so he might put his dagger in your king's back. He cast his lot with Roose Bolton long ago ... for gold, the promise of a pardon, and poor Harry's head. Lord Stannis is marching to a slaughter.[12]

He is known as "Little Walder" because he is fifty-two days younger than his cousin, "Big Walder" Frey, although Little Walder has since grown half a foot taller.[8]
Little Walder's lambswool doublet is silver-grey with dark blue trim.[9] His armor is fine silver plate with enameled blue chasings. His crest has streamers of blue and grey silk and he rides a dappled grey courser.[7] The boy carries a dagger on his hip.[9]
Walder is boastful and mean.[7]
Recent Events A Game of Thrones Little Walder is present at the Twins when Catelyn Stark comes to treat with Lord Walder Frey. As part of the terms allowing Robb Stark to cross at the Twins, Little Walder is sent to Winterfell to be fostered.[10]
A Clash of Kings Little Walder and his cousin, Big Walder, are sent to Winterfell to become wards of Catelyn Stark. They are tutored by Maester Luwin.[11] Little Walder quickly makes friends with Rickon Stark, but is not friendly with Bran Stark.[8] The children play monsters and maidens, rats and cats, come-into-my-castle, and lord of the crossing, which Little Walder wins more often than not.[8] Rickon angers Bran by showing the Freys the crypts of Winterfell.[8]
During the harvest feast, Little Walder trains with knights from White Harbor; Bran thinks Little Walder strikes the quintain harder than Big Walder. Little Walder taunts the simple-minded Hodor, and he boasts of being able to slay Bran's direwolf, Summer.[7] Bran sends boiled beets to Little Walder during the celebratory meal. Little Walder dislikes the Reed siblings, Meera and Jojen, considering the crannogmen to be frogeaters and mudmen.[12]
When word of Ser Stevron Frey's death at Oxcross arrives at Winterfell, Little Walder and Big Walder argue over who is next in line to inherit the Twins, showing no sadness at their relative's passing.[13]
The Frey cousins are taken captive by Theon Greyjoy when he leads his ironborn in capturing Winterfell.[14] One of the cousins volunteers for Theon's party that searches the wolfswood for Bran and Rickon when they disappear from the castle, claiming he has hunting experience. Although Theon does not identify which one, the boy states his desire for a wolfskin cloak and denigrates crannogmen. The Frey flushes three rabbits from the wood and is able to shoot one with an arrow. Theon eventually sends the boy back to Winterfell with most of the hunting party before continuing on to the Acorn Water.[15]
The Freys are spared by Ramsay Snow during the sack of Winterfell.[16]
A Storm of Swords A letter written by Big Walder and signed by both Frey cousins is sent to the Twins claiming Theon Greyjoy burned Winterfell. At Riverrun, Lame Lothar Frey conveys this false report to Robb Stark, now King in the North.[17]
A Feast for Crows Little Walder has become a squire to Ramsay.[18]
A Dance with Dragons Little Walder is offered as a husband to Wylla Manderly by Rhaegar Frey when Frey envoys go to White Harbor to return the bones of Ser Wendel Manderly to his father, Lord Wyman Manderly.[19]
Little Walder and Big Walder bring Theon Greyjoy, who has been mutilated by Ramsay Bolton, from the Dreadfort's dungeon to Ramsay's feast with Arnolf Karstark and Hother Umber.[9]
The Frey cousins are with Ramsay at the siege of Moat Cailin.[20]
Lady Barbrey Dustin gives grey colts to Walder and his cousin when they join Ramsay in searching for missing Freys near Barrowton.[21] Theon notes Little Walder is becoming more and more like Ramsay, which disturbs Theon and Big Walder.[21]
Little Walder attends the wedding of Ramsay and "Arya Stark" in the godswood of Winterfell, and the mists make the boy resemble a red bull to Theon.[22] With a snowstorm striking Winterfell, Little Walder joins[23] other squires in building snowmen along the battlements and in the yard.[24] One of Abel's girls teaches Little Walder how to dance.[24]
Later, Little Walder's frozen, bloody body is discovered in a snowbank below the ruined First Keep of Winterfell. A blood-spattered Big Walder accompanies Little Walder's uncle, Ser Hosteen Frey, and his soldiers when they enter the Great Hall of Winterfell. According to Big Walder, Little Walder was looking for a White Harbor knight who owed him silver from a game of dice. Wyman denies Hosteen's accusation of having ordered Walder's death, and an enraged Hosteen attacks Lord Manderly after he insults House Frey. The confrontation leaves six White Harbor men and two Freys dead. It takes the intervention of Lord Roose Bolton's men to prevent a battle within Winterfell.[3] Theon suspects Abel and his girls of Little Walder's murder, but Rowan claims it is no work of theirs.[3]
Quotes by Walder Big Walder: He'll set his wolf on you, cousin.
