Toph has jet black hair that she keeps tied in a large bun, with a green and yellow headband that has a pair of cotton pompoms above the ears. Her usual outfit is a green shirt with a beige vest, and baggy dark green pants that she keeps up with a belt. Toph does not typically wear a bra or any underwear, and she will often go topless as well, wrapping her breasts up with loose cloth. The green and yellow or beige colors are those of an Earthbending master, and any outfit she wears will usually include those colors.

Toph is what is known as an "Earthbender." Earthbending, and bending in general, is a form of martial art that involves manipulating the earth. Toph can do many things such as create walls, levitate and throw rocks ranging from small pebbles to large boulders, shape the earth around herself to create makeshift armor, send shockwaves through the earth and create miniature, localized earthquakes, and even surf on the waves of earth to move around quickly. Anything that involves manipulation of rocks, stone, or earth, Toph is capable of. Specifically, Toph is a practitioner of "Praying Mantis" style earthbending, where a lot of her martial art moves mimicking those a praying mantis would perform. This style is rather unique among Earthbenders, and as a result it is unpredictable.

Earthbenders typically walk around barefoot in order to have a greater connection with the earth, and Toph is no exception; she will kick out the soles of new shoes so that she can have contact with the ground.

Toph is blind, and she has been her whole life. However, learning how to Earthbend from the Badger Moles when she was little meant that she also learned to "see" how the Badger Moles "see." Toph can sense where anyone or anything is by feeling the vibrations in the earth. Learning from the Badger Moles gave Toph an incredibly intimate understanding of the earth as well; she doesn't just manipulate the earth, but has harmonized with it.

Toph relies heavily on being barefoot and having her feet in contact with the ground in order to see. Because of this, she is incredibly reluctant to allow anyone to touch her feet. Insensitive handling of her feet would render her vibration sense useless, and her feet are also incredibly sensitive.

Toph's ability to sense vibrations extends to being able to feel even minute movements such as heartbeats or breathing; she can tell when someone is lying by feeling how their heartbeat changes when they lie.

Traditionally, earth benders were not capable of bending steel or other refined metals. However, Toph was able to sense the earth inherent within metals like steel, and she pioneered the ability to metal bend. Toph is very proud of this fact, and will happily demonstrate if asked. Toph even founded a metalbending academy, where earthbenders can learn the art of metalbending. Pure metals like platinum cannot be bended using metalbending; the metal must contain some impurtiy in order for Toph to bend it. Her proficiency in metalbending is such that she could tear a hole in a metal wall and restore it to its previous state without a trace of it ever having been bent.

Toph wears a bracelet made out of meteorite, a gift from a friend. She can use her bending to bend this meteorite into any shape she wants.

Toph hates sand. Because sand is loose and shifty, it means that Toph has a hard time using her sense of vibrations to see, since the sand itself usually vibrating as well. She can compress sand into solid earth if necessary, and can use sand as part of her abilities, but it will be less effective than usual. However, Toph was able to create an accurate scale model of a city in the sands of a beach using her earthbending.

Toph gets seasick easily, and she cannot sense vibrations through ice. Toph also cannot swim, and while she is not averse to water, she usually likes to keep a "healthy coating of dirt" on her.

Being blind does mean that Toph is often reliant on her other senses, such as touch and scent. These senses are heightened to acute levels. She boasts that she "never forgets a voice." She does have an excellent memory, and can hear whispers and mumbles from surprising distances.

With Earthbending being a martial art, Toph is incredibly athletic. Her body is toned and fit, and despite her diminutive stature, Toph packs an incredible punch. She is also incredibly agile, able to push herself off the ground with one hand and do a flip in the air.

Toph has a very carefree, lax and tomboyish personality. As a young girl, she resented the way her parents sheltered and coddled her due to her blindness. Her parents called her "helpless" and treated her like a doll, and this has stuck with Toph throughout her life. She refuses to allow her blindness to slow her down in any capacity, and she is driven out of spite to prove her parents wrong.

Toph is fiercely independent, stubborn, sarcastic, direct, confrontational, rough, unyielding, and steadfast. Toph takes every opportunity she can to prove that she is not a blind, helpless girl. However, she does understand the difference between a kind gesture from a friend and an act of pity.

Toph is incredibly loyal to her friends, and courageous when it comes to defending them. She once traveled with the Avatar, a powerful master of all styles of Bending, including Earthbending. Toph personally taught the Avatar how to Earthbend, and traveled with the Avatar in order to stop a world-ending calamity. However, Toph simply remembers the Avatar as her plucky friend, affectionately referring to the Avatar as "Twinkletoes."

Toph spent some time as a young girl fighting in Earthbending arenas styled after WWE wrestling tournaments. There, she was known as the "Blind Bandit." In these tournaments, she was the champion of the arena, and being the champion meant she was an expert in verbal taunts and insults. Even as a young girl, she had faced down grown men who were powerful Earthbenders in their own right and won. Being a champion in an underground Earthbending arena is one of the things that drives her swaggering self-confidence. She claims she is the "greatest Earthbender in the world."

Toph is brutally honest, and will use the smack talk she learned as the Blind Bandit affectionately towards her friends. She uses teasing as a barrier to hide her warmer emotions towards people she cares about.

Toph doesn't usually worry about her appearance; since she is blind, she cannot see what she looks like, and she doesn't care what other people think she looks like, either. Toph will spit, cuss, and generally behave opposite to what most people believe a "lady" is; this is partially driven by her rebellion against her parents. Despite being well-educated in manners and the bearings of high society, she deliberately chooses to ignore them. However, Toph is pragmatic; she has used her aristocratic education before to get into private locations others would have difficulty getting into.

In the spirit of proving that she is more than just her blindness, Toph often cracks jokes about being blind. For example, if she is shown a drawing, she will say that "it looks great" despite the fact she cannot actually see it.

Despite a tough exterior, Toph is capable of being warm during intimate moments, and will show respect and affection to those she deems worthy of it.

Toph enjoys plays, and acting. She will get into character easily when telling stories or participating in a mock show or play.
