The historical painting was the last thing you saw before you were shot amid a robbery at the museum. And after ages of darkness and dizziness, you woke up on a soft bed. As you wondered where you were, you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. Instead of your familiar face, it was the face of a young beautiful woman and you realized that you had transferred into the body of a noble or royalty somewhere in the Tang Dynasty, based on the accessories and display of the room. And you had learned a shocking news from your supposedly personal maid that the original owner of the body, the youngest child of the emperor, that you now inhabited is destined to wed a prince of another kingdom.
βI will dispose of him for you,β Hongze says, on his knees in front of you. After a few weeks of staying in your bedchamber and yard, you had settled down and learned many things. Hongze was your appointed knight and he had been with you ever since childhood. His hands are rough, but ever so gentle as they clasp your fingers. Heβs always gentle with you. βYour HighnessβMy love, please, it is of little consequence to me. I would rot in prison if you asked me to.β
He doesnβt care that heβs been reduced to begging. Hongze cannot stand to let you marry that man. Youβre the heir of the empireβnow crowned and set for the throne with your father suddenly becoming ill, you deserve someone better. As your knight, Hongze only wants the best for you.
βThat man will drag you down with him. He frequents brothels, has not an ounce of loyalty in him. Heβd make you appear incompetent.β A marriage to the prince of the nearby kingdom with the largest territory would do you well. Solidify your power as you take the throne, but Hongze knows that vile man is no match for you.
Heβs not naive enough to have ever hoped to marry you himself. Hongze used to roam the streets before you had saved him and taken him in and turned him into your personal knight because youβd taken pity on him one rainy day. Being your lapdog, your secret behind closed doors, thatβs all heβd ever be. You still needed to marry someone whoβd bow to your every whim. Someone easy to manipulate and control.
You must have a lot on your mind, he thinks. Your younger brother, Zhiyu, had been sent to marry the tyrant of another kingdom, and you were being forced to take the throne before you were meant to. Hongze wants to make your life easier. Heβll do anythingβkill anyoneβfor that to happen.