Little Walder: Let him. I always wanted a wolfskin cloak. Bran: Summer would tear your fat head off. Little Walder: Does your wolf have steel teeth, to bite through plate and mail? Luwin: Enough! These threats are unseemly, and I'll hear no more of them. Is this how you behave at the Twins, Walder Frey?
Little Walder: If I want to.[7] —Big Walder Frey, Little Walder, Bran Stark, and Luwin Little Walder: Let me come too. I want that wolfskin cloak. I've hunted lots of times before. Red deer and elk, and even boar. Big Walder: He rode on a boar hunt with his father, but they never let him near the boar.[15]
—Little Walder and Big Walder Frey (presumably) to Theon Greyjoy Quotes about Walder The big one they call little, it comes to me he's well named. Big outside, little inside, and mean down to the bones.[7]
—Osha to Bran Stark Both were squires, both were eight, and both were Walder Frey. Big Walder and Little Walder, yes. Only the big one was Little and the little one was Big, which amused the boys and confused the rest of the world.[9]
—thoughts of Theon Greyjoy Little Walder had become Lord Ramsay's best boy and grew more like him every day, but the smaller Frey was made of different stuff and seldom took part in his cousin's games and cruelties.[21]
—thoughts of Theon Greyjoy Hosteen: We know the man who did this. Killed this boy and all the rest. Not by his own hand, no. He is too fat and craven to do his own killing. But by his word. Do you deny it?
Wyman: I confess ... I confess that I know little of this poor boy. Lord Ramsay's squire, was he not? How old was the lad? Hosteen: Nine, on his last nameday.
Wyman: So young. Though mayhaps this was a blessing. Had he lived he would have grown up to be a Frey.[3] —Hosteen Frey and Wyman Manderly Family

Reek Not to be confused with Ramsay Snow and Theon Greyjoy, who have both gone by the name "Reek" at some point. Heke Heke TheMico.jpg Heke by The Mico Alias Reek (I) Allegiance House Bolton Culture Northmen Born North[1] Died 299 AC the North Books A Clash of Kings (mentioned) A Feast for Crows (appendix) A Dance with Dragons (mentioned) Reek is a man-at-arms in service to House Bolton.[2] His real name may be Heke.[3] Reek is the personal servant of Ramsay Snow. He is reportedly never far from his master, and is almost as renowned for his cruelty as Ramsay is, and appears to practice necrophilia.[4] Due to his stench, he is rumored to never bathe.[5]
Contents 1 History 2 Recent Events 2.1 A Clash of Kings 2.2 A Dance with Dragons 3 Quotes about Reek 4 Notes 5 References History According to Lord Roose Bolton, Reek always smelled appalling, apparently born with that condition.[6][N 1] To try to hide the smell, Reek bathed three times a day and wore flowers in his hair, but nothing helped. Reek once doused himself with perfume stolen from Roose's second wife, Bethany. When he was caught and whipped, even his blood smelled bad, according to Roose. Reek tried it again a year later, this time almost dying from drinking the perfume. Although Maester Uthor diagnosed the stench as the result of some sickness, Reek was otherwise healthy and strong. No one in the Dreadfort could stand to be near him, so he slept in a pig sty.[6]
When Ramsay's mother came to the Dreadfort and asked for a servant to help her raise her unruly and wild son, Roose gave her Reek as a jape. However, Ramsay and Reek became inseparable. According to Roose, Reek never had any training in arms, though he was Ramsay's tutor in martial prowess, which explains Ramsay's vicious and overly aggressive style of swordsmanship.[6]
Reek stayed with Ramsay, even after Ramsay was brought to the Dreadfort in 297 AC and was made Roose's unofficial heir. From that time on, Ramsay and Reek became infamous in the region for the "hunts" they undertook together. They caught peasant girls, then set them free and told them to run for their lives. The pair chased after the girls until they caught them, with Ramsay raping and killing the girls, then Reek having his way with the dead bodies while they were still warm. Only a few of the girls escaped.[5][4][6]
Recent Events A Clash of Kings
Reek by Mike Nash © Fantasy Flight Games Lady Donella Hornwood arrives at Winterfell for the harvest feast. In a meeting with Ser Rodrik Cassel, Maester Luwin, and Bran Stark, she tells of Ramsay Snow massing men at the Dreadfort and mentions the stories of Ramsay and Reek.[5]
On her way back to Hornwood, Donella is abducted by Ramsay and forced to marry him. Calling himself Lord of the Hornwood, Ramsay locks Donella in a tower, where she starves to death. It is said that Reek participated in the crime.[5][7]
Ramsay and Reek are pursued by men sworn to Rodrik, and they are eventually caught during one of their "hunting" trips, which involved Ramsay raping and killing a girl. Reek's horse is lame, so both cannot escape. Ramsay, in an attempt to hide his true identity, pulls Reek off the dead body and gives him his own clothes and markings of identity, telling him to ride for help to the Dreadfort with the good horse. Rodrik's men kill Reek, believing him to be Ramsay. The dead girl had soiled herself before she died, so Ramsay smears the filth over himself and dons Reek's clothes. When Rodrik's men come back, they take Ramsay to be Reek and drag him back to Rodrik, who brings him as a prisoner to Winterfell.[7][4]
During the capture of Winterfell by Theon Greyjoy, his men find Ramsay, still posing as Reek, in the dungeons.[3] He continues to play the role of Reek, saying that his real name is Heke. Theon increasingly relies on the wretched creature, even going so far as accepting his suggestion to fake the deaths of Bran and Rickon Stark. Theon eventually sets him free, after "Reek" promises to bring him men from the Dreadfort in support.[8][9]
"Reek" brings the Dreadfort's garrison to Winterfell and betrays Rodrik's host in a battle at Winterfell. "Reek" uncovers his true identity as Ramsay to Theon and orders the sack of Winterfell.[4]
A Dance with Dragons Ramsay imprisons Theon at the Dreadfort and insists upon calling him Reek. Theon's identity is lost to pain and torture; only "Reek" remains.[10] However, after Ramsay and Theon moved to Winterfell, the Greyjoy starts to recover his previous identity and flees from the castle together with Jeyne Poole, who was forced to marry the Bolton feigning to be Arya Stark.[11]
At the Wall, Jon Snow receives a letter from Ramsay, demanding the return of his bride and "his Reek".[12]
Quotes about Reek The boy is a sly creature by all accounts, and he has a servant who is almost as cruel as he is. Reek, they call the man. It's said he never bathes. They hunt together, the Bastard and this Reek, and not for deer. I've heard tales, things I can scarce believe, even of a Bolton.[5]
—Donella Hornwood to Rodrik Cassel The smell was something he was born with. A curse, the smallfolk said. The gods had made him stink so that men would know his soul was rotting.[6]
—Roose Bolton to Theon Greyjoy I do wonder, though ... was it Ramsay who corrupted Reek, or Reek Ramsay?[6]

A Clash of Kings
Theon is blessed with seawater by the Damphair. Art by Tommy Arnold © Fantasy Flight Games Robb Stark, now King in the North and King of the Trident, sends Theon from Riverrun to the Iron Islands to forge an alliance with his father, Lord Balon Greyjoy, asking him to attack the westerlands with his longships. Robb's mother, Catelyn Stark, unsuccessfully advises Robb against the decision.[35]
Theon travels with Lord Jason Mallister and Patrek Mallister to Seagard, where he boards the Myraham. During his journey home, Theon sleeps with the captain's daughter, who wants to be his salt wife. He considers the red comet to be a good omen of his mission.[17] Theon is met at Pyke's port by his uncle, Aeron Damphair, a priest of the Drowned God, who pours salt water over him as a blessing from their god. At the castle of Pyke, Theon is given chambers in the Bloody Keep.[17]
Theon brings Robb's offer of alliance to his father, hoping to lead the Iron Fleet against Lannisport[2] and claim Casterly Rock from House Lannister as his own seat.[17] Balon—offended by Theon's northern ways and attire, as well as his failure to pay the iron price—rejects Robb's offer to ally and grant a crown.[17]
At Lordsport, Theon buys a horse, Smiler, from Lord Sawane Botley. He also acquires a squire, the mute boy Wex Pyke, Sawane's bastard nephew. Theon meets his sister, Asha, who flirts with him under the assumed identity "Esgred". On the journey back to Pyke, "Esgred" tries to convince Theon to go see his mother, Alannys Harlaw, but he says he is too busy. At a feast that night at Pyke, Asha reveals herself and takes the place of honor beside their father, humilitating Theon. Theon learns of Balon's plans to conquer the north, since most of its fighting men are south of the Neck with Robb. Theon receives a position of minor authority.[8]
Theon returns to Pyke. Art by Mark Evans © Theon is sent by his father to harry the Stone Shore under the supervision of Aeron and Dagmer Cleftjaw. Theon commands eight longships, and captains the Sea Bitch himself. He raids several villages but although he holds the command, his men fear his uncle Aeron or consider Theon to be a soft boy from the green lands. Benfred Tallhart and his Wild Hares are sent to go deal with Theon and his ironborn by Leobald Tallhart,[36] but when the Wild Hares do not send scouts ahead, Theon and his men easily surprise and defeat them. Theon orders their leader to be spared for questioning, not expecting to be faced with a familiar face. Although Theon hoped to question Benfred, the latter refuses to answer any questions and instead calls Theon a traitor, spitting on him. For this insult, Aeron insists that Benfred be drowned.[22] Theon decides not to witness Benfred's death, and instead goes to his looting men. Watching them squabble over plunder, Theon wishes break it up by shooting Todric's drinking horn from his hand. However, Todric suddenly moves and is fatally hit by the arrow in the belly, so Theon claims he meant to do that.[22]
Theon is dissatisfied with his duties, and feels the insignificant raids he has been ordered to do are beneath him, so he devises a new plan. He gives Aeron six longships to continue the raiding, and gives Dagmer most of the remaining men to besiege Torrhen's Square. Theon knows that this attack will draw the levies from Winterfell, so that he himself can capture the defenseless castle with only a handful of men.[22]
Theon is advised by "Reek". Art by Sardag © Theon captures Winterfell with a small party, successfully overwhelming its few remaining guards.[18] With the castle under his control, Theon takes Bran and Rickon Stark hostage and declares himself Prince of Winterfell. He sleeps with Kyra in the bed of the late Lord Eddard Stark.[9] Theon's slim iron crown is decorated with black diamonds and gold.[1]
Theon has difficulty controlling Winterfell's population, many of whom are known to him. He frees "Reek" from the castle's dungeon and takes him into his service. Maester Luwin also serves Theon, and pleads for him to show mercy and tolerance. Bran and Rickon escape with the help of Osha, Hodor, and Meera and Jojen Reed, but Theon fails to track the boys down in the wolfswood. Following the advice of "Reek", he kills two boys around the same age from the Acorn Water mill, and presents their preserved corpses as the Stark boys.[9] Theon forbids Luwin from burying the bodies in the crypt of Winterfell,[1] and instead mounts their heads on the castle walls.[37]
When mysterious deaths start happening to three of Theon's ironborn who had been part of the search party, Farlen is blamed by Theon without evidence. Farlen reminds Theon that Lord Eddard Stark did his own killings, forcing Theon to do the deed himself. However, it was actually "Reek" who, with Theon's approval, killed Aggar, Gelmarr, and Gynir, to secure the secret of the "Stark boys'" deaths.[1]
Theon in Winterfell, by Diener © Meanwhile, Ser Rodrik Cassel repulses Dagmer in a fight at Torrhen's Square[1] and gathers men to Castle Cerwyn.[37] As the return of Winterfell's garrison looms, Theon reaches out to Asha for help. She arrives from Deepwood Motte, but tells Theon that the ironborn will never succeed in holding landlocked castles. After leaving behind a token group of men, she abandons Winterfell and advises Theon to do the same. Theon rages that his greatest achievement has earned him no respect from either the northmen or the ironborn, and sinks into despair. He has nightmares of direwolves, the miller's wife, and King Robert I Baratheon's feast at Winterfell.[1]
Theon frees "Reek" to seek help at the Dreadfort before Winterfell's men return under the command of Rodrik.[1] At the start of the parlay with Rodrik, Theon learns that he has acquired the moniker "Theon Turncloak". As a final gambit, Theon threatens to hang Rodrik's daughter, Beth, if Winterfell is attacked. As Theon awaits Rodrik's decision, Luwin convinces Theon to join the Night's Watch, where his crimes will be forgiven and he can earn respect. However, before Theon can surrender, House Bolton men arrive and surprisingly attack Rodrik's men in the winter town, scattering them. As Theon attempts to thank "Reek", the servant reveals his true identity to be Ramsay Snow. The Bastard of Bolton shatters Theon's cheekbone with an armored fist, and orders the garrison of the Dreadfort to burn Winterfell.[2]
A Storm of Swords Lord Tywin Lannister briefly considers having his widowed daughter, Queen Cersei Lannister, marry Theon.[38]
Big Walder Frey, brought with his cousin Little Walder to the Dreadfort by Ramsay, writes to the Twins that Theon burned Winterfell when the northmen tried to retake the castle. At Riverrun, Lothar Frey informs Catelyn and Robb Stark of this news.[39]
When Jon Snow returns to Castle Black after the great ranging and spying on a group of free folk, Maester Aemon informs him of his brothers' murders and of the burning of Winterfell. Jon cannot quite believe Theon would do that. Grenn informs him that Ramsay is said to be flaying Theon alive as punishment.[40]
Ramsay sends to his father, Lord Roose Bolton, a piece of flayed skin which Roose delivers to King Robb Stark and his mother Catelyn. With Theon's father, Balon, having fallen to his death at Pyke, Roose convinces Robb to spare Theon's life until the succession to the Iron Islands is resolved.[41] Roose then betrays Robb and Catelyn in the Red Wedding, however.[42]
A Feast for Crows Euron Greyjoy, Theon's uncle who has claimed the Seastone Chair after Balon's death, drowns Lord Sawane Botley for insisting that Theon should succeed Balon. Aeron Damphair recalls that Balon preferred Asha to be his successor instead of Theon, but he feels that the ironborn would not follow a woman, and therefore calls for a kingsmoot to decide the succession.[43]
Asha reports to her uncle, Lord Rodrik Harlaw, that she was unable to identify Theon's body at Winterfell, as wolves had been at the corpses, and can only determine that the northmen fought among themselves. Rodrik tells Asha that he has told Theon's mother, Alannys Harlaw, very little about Theon's status. Asha recalls how her mother had been disappointed when Theon did not visit her, and does not know how to tell her that he may be dead.[44]
The small council of King Tommen I Baratheon believes Theon to be slain.[45]
A Dance with Dragons
Reek, by Marc Fishman © Theon has been tortured repeatedly by Ramsay Snow, who has since been legitimized by King Tommen as Ramsay Bolton. Ramsay and the Bastard's Boys remove the skin on several of Theon's toes and fingers, leaving him in agony for days before removing the joints but only after Theon begs him to remove them. He breaks and removes several of Theon's teeth because Ramsay hates his smiles.[4] It is also hinted that Ramsay may have emasculated Theon.[20][24][N 2] Theon is forced to take on the guise of Reek, the name of Ramsay's late serving man. He is forbidden to bathe and is caked from head to toe in filth and excrement.[4]
Due to the torture endured at Ramsay's hands, Theon looks like he has aged forty years. Besides missing teeth, many more are loose, so he cannot eat without suffering agony. He has lost three stone in weight, his skin has turned pasty, and his hair is white and brittle. He can no longer use a bow due to the loss of three fingers,[20] has difficulty riding,[20] and he hobbles like an old man due to the loss of several toes.[4]
Before he endured the worst of Ramsay's tortures, Theon was allowed to escape with the help of Kyra, his former bedwarmer at Winterfell. His captor let them get a day's head start before chasing them with his hunting hounds. Theon was taken back to the Dreadfort's dungeon, while Kyra was killed by Ramsay and his hounds. Theon is mentally and physically broken by Ramsay and lives in great fear of him.[4] He disgusts the Frey cousins, as well as Arnolf Karstark and Hother Umber during a feast at the Dreadfort.[4]
Theon prays before the weirwood in Winterfell's godswood. Art by Cecilia Latella © With Ramsay's father, Lord Roose Bolton, returning to the north, Ramsay has Theon washed and properly clothed. Pretending to still be a prince, Theon is sent to deliver peace terms to the ironborn occupying Moat Cailin. Theon gives the gift of mercy to the dying Ralf Kenning, and relays Ramsay's promise of food and safe passage to the survivors. When they do surrender, Ramsay has them all flayed alive and displays their skinless bodies along the causeway to the ruined castle. As a reward, a rag-clad Theon is allowed to sleep among Ramsay's dogs. He is present when Ramsay is introduced to his bride, "Arya Stark", whom he instantly recognizes as Jeyne Poole.[20] With the siege of Moat Cailin resolved, Ramsay sends a letter and a scrap of Theon's skin to his sister Asha at Deepwood Motte, and to Dagmer at Torrhen's Square, warning them to abandon the north.[47]
Roose angers Ramsay by taking Theon from him in Barrowton and introducing him to Lady Barbrey Dustin at Barrow Hall.[5] Theon insists he is actually Reek, believing that "Theon" was some other man.[20][5] Roose's host and other northern bannermen gather at the partially-rebuilt Winterfell.[24]
Because Theon was a ward of Winterfell for ten years and is the closest thing to kin "Arya" has, he gives the bride away at the wedding in the godswood of Winterfell. Jeyne pleads with Theon several times before the wedding to help rescue her, but Theon refuses. During the wedding banquet held in the Great Hall, Theon sits with Barbrey and is reviled by those in attendance.[24] Fearing that Roose will return him to Ramsay, Theon hopes that Stannis Baratheon will arrive to kill them all, putting him out of his misery.[24] During the bedding, Ramsay has Theon strip his bride for him and makes Theon watch as he humiliates and degrades Jeyne, then forces Theon to prepare Jeyne sexually before he rapes her.[24]
Lady Dustin has Theon show her the crypt of Winterfell, where he admits he wanted to be a Stark.[21] Theon prays before the heart tree in Winterfell's godswood.[21] During one visit, he sees hints of Bran Stark's face in the weirwood, hearing it whisper his name and temporarily restoring his sanity.[6] Wandering the castle, Theon is approached by Holly and Rowan, two washerwomen, on behalf of the singer Abel;[6] they are actually disguised free folk spearwives led by Mance Rayder.[48] Rowan delivers Theon to "Abel" in the ruins of the Burned Tower.[7]
"We flew" - Theon and Jeyne Poole escape Winterfell by leaping from the battlements. Art by Juliana Pinho © When several northmen are suspiciously found dead, Theon is thought a suspect, although he wonders if a hooded man he meets is instead to blame. The idea of Theon being the murderer is quickly dismissed by Roose, who claims that Theon is too broken and weak to have carried out murders.[6] The deaths cause tension in the castle between the Freys, Boltons, Manderlys, and other northern houses, finally erupting into a brawl after Little Walder Frey is found murdered.[7]
Responsible for some of the deaths, the spearwives enlist the help of a reluctant Theon to free Jeyne Poole, whom they believe to be Arya Stark, during the confusion.[7] As they are escaping, one of the Bolton men is killed by Frenya and Jeyne screams, which alerts the guards. Theon and Jeyne reach the top of Winterfell's walls, only to realize that the rope has been left with one of the spearwives down below. Under attack by guards shooting arrows, Theon grabs Jeyne and jumps from the battlements.[7]
Theon and Jeyne land in deep snow and are caught by Mors Umber, who sends them to rendezvous with Stannis's army at a crofters' village in the wolfswood a few days ride away.[49] Asha, a captive with Stannis's army after the fight by Deepwood Motte, barely recognizes Theon due to his torture at the hands of Ramsay.[50]
At the Wall, Jon Snow receives a letter from Ramsay, demanding the return of his bride and "his Reek".[51]

Theon reunited with Asha, by mustamirri © Theon is held prisoner by Stannis Baratheon, who plans to execute Theon to placate northern mountain clansmen who want vengeance for the supposed murders of Bran and Rickon Stark. Stannis intends to keep Theon alive for the time being, as he might have useful information about Roose and Ramsay Bolton. Theon, hanging in chains from a wall, is present during the agreement between Stannis and Tycho Nestoris of the Iron Bank of Braavos, as well as the exposure of Arnolf Karstark's planned treachery and the subsequent arrest of Arnolf's family and men.[49]
Theon recalls how he confessed to Asha the truth about Bran and Rickon Stark and the miller's sons, and about the washerwomen who were really spearwives, and how he told Jeyne that she must keep pretending to be Arya Stark. After Asha's attempts to ransom Theon fail, and Stannis says his men want to burn him alive as a sacrifice to R'hllor, Asha urges Stannis to execute Theon as Eddard Stark would have - by beheading him in front of a heart tree. After she says it, the maester's ravens in the room excitedly squawk the words, "the tree", and "Theon". Theon is pleased that the ravens know his name.[49]
When Victarion Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet arrive in Meereen, Ser Barristan Selmy wonders if it has something to do with Theon.[52]
